He looks like a juiced up club kid! Everything this guy does ends up in sword play. Everyone thinks that he is just acting, but he really is a member of the Poop Chute Crew in real life.

Works for me. Looks like a zombified serial killer ... perfect for a real-world take on a guy behind "Robbery, double-homicide, a taste for the theatrical."

Reminds me of Peter Criss on the first KISS Album:

I've been questioning that casting move ever since I heard about it.

Too bad. It's pretty gruesome looking.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

ACTUALLY IT IS REAL. IT WAS REVEALED ONLY A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO ON THE VIRAL MARKETING SITE USED TO PROMOTE THE NEXT BATMAN FLICK.

WHETHER IT IS CONCEPTUAL OR NOT, WHO KNOWS, BUT THE PIC IS NEW AND IT IS OFFICIAL.

I'm not too happy. It's probably a bit TOO real... I'd take it a step further into the fantastic. My filmmaking joker-comic-to-film philosophy is: it should be real, but not so real that just anyone can smear make-up on himself and call himself the Joker.

As is shown in the picture.

I STILL think Heath is a stupid choice... the guy who's playing Harvey Dent looks more like the Joker than Heath.

Looks terrible. Although he does kinda look like a nutter. which works for the character. It doesn't matter what angle they are going for with this, They are playing to high audience expectations with a character like the Joker. I really don't think Heath has what it takes.

At this point I trust the people who did Batman Begins to have not made a bad choice in casting the Joker. The Joker is my favorite Batman villain however (so long as its the kind of Joker who laughs a lot and cracks twisted jokes all of time), and I would have never thought of Ledger as a good choice. I'm hoping I'm wrong though. I want this set of films to be good.

Apparently that pic is a make-up test shot and not the final deal.As for ledger I just do not buy him as Joker.I want to see Joker from the "Arkham Asylum" graphic novel or "Killing Joke" and there is no way Ledger can pull that off.Bad choice.

Sounds like the same shit everyone said about Michael Keaton being cast as Batman in the '90's, then turned around and started jerking off all over Tim Burton because he was a "genius."

We live in the age of snap judgements where everyone has an opinion before even seeing something for themselves.

You're a cool guy, BBDV, but do you have a time machine? Do you know Ledger can't pull it off?

No I dont know it I was just offering an opinion.Hey if he can do it I would LOVE to see Joker done right.Nicholson was ok but it was SO hammy that Joker lost his edge that made me love the character in the first place.I really WANT him to be able to pull it off but there is just something that makes me think he might not-sure Brokeback was a brave performance but the other material he has done is pretty lightweight.Sin Eater was just awful and Knight's Tale is pure fluff.I always thought Bale would make a great Batman and he did just a good a job as Keaton-who was always an under-rated actor.Like I say I really want the character to be done right and if Ledger can do it I will be the first to applaud him for it.

^ Gotcha loud and clear.

Just from seeing him in interviews and stuff, I have faith that he can pull something off that is completely different from his previous characters.

Not that he is in the same league, but Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy and The Graduate are two totally different people. My point is that in the hands of a capable director, even someone like Ledger might surprise us all.

Besides, it's all about the makeup and lighting

True enough. You do make some very valid points and I think the Hoffman analogy is very good.Midnight Cowboy and Tootsie anyone?
Now THERE was makeup and lighting.

Very creepy picture. I was hoping for something a little more fantastic, though, a little less raw than a mouth scar from ear-to-ear.

But, having just typed that, it really does bring a reality to the character.

I just hope that they don't forget that Batman is still a comic book character, and that the representation of evil doesn't need to be stomach-churning.

This character looks too self-absorbed.

I'm really not sure what I think about this approach. Obviously, they're going for something totally different than anything that's ever been done with The Joker before, so I really can't say what I think. As I'm writing this, I'm suddenly reminded of Danny DeVito's The Penguin from Batman Returns. That character was waaaay different than any interpretation of the character before, but I still really like it. And it was also taken in a more grotesque, slightly quasi more realistic direction than the comic book character, so if they can pull a similar move with The Joker, I might be interested.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.
