A user on reddit named u/puffpants has uploaded the Despecialized Editions on to mega.nz and I was wondering how safe these are to download. Also, will the quality hold up? I want to get my hands on the Despecialized Editions because they sound like everything I’ve ever wanted, but the whole process of acquiring them seems daunting to me. These are the links to his downloads.

Many, many people - with various levels of technical or computing knowledge (many with none) have managed to acquire the Despecialized Edits by following ‘The Ultimate Introductory Guide’ - linked in the 1st post of the 1st page of the this thread.

It may look complex - but take one step at a time, keep calm, try to be patient, and am sure you’ll be able to acquire them.

If you have any issues look around YouTube and Google etc for some useful info and helpful guides - as well as on here - where you’ll find numerous questions have already been answered, and are continuing to be answered.

Good luck with it - and welcome to the site - please take the time to have a good look around.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

FWIW, I’ve always treated DeEd as “what a respectful Blu-ray transfer would have looked like”, and the various film transfers as “what it actually looked like in theatres” – although obviously a just-struck print would look much cleaner than the prints we’ve been able to find and use. For whatever reason, I still prefer DeEd in the end.

Yeah, I’m not really keen on having a DE that features tons of gate weave, even if the original, release-day theatrical prints had it.

I’m downloading the correct file I think.
On Uloz I searched “harmy despiacialized edition” instead " HARMY DEED IV MANUAL "

There was a file so I’ve download it and I was sure that was the movie, I don’t know what it is, but the password harmy don’t works.

This is the guide you want. It’s in the first post and it doesn’t have the steps you’re describing. Take another look.

Depending on whether you do a manual download or multi-part download the steps are a little different.

If you want to do a manual download, the first step is here.

For that method, you still may have to download 2 parts. Might that be your problem, that you don’t have all the parts?

That said, I would not personally recommend that method, though.

I would recommend a multi-part download since it divides a really huge file into smaller pieces. The first step to that is here

But either way, the steps are in the guide, and you are having trouble because you aren’t following it. There’s nothing in there about a PPT file.

I’ve explained in my previous post I dind’t searched "HARMY DEED IV MANUAL "
Now the file is in download, it’s a big file so I think is right.

I think is pretty curios that if you search in that website "despecialized"
all the movies magically appears, but you have to subscribe and pay…

and somebody accused me to avertise for the guy that sell blu rays ah ha…

Remember, there are two parts to the 2.7 MKV Manual Download if that’s the way you choose to go. You have to have both parts before anything will extract.

Yeah I know that might seem a little strange. What you’re seeing when you do that are files that other people have altered on their own, but they are not the versions that Harmy published.

When the instructions say search “HARMY DEED IV MANUAL” searching something else (like “despecialized”) won’t get the same results.

Stick to what’s written to avoid this problem.

but you have to subscribe and pay…

No, you only have to pay for the faster download speed. Click the smaller download link under the bigger download button for the slower free speed.

That may be people are unhappy with the demanding tone of your posts thus far. Try being a little more polite. We are happy to help when people show respect and make an effort follow our instructions.

Best of luck to you!

After watching some videos of Nathan P. Butler’s From the Star Wars Home Video Library (great show, by the way).
I noticed that the Star Wars: Special Editions get new incarnations every seven years (1997, 2004, 2011), and they always have new formats.

  • 1997 theatrically, on VHS and LaserDisc
  • 2004 on DVD
  • 2011 on Blu-ray
  • 2018 on 4K Ultra HD?

If Disney didn’t buy Lucasfilm, George Lucas will probably continue the seven-year cycle and tweak the first six films again and they will have 4K releases.
And maybe this is a sign that this is the year that the first six Star Wars films will come out in 4K Ultra HD, and I’m not sure if there will be more alterations under the new rule of Disney. (Most likely not, since the 2011 versions are canon according to Disney).
However, what is sure is that The Last Jedi will be the one to come out in 4K this year.
It is not yet confirmed if The Force Awakens or Rogue One will get 4K re-releases this year.
And now, it’s very possible considering Fox bought Disney, meaning that Star Wars is now under Disney, and the saga is now 100% Disney.

The only reason why we don’t have the unaltered versions of the Original Trilogy from Disney yet is because Kathleen Kennedy is close friends with George Lucas, who specifically told her to never re-release the unaltered versions.
Which Kathleen did out of respect for George, not just as the original creator of Star Wars, but also as a close friend.
She wouldn’t want to betray Lucas the same way Anakin betrayed Obi-Wan.
But Disney may, without any regards for the friendship of the two, force Kathleen Kennedy to put out the original unaltered trilogy since it will surely print money for Disney.
And with the cycle going on, now might be the year to do it.

If the 4K discs do come out this year, I hope the 4K discs get ripped so we can make an even better source for v3.0.
And I hope that Disney will force Lucasfilm to re-release the original unaltered trilogy this time.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

You’re so right.

??? I don’t think anyone’s forcing anybody to do anything. As far as we know, most people simply don’t care.

Also wrong thread.

Please forgive me if the answer is staring at me in the face, but I am wondering what is new in “Star Wars DEED mkv v2.5.1”. I just stumbled across some new checksums in HanDuet’s supplementary guide, which relate to the aforementioned v2.5.1. As far as I can tell, there is no mention of this addition in the changelog of either the main guide or the supplementary guide, nor is v2.5.1 referred to in either the original post or last dozen pages of this thread.

If someone could post the contents of the included readme.txt file in this release (minus any download links which might be present, of course), I’d be grateful.

And a belated Happy New Year to everyone here!

I’d say it’s a fairly safe bet that there will be a 4K release of the Special Editions sometime this year.

As for the notion that we might finally get an official uncorrupted release, I would paraphrase Éomer’s line from an entirely different nerdy movie:

Look for the OOT, but do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these fans.

Bluto, I’ve never heard of any Star Wars DEED MKV v2.5.1. Are you sure that’s not just a version from the wild? Where did you hear about it?

I heard about it from HanDuet.

The supplementary guide can be found by following the link in section 6 (file verification) of the ultimate introductory guide. There is a readme file included with the release according to this, and I would be interested to see what it says without having to download the entire MKV too.

I’ll send you a temporary link to the Readme file via PM, but it’s from SW 2.5.

Are you referring to this picture from TUIG?:

I’m not sure why those files have a “.1” on the end of the version numbers, but they’re still the 2.5 version.

Other than that, I see no reference at all in any of HanDuets three guides to a 2.5.1.

1/8 Edit: I spotted it later but still didn’t know what it was. Glad HanDuet clarified below.

Hi Solkap,

Many thanks for your PM. No, I wasn’t referring the picture above, but rather to the supplementary guide (with checksums) for which you provided a link in the ROTJ thread:

Since you understand how to do checksum verifications, perhaps this page will help you isolate if there are particular files that are causing the problem:

Star Wars DEED v2.5.1 appears in this guide (but only for the MKV) as well as 2.5.

JEDIT: Info kindly provided by HanDuet:

Version v2.5.1 replaces the buggy Spanish Latin Dub with a fixed version and adds Russian dub.
Subtitles from a newer version of Project Threepio (v9.0) are also included.

I downloaded all three despecialized editions, and just finished watching Star Wars with my sons. It was amazing. I didn’t own any of the original trilogy films on DVD or Blu-Ray so I had to go to Wal-Mart and by the Blu-Ray collection for all three. I’ll probably never even watch those. Before I got the despecialized editions, I was making do with my old VHS copies! My VHS copy of Star Wars wore out, and I bought a used VHS for $1 to replace it last year. So glad to not have make do with those anymore!!

All I have are receipts showing that I bought a copy and sold it.
Those two receipts are my entire Star Wars collection.

But isn’t it actually current ownership of the source material that makes it ok to have the DE’S? IE, you probably shouldn’t have sold it as long as you intend to keep the Harmy’s versions?

Yeah. Basically this means that someone else got their copy from him instead of buying it from the store.

I guess we could all just buy and sell each other the same copy endlessly here with that method.

IMHO, with physical media, the rights to a particular copy are purchased and only maintained by virtue of physical possession. If you sell or give that copy away, you relinquish the rights to it, as well as any rights to edited versions.

My understanding is that that is one of the big reasons the powers that be tolerate the Despecialized Project or fanedits in general. In theory, more people than not will adhere to the honor code, and the copyright holders don’t lose that much money.

But in the scenario ray_afraid describes, both he and whomever he passed his blu-rays off to now both have access to copyrighted material, while only one copy was purchased, and the studios lose revenue.

Same problem with course of action towne32 describes. I hope I’m not coming off as preachy or judgemental here. I only mean to share my conscience.

Let’s say I have the SE DVDs, but not the Blu-Ray. Am I still eligible to watch Harmy’s DE? It’s an official release, but not the source.
