Help: looking for... a true Classic Star Wars Trilogy Restoration?

Hi,

I am totally new to this Fan Edit thing… Today I first heared about it…

Since my early childhood the classic trilogy was more than just a movie to me… It was my CHILDHOOD.

So it was a true punch in the face when the SE was released in 97 and i dont even want to talk about the prequels…

I hope for the Blue Ray release few weeks ago it would contain a restaurated version of the original theatrical versions from ´77, ´80 and´83 but once again George Lucas betrayed us.

Is there any fan restoration of the original trilogy which is as true to the classics as it can get (without CGI and that crap, no changes in content)?

Thank you in advance…

Thank you for the nice welcome...

I already checked out some of the threads, but for a newbie it`s very hard to destinguish which is the best one, especially if there are so many...

Any suggestions?

Dark Jedi's "V3" DVD upscales of the official 2006 bonus DVD are the best "pure" selection; however, if you're looking for picture clarity, you may wish to check out Harmy's "Despecialized Edition" which is in essence a color corrected cut-and-paste job blending the 2004 footage with elements of the original trilogy (and, despite my simplistic description, this is done rather skillfully!) Both projects are equally well respected and regarded, but are entirely different - so it's up to personal taste as to which you would prefer.

I read that the Dark Jedi Versions use alot of picture softening, which is not very true to me... On another page i read that theres an Adyvan version of Empire, which was called on that page a "miracle work", but i just found a version with CGI effects here. Then i read that There was some Editroid 2010 version of a new hope, any thoughts on that one?

I really want a SW restauration which is as true as possible to the originals, like you watched it in the cinema in ´77.

I saw SW in the theater 4 times in the summer of 1977, including once in 70mm.  Right now, the version that comes closest to that experience in my opinion is Harmy's despecialized edition (not the "partly" despecialized edition... that's different).  It's in HD and looks incredible even on a big screen.  You will get differing opinions from different people, due to different conditions in different theaters, and because of differing memories.

I'm not aware of any softening in DJ's version.  Adywan has several versions so it depends on which one you are refering to.  There are also ones sourced directly off of laserdisc like Mothr's.  There are other restorations such as the very nice one by darth editous. If you want one sourced directly off of a print, there's mine, the puggo grande (but it's very rough).

And btw, it's spelled "restoration." :)

Not so much that there's picture softening on DJ's part, but just that he's working from a fairly low-quality source.

He has indeed. Keep in mind that Harmy is also tweaking his A New Hope Despecialized with a 1.2 version. If you feel like downloading them, I'd wait a bit longer for that one.

And redoing Empire from scratch after that.

As for the topic, yes, there are many, I'm assuming D_J's V3 is the closest possible. Harmy's is great to have in HD, and my personal favorite.

Indeed. Shots that were completely CGI were replaced with footage from D_J's V4(?), shots that had CGI elements in them were rotoscoped with recreated or original elements, the only things that remain from the SEs really are recomposites that used the original models and the redone wipes.

As you can see, its impossible to get them all. If you're going to flip out at ANY change, you might be better off with V3.

Thanks doubleofive...

Since i have no BD Player at all (wanted to buy one for the BD release, but thats out off the window now^^) i check the Dark Jedi version...

BTW... Great Forum... You all are doing such a great job here... Not for SW only, but for preserving, what only can be called a major stepstone in movie history for future generations.

Even though the search function doesn`t work i found the Dark_Jedi thread...

But now i`m totally confused, to get it i need some kind of myspleen... What is this? If this is some kind of illegal file sharing site not allowed to be mentioned or discussed openly in this forum, inform me via pm... It would help me alot.

Sheesh.

Thats why i didn`t ask for links or mirrors...

Just didn`t know what myspleen is... Nevertheless i`m not a big fan of Torrent, especially these days and because of the highly illegal nature of these files, it`s by far the riskiest way to "share".

The 'Spleen is secure, you won't find any companies leeching onto that. And even if there were, look up PeerBlock; if you're on Windows, it's your best friend.

DJ seems to have an irrational hatred of file uploading websites so he won't allow his releases to go up there. While I'd prefer them, it's his choice and anybody who did so against his wishes would just be an asshole.

I have some Myspleen invites if you need one.  Just PM me.

Harmy's Empire despecialized is basically an upgraded version of Adywan's Empire reconstructed.  Harmy's are basically the only ones to get if you want higher quality.

Restorations are usually taken from the 2006 GOUT (George's Original Unaltered Trilogy) Bonus disks or from various laserdisc editions that have certain advantages over the GOUT disks.  There are some other sources that are occationally used as well such as Puggo's versions taken from old 16mm prints.

Just remember that none of these are flawless so it will be up to you to determine which imperfections you are more willing to look past.

You might also want to check out Adywan's Star Wars Revisited.  It's technically a fan edit, not a restoration or reconstruction but it's a must see regardless.

No, then i take the Harmy version instead, he at least uploaded his Preservation on Megaupload... I for myself try to stay away from any torrents cause 3 people i know were already busted because of Torrent Use.

Very sad that i can`t see my favoured version just because that formality. I think limiting this piece of craftsmanship to only one source is against the very meaning of preserving the ORIGINAL SW for future generations... I think spreading it to as many sources as possible and therefore to multiply the audience who will see this is the best way to save Star Wars. My worry is that in 10 years from now the majority will not even know the original Star Wars but this plastic Star Wars Version George Lucas is constantly changing to make even more money with.

LOL, irrational, I personally, meaning ME, do not use them but for small files, but if anyone else wants to upload them to filesharing sites be my guest, upload to ALL of them, I do not care, all I ask is what anyone else here that creates things asks, for a little common courtesy, would it hurt to post in the thread, drop an email, send me a PM, or join me in chat and say, hey I am going to share the V3(or whatever) on this fileshare site, is this cool? and then I would say hell yea it is cool, thanks for doing it, what is so hard about that? common courtesy, that is not asking much, just would love a heads up.

Oh I totally agree with you on that common courtesy point. It seems I've misread your intentions in the past, my apologies. I was under the impression that you wouldn't let people put your works up on said services.
