OK, I'm entering the editing and colour correcting stage, while waiting for some clips from the battle of Yavin from Dark_Jedi's project blu. Here is a clip of a quick assembly of the 1st 5 minutes, it isn't final but should be quite close.

 Amazing work Harmy.

I'm sure you've thought of it already since the colour correcting hasn't been done yet, but don't forget to give those laser blasts back their vibrancy!  ;)  I can't believe LFL actually thought it would be acceptable to let it look that way--did they even bother to check against another source?

The blockade runner is supposed to be maroon, not bright red, isn't it?  Also, I'm pretty sure the flash frames for blaster impacts in the corridor fight ought not to be magenta.  lol

Anyway, I really look forward to seeing how this turns out, because the beginning is perfectly assembled as far as I can see, a seamless blend of original crawl with high resolution footage for the flyby.  Well done!

Here's a new little experiment. Right now it's just a concept but with some more tweaking I think it could work very well (compare it with the crawl in the previously posted video, which was just Dark_Jedi's scripted upscale of the GOUT).

EDIT: Here's an improved version including a side by side comparison.

Harmy, what did you do the crawl?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Looks like the scripted GOUT text over the high-res background from the SE.

The only real drawback is that the stars in the original are significantly brighter, but that could probably be solved easily.  Very nice work.

Actually, it's more than that, here's a comparrison screenshot, top is the GOUT upscale from Dark_Jedi's latest sample a bottom is my version. Click to see in full resolution:

I'd love to see how handle the original matte paintings of the rebel soldiers in the great hall and the y-wing in the foreground right before luke climbs into his x-wing.

"Oh, don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch."

I pretty much decided to leave that one.

And no comments on the crawl? Really? :-(

Oh sorry Harmy, I think the crawl looks awesome.

Which one did you decide to leave though?

Hey Harmy!

The crawl looks awesome!! Especially the sky/the stars in the background!!

Pleeeeaaase, keep it like that in your final version.

I can't tell you, how much I'm looking forward to see it!

Thank you, thank you!

By the way - on May the 4th the details of the Blu-Ray-Release will be revealed:

Oh, sorry, the one with the y-wing is probably gonna stay, I think.

I'm finishing the crawl right now, so hopefully it will work well and I'll be able to use it :-)

Did you recreate the text in high resolution?  Because it sure looks like the letters retain better clarity as they recede . . .

The angle looks a bit different when compared side by side.

Regardless, it looks really good.

For the new crawl, it looks like you took each line as it first appeared in the GOUT upscale, and then shrunk it as it receded, to retain the high resolution.

Very nice.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

That's almost exactly what I did. But I actually took each line as it first appeared, luma-keyed it out from the background, hand erased the remaining stars, straightened it up in photoshop, made the whole original crawl text in 2D and then used it as a 3D layer in AE and copied the movement of the original crawl.

I'm now going to render the hopefully final version with slight sharpening of the first few lines at the bottom and a depth of field lens blur mask, so that it doesn't stay perfectly sharp the whole time, which looks un-natural. The rendering is going to take hours, so I'm gonna do it overnight.

Is there any chance you'd be able to rotoscope or matte it in, or just use the G-Force GOUT?

That's cool.

The first five and the crawl are just killer. Each clip is better than the next. I just can't wait for this thing to be finished.

I like the fact that the crawl recedes at a wider angle in the side-by-side comparison shot, and the clarity is wonderful.

Wow, any chance of your releasing this Photoshop file of the straightened crawl? That might be useful for other people!

@ 005: Sure, I'm still tweaking it but I'll upload it later, when it's all finished. No problem :-)

I will be brigtening up the starfield and btw. in the 2004 SE it IS the same starfield behind the crawl as in the original non-ep.IV version. And the stars seem so much bigger and brighter because it is more cropped and therefore everything appears larger.

Harmy, everything is looking great.  did you say you are going to leave in the SE rebel soldiers in the last scene, or use the matte painting?  I'm not clear on that one.

Also, what are you doing about the lightsabers this time?  The ESB sabers look great, whatever you did.
