Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released) — Page 61

I'm not sure if i'm posting this in the right place, but I think these despecialized editions look incredible and are the best looking releases of the trilogy i've seen. My only minor complaint is the eyebrows on Sebastian Shaw at the end of Jedi, they look a little off, but also the color of Shaw's face is not the way it looked in the theatrical version. I was wondering if it would be possible to clean up the GOUT footage of that scene somehow so that in the Despecialized Edition Shaw's face would be the right color and the eyebrows would look the way they did originally. That scene is literally the only thing i noticed that was wrong with the entire Despecialized Editions, and if it get's fixed then they'll be perfect. Keep up the good work

Harmy had to lift the eyebrows from the GOUT and insert them into the Despecialized scene with Shaw.  All things considered, it was pretty good.  I'm sure he'll be tweeking it for version 2.0 down the road.  Just be patient.  Harmy will take care of everything.  He's a freaking GENIUS.

I agree, these Despecialized Editions are the most impressive fan edits i've seen before. The eyebrows didn't look bad at all, I was just curious about what his plans were for this scene in the future

We have top men working on it.

Top men.

LOL, you guys, you flatter me too much :-)

But yeah, I'll definitely be trying to improve that scene - I actually have a lead on some HD 35mm sources for it.

Oh, BTW, by any chance, does anyone still have the multiupload links for SW v2.5 loaded into JDownloader? It seems multiupload is down but all the separate links to the other servers should still work but they cannot be got from the multiupload links, so if someone had them loaded in JDownloader, they could make a DLC out of them and save me a re-upload, which would have to be to uloz.to.

OK, so concerning those zoomed-in cockpit shots in ESB; most of you have probably seen, that Ady unzoomed those shots for ESB:R using some 35mm sources - I contacted him, asking if I could use those shots he made and he said he didn't mind if I used them but I'd have to wait for ESB:R to be released and since it may still be quite a while before that happens, for v2.0 I decided to go with my original plan and unzoom those shots using the GOUT and 97SE (most of the zoom-ins were done in 2004) and I spent most of today's evening working on it and  you can see how it worked out here:

(Note that the colors aren't final - they are just adjusted, so that the sources fit together but they will most likely be further tweaked when I put them into the movie.)

I just checked the comparison video of your wider shots and i think it looks very good, did you use upscaling alone to achieve these results? or did you merge the blu ray footage with the upscaled gout footage?

Author

Well that's disappointing. The GOUT/SE mix is certainly still serviceable though!

I too was wondering whether this was footage spliced together with the bluray, or simply an upscaled source?

It's put together with the BD of course, I would have thought that pretty obvious but I guess you'd have to compare it to what just the upscales look like on their own. Also, to see the quality, you need to download the video, not watch the streamed version on uloz.to.

Amazing how you managed to get the gout-material to blend so well! Great job!

It helps, that it feels pretty natural with anamorphic cinematography, that the edges are a bit less sharp than the center of the picture.

The third part of the duel looks fantastic Harmy.

Did you use the 1997 version as one of your reference points? The colour seems quite close to that.

I'm not sure what colour the catwalk/bridge is supposed to be, because every source has a slightly different colour, but I noticed some of your shots were more grey and others more blue. My interpretation is that the material on the bridge is more grey (RE: metal material seen in interior of Star Destroyers such as the Bridge). Having said all that, the seen takes place in a facility that is not the interior of a Star Destroyer, so I don't know whether we can say it would definitely be the same type of material or not.

Looks great and seamless. Might even be worth keeping, depending on how the 35mm turn out.

But, for some reason, I thought you had already done this. Maybe that was for different scenes. In the cloud city previews you posted before, the border was certainly expanded from the cropped bluray (I think I even complimented you on how flawless it looked and asked how hard it is to color grade a splice like that). The chair on the right side of the screen, the to of 3P0's head, and the control panel were all back in frame. Right?

Wow, you really matched those sources well.  Not even the tiniest nit to pick.

@towne32: Yeah, a few of those zoomed in shots were already done this way in v1.0 but it wasn't until after the release of v1.0, that 005 noticed many many more shots were actually zoomed in and added them to his gallery and those are the shots I just did but yeah, the video I posted also contains those I'd already done before.

@rockin: I was trying to make the color of the sabers and skintones consistent and the consistence of  background sometimes suffers a bit as a result but it was never that consistent to begin with :-) And yes, the 97SE was taken into account, though my main reference was still the GOUT with boosted colors.

Harmy, have you see any of the stills from the sets of Empire? Obviously they aren't a reference print, but they could give you some direction for some of the colours, maybe.

I think the overall look of the catwalk/bridge duel looks great though, and understand your point about the balance of the colours for the scene and lightsabers.

The thing is that set photos aren't really much good for color timing reference, because it depends greatly on the lighting, post production color timing and what kind of filters were used on the camera.

Man, that's historical revisionism! ;)

I was going to say, I don't think I've found anything at any point, I just catalog them. ;-)

Ha ha, my playful remark wasn't a jab against your work at all. It's sad if that's the way you interpreted it.

Not at all! I was downplaying my contributions all on my own. I certainly didn't notice all the zoomed cockpits, or most of the things you all have helped me find.
