Interesting...yeah, now that I think about it of course you're right, re: the BD's coming from the same master as the 04 DVD's. Just didn't know they actually showed them on HDTV (not that I'm interested in them anyway...'04 is only slightly less offensive than '11).

I knew that the Theatrical LOTR had aired in genuine HD, and I actually did find the EE of all three films from an HDTV broadcast, but as you pointed out the EE scenes were upscales. I wonder who did this?

I know this is off topic but i'm confused. Are you saying that the hdtv transfer of the LOTR trilogy is better than the blu rays?

Well, it definitely has far better colors than the EE BD and it has far less DVNR than the theatrical BD. This goes mainly for FOTR though - the other two movies are I believe the same transfers for HDTV, OT BD and EE BD (although the OT BDs of TTT and ROTK also suffer from DVNR and EE of TTT has a green tint but to a lesser extent than FOTR).

On the other hand, all the HDTV captures of LOTR I've seen suffered from pretty bad compression artifacts - there simply isn't a really good HD version of LOTR out there.

What about kk650's versions? I've yet to watch it, but supposedly it looks very good.

I downloaded it and while it is an improvement over the official BD, it still looks nothing like the original colors seen on DVD, HDTV and OT BD.

Will there ever be a Despecialized Edition of Phantom Meance and Attack of the Clones because the theatrical cuts for those are only on VHS and (Episode 1) laserdisc (japan) and Revenge of the Sith has the theatrical cut on bluray.

This may be partly redundant, as Adywan has already made a theatrical cut of The Phantom Menace. As for Attack of the Clones, I'm not aware if anyone has done that yet.

Ok wasn't the theatrical cut of Episode 2 released only on full screen vhs? Unless the widescreen portions of the Bluray and DVD mixed with a film reel could make it.

As far as I know, the only available versions of the actual theatrical release of AOTC are some bootlegs shot on video camera in theaters - all home video releases have been altered, including the VHS. But to be honest, I don't give a rat's ass about Episode II. I do have a certain nostalgia for TPM but it's not exactly high on my list of priorities either.

Seems the colour changes on AOTC are occasionally quite striking. Notice in the first screenshot comparison on the page Harmy linked to how the alien girl in the bottom left corner's skin changes from blue to green. I'd guess that the DVD is more theatrically accurate and that the actual make-up used was blue.

But how was the VHS changed? And why is that the only one with a hard to find theatrical cut? For OT there r plenty of VHS tapes and laserdiscs out there. Plus the Despsecialized Edition. For PM, there is the VHS and japan laserdisc. For ROTS, there is the bluray.

The VHS was changed in the same way as the DVD, I though that would have been obvious - the VHS and DVD of AOTC did come out at the same time after all.

Episode 1's theatrical cut is on VHS. I think the DVD might have extended the pod race.

I believe Harmy has said that the only way to obtain the theatrical cut of ATOC would be to get a bootleg recording of the film in the actual theatre.
