Hello Harmy, will ESB v3.0 have the same color reference as v2.0 as this has a very great color correction which is much better than the UHD Blu ray. I think 4K97-V from the TSWT.com forums could also serve as inspiration for color correction, as it also has very good colors and should probably be very close to the theatrical version.

It’s not going to be 1:1 but the general look should be similar to v2.0.

Thanks for the quick reply. Looking forward to it!

Hey, Harmy. I have a couple questions to ask you:

  1. Are you going to make the new Despecialized version of ESB more sharper so none of the film’s quality will be fuzzy?
  2. Are you still living in Czech?
  3. Can you recreate the 70mm version of ESB?

Frankly, I would love this too. But there are some obstacles: 1) AFAIK we don’t have a single source with an exhaustive list of visual changes between the 35mm and 70mm cuts, 2) We have exactly one 70mm source, which is better than zero, but it means we’re sort of stuck with any quality/blending issues that may bring, and 3) Despecialized tends to pair with hairy_hen’s audio, and right now there’s no English audio at all that would sync to a frame-complete version of the 70mm cut, let alone anything that would measure up to hairy_hen’s standards.

Again, I’m all in on this as a wishlist item too. I’d love it. But I suspect if we haven’t seen a Despecialized 1981 cut of Star Wars, which would be a considerably easier undertaking measured by all three points above, then we’re not likely to see the ESB 70mm cut until after that.

If you haven’t noticed, this is a forum, not DMs. It is meant for discussion and others can weigh in with their opinions and ideas if they’d like.

Hey Harmy,
first of all, congratulations on the wedding and all the best for both of you!

I just wanted to add that in addition to the May 70mm premiere print of The Empire Strikes Back, there is also a 70mm print from the June general release. I had the opportunity to watch this one — the quality is really good, with finer detail than 4K80, and detail and grain similar to 4K83.

Hence my question: Could the 70mm print possibly also serve as an additional source for shots that are not quite optimal in 4K80? Sure, 70mm is cropped compared to 35mm, but perhaps the cropped areas could be supplemented with 4K80 material where necessary? Just an idea.

Sure, that could work. The cropping difference is not that huge I think - it probably wouldn’t be much more of a difference than the Technicolor prints vs. Eastman of Star Wars.

After many years as the lost 70mm print is lost, it’s finally found! Isn’t that right, Harmy.
