Have you noticed any differences in various screenings of TFA? [SPOILERS!]

Let me start by saying, it’s probably very unlikely that are different versions of TFA being screened (at least right now- but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if there’s a different cut for the China release).

But I just wanted to see if anyone has noticed anything different in various screenings of TFA.

I’ve seen TFA 3 times. The 2nd and 3rd viewings seemed the same to me, but were different from the 1st viewing.

1st viewing: Before sledding down the giant dune, Rey looks down it for a couple seconds, as if deciding what to do, then sleds down.

2nd and 3rd viewings: We cut to Rey already sledding down the dune.

1st viewing: Rey is cleaning the scrap she has scavenged. She looks at the old lady who is also cleaning scrap. Rey looks back at what she’s cleaning, then looks at the old lady a 2nd time (ie, we see the old lady’s face in 2 shots). Then the guy with the metal face says something to Rey.

2nd and 3rd viewings: We see the old lady’s face only once.

1st viewing: During Rey’s vision, I heard what sounded like Luke screaming (either “Noooo!” from ESB in the Vader confrontation, or him screaming in pain as the Emperor tortures him with lightning in ROTJ. Can’t remember which).

2nd and 3rd viewing: When this scene came on, I was specifically listening for Luke again, but could not hear him.

1st viewing: This one is probably the most unlikely, as I’m probably conflating the movie with something I read shortly afterwards, but I really thought someone in the movie mentioned that the location of the Republic capital rotated every few years or something. I can’t imagine where in the movie this would possibly fit though, so I highly doubt it happened.

2nd and 3rd viewings: No mention of this.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Well I suppose this was bound to happen (should this be combined with the grappling hook etc. thread?).

I’ve seen the film four times. Each time it was the same. The first two things you mentioned never happened (in your mind those scenes probably felt longer to you the first time just because you had never seen them before). The third thing is in the film (you can hear Luke’s scream as the Cloud City hallway falls apart… I think). The fourth is definitely not in the film (you’re right you’re conflating it with something you read after, that info comes from the visual dictionary and has been all over the web).

Yeah, “grappling hook” was my immediate reaction too. I’ve seen it four times and haven’t noticed anything, but it’s been the 2D every time and two viewings were at the same theater. I’d honestly be completely surprised if anything other than the shifting aspect ratio for IMAX was different from version to version, though.

The sound mix is different between the IMAX3D and the regular 3D/2D. A LOT of effects are missing or buried deep in the IMAX mix. The opening music also sounded empty, almost synthesised. Saw it first at the midnight showing on the 17th, IMAX3D. Apart from the sound mix, there were no differences in the film itself that i could see in other viewings (D-Box 3d & 2D)

I just noticed how bad this film really was during the second viewing.

Do you consider yourself a happy person?
Do you feel loved?

Your comment had nothing to do with any difference in theatrical versions of TFA. You want to express your dislike of the film, do it in the appropriate threads.

There were minute differences in the digital and 35mm presentations of AOTC though. And one documented difference in theatrical prints of ROTS. So it’s not always a cinematic hallucination. 😉

All I know is Bob Peck turned into a tree in my universe.

The wipe from Obi Wan in Padme’s ship leaving the lava planet to extra crispy Anakin’s arm trying to pull himself away from the lava flow became a cut instead. (Backstroke of The West has the wipe.) It may have been a change to the DVD only. The Blu Ray is inexplicably back to the wipe now.

I’ve seen it twice in 70mm IMAX 2D and once in IMAX 3D. Something seemed slightly different in the first Rey scene but I can’t be sure - I spent most of that trying to not get a headache so not that reliable.

the 70mm screening expanded to 1.44 but the IMAX 3D i saw was in a 1.9 aspect ratio screen so it did expand but not as noticeably.

You can hear Luke yelling “No! No!” from Empire as Rey ends up in the Knights of Ren flashback after the Cloud City hallway crumbles apart.
