ESB v2.5 will be about 90% identical to v2.0 - I just want to fix a few shots and while I’m doing that, I will already do those in v3.0 quality.

Out of interest, which shots in ESB v2.0 are you most keen to update for v2.5?
And congratulations on working on Blade Runner 2049: “Impressive; most impressive”!

May the 4th might be realistic.

Yeah.
But I personally wish we can have TESB v2.5 before the home video release of The Last Jedi.

Wow. You were lucky enough to get an actual estimated time frame. With a date that’s fairly soon. Still an ungrateful sounding response, even if you didn’t mean for it to be.

This place blows my mind sometimes.

I personaly wish Natalie Portman will marry me before the home video release of The Last Jedi.

The ESB 2.0 credits also need serious reworking, those were a reconstruction and have typos. Do we have a clean 35mm source for this?

There are 35mm sources. Whether or not they’be been cleaned sufficiently, yet, I don’t know. Harmy cleaned RoTJ, and I helped clean up the few blemishes that remained.

Laserchwert and I already did 35mm credits for the German v2.0 (German Empire prints kept the English credits). There are some blemishes left in, but I think I will only fix those for v3.0.

Thanks. Let me know early if you want to go with soft-subs for 3.0. I want to start conversations with our German/French/Italian preservation teams to see which way they want to go regarding “theatrical appearance” subtitles in those languages. I suspect most will not want them as a default option.

I’m considering it. Although after the backlash, I’ll have to think about it some more 😃

What backlash? I was all for it.

Everyone else. 😛

(I was indifferent/open minded to it, though)

Coming from a non-English speaking country I’m all in for the soft subs. My dad watched Star Wars in Italy in 1977 and later at some point in the 1980’s in Brazil, with my mom, and according to him there were no hard subs. He could be wrong though. When I was watching v2.7 with him last year the subtitles bothered him a little bit, since he doesn’t speak English and it’s basically more text on the screen, nothing more than useless visual information, almost som sort of pollution.

If you want the more Blu-Ray-y approach, I’d say go for the soft subs. But if the goal is still to be as true as you possibly can to the (American) theatrical version, then hard subs it is.

I was thinking that it could be dependant on final release format. Maybe an NJVC-style full BD50 as the “primary” release with soft subs, and a movie-only MKV with hard subs for those of us that’ll be watching on media players that don’t like forced soft subs?

Certainly something to consider - it sucks that we can’t get seamless branching to work properly - I’d love to have one disc where you’d go to the menu and select between the US 1977 Version, US 1981 version or one of the foreign language versions, each with their own crawl, burned in subs and (for some) credits. I’m not sure if we have scans of both but it would be awesome to have both versions of the English credits as well, where one would run with the '77 version and the other with the '81 version.

And then the MKV release would be the US '77 version.

I mean, we can get seamless branching working. Williarob taught me how to do it, and I did have a 2.6 release that worked just fine. His SSE release also works well for most people. We can figure it out.

It’s just that there are going to be a few people with certain hardware or software that end up struggling with it. The main problem with the SSE turned out to be that people could not get it ripped properly to MKV. There were probably a dozen attempts uploaded onto myspleen by various people, for the first couple of months. So there needs to be an official MKV release that settles on a specific branch layout. Afaik, branching MKVs seem to always stutter at branch points, so are not ideal (and again, surely compatibility issues galore).

There’s plenty of time before final release formats are an issue anyway. 😃

You’re making it sound like I won’t be watching RoTJ 3.0 on a UHD-R in time for the Last Jedi home video release on my dad’s birthday.

The Italian prints we’ve seen do have hard subs (in Italian, for both Star Wars and Jedi). They’d have to, because the Italian dub doesn’t translate those lines. I can’t say there weren’t subtitle-free prints anywhere, but there are a lot of prints out there, and all of them we’ve seen have hard subs in either English or another language.

Yes, I was talking about not having hard subs in English.

Ah. I see the argument for multiple languages. Especially considering the Bluray has multiple audio channels. I still would rather have burned-in subs for at least the MKV, though.

Oh yeah, definitely that. But for other languages, there’s a very good case to be made that we should use burnt-in subs in those languages for those language options, to faithfully reproduce the prints of the time (as with the translated crawl and credits). i.e. why should English be the only language with a theatrically accurate version? Which is how it all gets pretty convoluted, pretty fast.

EDIT: I’m absolutely not saying we should do this, just that we should take this into consideration. After all, we’re going to extraordinary lengths to make the definitive theatrical preservation. Why not go big?

Hey Harmy, any chance you would (could) restore the very first / opening day or whatever we call it version of Star Wars in 720p? The one which has the differently composited 3 optical shots and closing credits? If it’s actually possible, since the only source is probably the laserdiscs
