Help Wanted: Upgrading from CD-to-DVD - Which preservation project version is best?

Author

 (Edited)

I’ve got the non-SE Trilogy on CD. I’m glad, but I’m ready to “upgrade” to a higher-qulity DVD version.

Which one is best?

And more importantly, where do I find it? (I searched isohunt & couldn’t find any non-SE versions… the one that was there, was broke)

Thanks!
Troy 😄

i asked this very question yesterday, i'm sure it comes up all the time so i'll try to field this one if i can.

essentially there are quite a few different o-ot projects out there and it's really about finding one that suits the way you think!

each one is created by a fan and so if he/her idea of how it should look and you really need to create a list of things you hold dear to yourself and then choose the project that fits closest to it. i am in the process of doing this now.

i am leaning towards a trilogy set that will include as the commentary audio, i want the welding footage but i don't want the 3/4 second gap that appeared on earlier projects. the set i choose will be in dvd5 format which seems sadly to leave out zions work which will be amazing when it's done, but it will be in dl format. the list of things i want is getting shorter all the time. for instance i really like MeBeJedis work on the few frames with luke's lightsabre being rectified, i think it looks awesome but it's not a neccessity if that set won't include other things i consider more important. the new wave of projects look promising and the cowclops version is something that i think will be quite definitive. others prefer editdroids and dr. gonzo - personally my mind isn't made up yet, i am still reading up on these.

apart from a trilogy that i will agree with i am leaning towards the classic edition of ANH (just 1 disc) that seems excellent, i am hoping this has the doctored crawl though i'm not sure yet (more reading to be done) - there seems to be a boot of ANH that has the doctored crawl and the isolated score as a seperate audio track which sounds great to me but i don't think it's the classic edition which is a shame. i am considering getting hold of these two and MeBeJedis version of ANH (with luke doctored ightsabre) and piecing them together to make an edited version i consider complete. it would be nice to have a triglogy that was as faithful to LD versions as possible and a version of ANH that has been doctored/edited to suit my vision. i just need to find a trilogy set that i consider to be spot on...

hope this has helped you - bascially, you need to do a lot of reading! i would suggest sticking it out until cowclops finishes his new version (an apparent improvement on his first set known as tr47).

Ignore my post count. You answered the question perfectly.

What I want is simple - a transfer of the Widescreen LaserDiscs to DVD. That's all. I don't care about commentary or any of the other extras.

then i'm afraid i can't help you cos i don't know which are widescreen and which aren't - perhaps going for the anamorphic versions like dr.gonzo would be what you're after? i'm afraid i don't understand all the technical points with widescreen, anamorphic and regular 4:3. i really need to get my head out of ass and figure it all out.

glad to be of some help.

Like michaeldcoates said, all the versions are slightly different. I suggest you check out the screenshot thread, the threads dedicated to the particluar version, and maybe the thread with the poll of different versions.

I have multiple versions (Dr. Gonzo, TR47, Isomix, and EditDroid) but havent actually gotten around to the TR47 version, have only watched the holiday special from that set. Of those my favorite so far is the EditDroid but im also looking forward to Zion's set as well as MeBeJedi's. The Isolated Score on the isomix is great and when i watched that set thats how i watched it, the EditDroid also has an isolated score but i havent listened to it yet.

as far as widescreen, I dont think there are any full screen transfers (someone correct me if im wrong). Also, all the transfers are letterboxed except the Dr. Gonzo which is anamorphic (again, someone correct me if im wrong) so if you want anamorphic you would need to go with that set, otherwise any of the sets will give you widescreen.

also check out the torrents thread, that should answer your where to find it question.

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

Based on this description, the best trilogy for you would be the TR47 RowMan Remix (as Rikter has named it). It's basically the TR47 original transfer with PCM audio (awesome sounding!). I took that and added a title screen and "fixed the glitch" in TESB. For what you're asking for, I think this is currently the best one available.

The truth is that anyone who has either the TR47, Dr Gonzo, ISOMIX or EditDroid trilogies has a damn fine transfer and will have no complaints.

Some people prefer the Farsight version above all others.

The complaints only start if people invest a lot of money or time in the Quality Broth, Punk 13 or LOOK versions.

Currently, the Edit Droid version wins. However, it could be improved by being anamorphic like the Dr Gonzo version, by having the ISOMIX isolated score and by having the TR47 main soundtrack!!!!!!!!!

Does that make sense????
