Thanks a lot for the PM. I just checked Jedi, which I had never seen in HD. Wonderful job, the sabers look a lot better, the classic shot where the sabers are crossed in front of the Emperor's face looks great. It's one the things that has bother me the most ever since the DVD came out.

The only thing that's a bit jarring is the cut from the Bantha herd to the Sail Barge, but I'm guessing there was no one around that and it's a very small thing.

Thanks a lot.

Yeah, the only way around the bantha heard thing would have been to either use the GOUT footage for that shot or to slow it down, both of which would be even worse IMO. But as it's usually the only complaint that people have, I've been trying to figure out a way to improve it, so in v2.0 it should be fixed. But that is a long way off as I think I'll be waiting for the Blu-Rays for that.

And one more question: I'm not saying I don't believe you but how for the love of God did you determine the delay to be 175 ms? That's seems just impossible to me.

That's what I came up with by adjusting the desync compensation in VLC until it felt right. It's probably not perfect. Anyway, I've been a bit busy but I'll probably be able to look at the 2.0 mix and hairy hen's mix in the next couple days.

Just saw your little experiment Harmy. I'm impressed to say the least, especially since you think it still needs some work. Perhaps we can get rid of ALL of the badly DVNR-ed shots with your process, which is what Black Magic would have accomplished if it was carried out on all shots.

Look again, it's just an SE-GOUT composite and it's sadly quite obvious, I couldn't get the colours to quite match.

LeeThorogood said:

This is just a theory / rambling out aloud, but you might get a better result if you only composite the luma channels from the GOUT/04SE and then merge this luma composite with the chroma channels from the GOUT.

Ideally what you need is a filter that can detect the DVNR smear, so that it will only do compositing where needed that way you're keeping the amount of the 04SE used to a minimum.

Well, I wasn't making myself quite clear, I'm using After Effects to rotoscope out the Ronto and it's actually more of a luma thing, I couldn't fit the brightness and contrast rather then colours per se. You can see, that somehow at some point, the left edge of the rotoscoped area is too dark and the right edge is too bright, so then, when you adjust the brightness and contrast, so that one edge becomes less obvious, you make the other edge become more so.

And here's a little experiment of mine:

It still needs some work but it was just an idea.

Fantastic, Harmy will you be redoing your despecialised editions with new shots/less s.e.?

In time, yeah, but I will probably be waiting for the Blu-Rays or at the very least Dark Jedi's GOUT v3. But I decided to do the next version in 720p only, I honestly don't think there's much difference and hopefully the SD shots would fit better with the HD footage.

Harmy,

The new clip is promising as a test, but I don't know if it would work in the movie - without being distracting. I know you said it was quick and dirty, but one thing that really stands out is the floating grey blob in the sky where the ship used to be.

For this scene, I think it would preferable to go with the GOUT for the entirety, unless you were able to somehow spilt the shot into 2 and avoid the ronto altogether.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeah, I'm working on ways to improve it and that ship blob is already virtually invisible in the latest version. One way I'm testing is to give the SE footage less opacity and blend it more with the GOUT footage, which would then yield a quality that would be closer to the GOUT but with less smearing and more detail.

I've been digging through this site since the blu-ray sets got the spotlight at CES, and hearing that once again the OOT would be getting the shaft.

Could you PM me the links?  This is just what I was looking for!

Here's the latest version of the Mos Eisley video. It still needs some work but it should potentially blend better with HD footage. Bear in mind that it's a 5 seconds long shot, so it passes really quickly within a movie, so it shouldn't be as bad in an edit.

Those are looking much better (though it's hard to tell sometimes on youtube). With a little rotoscoping, they might turn out really great.

It's looking pretty good I'd say.

Thanks.

Btw. Erik, what do you mean "With a little rotoscoping, they might turn out really great."? Rotoscoping is the way I did it.

That was a poor choice of words on my part. What I really meant was more like "manual cleanup". There were few parts from the GOUT that looked globbey and splotchy, from where you erased the ronto in the driveby. But looks like you might have taken care of it in the latest clip.

That is really something!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Thanks guys. I can tell you, after the flyby, I thought rotoscoping the ronto (rontoscoping?) out of that last shot would be a piece of cake but it was a bitch... I don't know how Ady did all the rontoscoping in ANH:R, it looks amazing.

Yeah, I'll also keep the project files for these comps and once V3 is out, I'm gonna dump the V3 footage in instead of the GOUT and it should hopefully yield even better result.
