Happy birthday! Good to see things are moving forward :)

OK, just finished it. Looks pretty good, but there were a few things that stood out to me.

At 2 minutes in, just after the intro text, the camera pans down and we see the star destroyer. I think there is a Despecializing effect going on there because the ship seems to be cut in half and each half is wobbly.

Between 0:05:00 and 5:30 - the key light on Han and Princess Leia seems a bit too hot and is blowing out details.

At 13:00 and 13:11, the long shot with the force ghost, there is an obvious special effect matte that is very visible. (perhaps that was always the case?)

And finally, this is a bit controversial, but perhaps you could clarify exactly why you decided to use GOUT upconverts for the speeders and the initial scene of the Empire's fleet at 19:36? I know they were recomposited for the SE, but so was everything in ANH and that didn't stop you from using those recomposited shots there (the opening battle between the star destroyer and the Tantive IV for example).

Well, because the recompositing in those SW scenes didn't change the look of those shots as significantly as it did here (where it did change the look significantly, the shots were also replaced - like most of the fighter explosions in the Yavin battle).

And the shots in ESB are not simple GOUT upconverts either - just go ahead and compare these shots to the GOUT.

this looks awsome I guess that means 2.0 is almost finished

So, last year I released SW v2.0 on my birthday. This year I wanted to release v2.5 on this day but it didn't work out, so I decided to do something else to celebrate my birthday and release a workprint of reel 1 of The Empire Strikes Back v2.0.

Because I had a pre-set release date, I couldn't quite polish it as much as I wanted, so it is very much a work in progress and I already spotted quite a few blunders (including quite a few rendering errors, which are already there in the lossless render from After Effects - if anyone knows what could be causing these kind of bugs and how to avoid them, please help!) - it should nevertheless give you a fair idea of what ESB v2.0 will be like.

I'd of course like you to report any problems you find (at this point, all is game, even color). Please use the time code from the WP when reporting problems :-)

Here's a mirror of the muxed (video with sound) "ESB-v2.0-WP1-R1.mkv" as shared above:*

All the best! ;)

OK, and I apologize if I seemed to belittle your efforts by saying "GOUT upconverts". I see now there's a lot more work going on there.

Maybe Puggo has a way to scan at least a few shots of his 16mm TESB at HD resolution? How about Poita? After all the 16mm version is probably the best source we have for TESB right now (apart from Neg1's 35mm version).

Author

Poita definitely has a way. Puggo does not. His scanner is SD only.

I downloaded it and I'm watching it right now. Overall i like what I see, mostly the colours and the detail.

There were 6 problems I found till now :

- the sound goes very slightly out of sync for a few seconds when Luke speaks to Han (it seems to be 1 or too frames off, it's very minor)

- there are occasional slight shifts to red which "correct" themselves within a second

- there was a weird white error during the Han/princess argument around 6:46 - I don't have a way how to watch it frame by frame - it looks similar like a damaged VHS tape :-) The same thing happens around 16:30 when Luke is in the bacta tanc and around 19:40 and 20:06

- the scene were R2 and C3PO are standing outside and scanning is extremely blue and oversaturated, AFAIK it was never THAT blue before 2004

- the scene were OB1 shows himself to Luke (around 12:59) the space where he will appear has a thick dark blue background which I never noticed in any other version. The same problem appears a few seconds later when OB1's ghost disappears and Han arrives on his tauntaun

- the snowspeeders which are looking for Han and Luke look "animated", they're not very well integrated to the background

Happy (belated) birthday, Harmy!

The reel looks fantastic! Like the DE 2.1 of Star Wars, this has a much more film-like appearance and it just feels more natural than either the GOUT or the Blu-rays (alterations aside). Not the most useful observation, I guess, but your efforts are genuinely appreciated.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

A big thanks to Harmy for the sneak peek, and to A_New_Hope for the mirror.  I’m downloading it now—can’t wait! Happy B-day, Harmy! =D

What can you get a Wookiee for (Life Day) Christmas when he already owns a comb?

Just a quick note. From ~frame 009836 to 010120, the image seems a bit desaturated. 3PO in particular looks muted. In the next shot, (“Why are you taking this apart now? I’m trying to get us outta here…”) they seem back to normal. Hope that helps. =P

I'm assuming re-rendering the crawl and credits is not part of the 2.0 timeline, but is part of the later plan?  They're easily the most noticeable SD elements in 1.0 as far as I'm concerned.

I guess it just looks odd compared to the SW crawl, and I attributed the oddness to SD.  What's the source?  Puggo?  Either way it stands out--the sharply-defined Star Wars logo and the considerably less-defined crawl just don't seem to go together IMO.

It's straight from the BluRay.

I see what you mean about the crawl, it seems like there is some ghosting going on with the text, strange that this is on the official blu-ray.

Well, knowing that this is from the Blu-ray, and pretty sure they wouldn't produce an effect like that if they re-made the crawl in '97, I think either 1) that's just how it was, or 2) it's a black level thing and originally was an invisible effect that got boosted somehow for the SE's, maybe when they added a purple tinge everywhere for no apparent reason.  Or some combination of the two.

Well, since this reddish kind of ghosting is present on every version of the ESB crawl I've ever seen, it seems likely it was always that way and is also why I made no attempt to remove it.

Interesting. Like CatBus, I assumed that it was an upscale from SD, but since it's like that in earlier releases then it should of course stay how it is :)

Thanks for sharing the workprint; it looks great so far!
