That was only because I ate too many jelly beans.
Hello new user titl... hrm, maybe not.
ignore this post, sorry. I was replying to stinky and frink.
Don't listen to Frink, I've won jelly beans plenty of times.
Don't ignore this post.

I've been working on a color matching/transfer algorithm. I ran some tests using a scan of a frame of a print, that seems to have retained it's color, and I was surprised how different the colors look compared to Harmy's great work:
Reference frame:

After adjusting the brightness slightly, this was the result of the color predictions for two other frames:
Not too surprising, Harmy's is (more or less) matched to a Technicolor reference print, which would likely not exactly match the colors on another 35mm medium, even on opening day. Even less so for something this old, even if it is relatively well preserved. Technicolors may have been dimmer and greenish from the start, but a slightly pink-shifted and faded print would also look brighter and less green. I'm inclined to say it's the latter--home video has really colored our memories of how this film looks.
Actually the color prediction for the second frame is surprisingly close to a similar frame of Star Wars Legacy Edtion, that Mike Verta posted on his website.

I must admit, I really like these more saturated colors. They look really film like.
Howdy folks. 1st, the legal stuff: I am an owner of two SW trilogy box sets, the VHS set and the recent high def release (crap!). The thrill I went through when I discovered Harmy's Despecialized edition was palpable!
I've successfully downloaded the v2.5 mkv file, and can watch it in its entirety on my computer with VLC Media Player. What a pleasure to watch.
I'm trying to burn a bluray disc (TDK BD-RE DL 50GB) using AVCHDCoder. However, a few minutes into the process it fails, giving me an unknown error.
Any idea what might be going wrong??
Thanks for any help.
Just use tsMuxer to create your Blu-ray folder structure, and burn that to disc using ImgBurn. Haven't messed with other software, but there's always a risk something may try to re-encode the video, and that would open the door to all sorts of problems.
Also, it will fit safely on a BD25.
Edit: in fact, if your software is telling you DL is required, it is indeed re-encoding probably.

If you have the MKV file, follow these directions posted for someone else yesterday. It's almost certainly failing for you right now because that program you're using (I'm not familiar with it at all) is doing something funky during the process.

We should start. Everyone upload a picture of your official discs next to your fan edits next to your local newspaper with today's date!
Local what-paper?
Oh, God. I literally have no idea what I'm doing. I'm looking for this v2.5 DVD5 file thing on Google, but I can't really find what I've been told I need if I want to burn them so they work on a DVD player. Are these movies in one download or do I need to find three of them? And where is there a safe place to get ImgBurn? The links from the official website have all given me warnings from McAfee. And honestly, I have no idea what a torrent is. Also, I'm looking for which discs I need to get from Amazon if I want to do this. Will 4.7gb be enough?? I'm sorry! But I'm so confused here.
PM sent.
As for the non-torrent related questions, you can download imgburn here: http://www.videohelp.com/software/ImgBurn
The above site has a link that says AdFree, so just use that. I believe the other links are valid too, but one needs to be careful to uncheck the other stuff it tries to get you to install.
4.7 gb discs are what you want.
Also, you're right. The DVD5 versions are *not* easy to find on public trackers it seems. I could've sworn I saw them once, but I wouldn't be surprised if they died off.
Thanks Stinky- that helped.
Imgburn was able to to burn the files, but I got thousands of failures during the verification step. I clicked <Continue> long enough that it just kept going, logging each error as it went. It got held up at 90%, as every sector was having a problem at that point, and so I just cancelled the whole thing and ejected the disk. Funny thing, it played just fine on my PS3, which was fanastic!
Now....ESB and ROTJ....here I come
thanks again

Did you make sure the entire thing played? Seems like there could be an issue.
I'm usually too impatient to do the verification as I've never had one fail, though the writing process itself fails from time to time.

Didn't watch beginning to end non stop, but fast forwarded/skipped ahead several times. Watched the beginning 10 minutes and last 10 minutes. No problems. Looking forward to a non-stop, uninterrupted viewing!

Assuming you DL'd the complete and total file without interruption then it has to either be the disc media you're using or your drive. I would 1: Ensure your drive is running its newest firmware. 2: Try burning another fresh disc and see if it returns failed sectors, if it does then - 3: Try burning on a much lower speed. If all else fails you could disassemble the drive and clean its lens, but that can be a pain in the ass. Even though it returned an apparent shit load of errors, that might amount to only a handful of stutters here and there throughout the entire film - if it plays and those minor hiccups don't bother you then all's well that ends well.
My drive used to sometimes have trouble when burning BD's (occasionally fail while initially burning, or would return verification errors and I would notice hiccups while watching), until I switched to using Falcon Pro's - and I haven't had a single coaster or error since (but those are expensive - about 4 bucks per blank. Your TDK's, although I've never used 'em, run about the same but you pay a lot more for that additional layer on blank BDs.) For me it was the disc media I was using, it's likely the same problem on your end.

The color correction in 2.5 is honestly my only minor issue with this version. And it's only in certain scenes. Luke and Han's skin tones tend to look very orange, particularly when they're on the Death Star. It's kind of distracting, to the point where my wife mentioned it (and she notices very little in terms of picture quality and color timing).
I'm not complaining, still could not be more grateful to Harmy and all involved in this project. I did think it was worth mentioning, though, and wondered if others were distracted by the overt orange skin tones at times.
I think what you're noticing may be described as "an imperfect film made by young filmmakers in the 1970s"?

Though I haven't seen the 1977 35mm, every version I've seen has inconsistent skin tones. GOUT/Harmy/Blu-ray/1997/etc. It's brought out to varying degrees in different versions, though. I think every version has scenes where skin tones look unnatural. Not always the same scenes, depending on the correction. But I think timdeggerm is probably right and it's inherent in the film for whatever reason.
It is, without a doubt, inherent to the original film. I've noticed inconsistent skin tones in every version too. It's just exacerbated by the orange/cyan push of the 2.5 color correction to a pretty distracting degree. I'm assuming the Technicolor reference print had a lot to do with it.

With a "warts and all" restoration, you get warts. Star Wars is the only film where Harmy was working with a pretty dead-on accurate theatrical color reference. With the others (particularly Empire), he's a little freer to even out inconsistent skin tones, because he doesn't have a definitive color reference telling him he shouldn't.
There is also some level of suck that's always going to be left over from any Special Edition source material--to match colors better than what we have now, you'd need original film elements (IMO DrDre's example demonstrates that trying to exactly match the Blu-ray to theatrical colors can end up blowing out detail, so you may want to bump the gamma to compensate, but then you lose color accuracy, and so on). Not that that isn't coming some day, but Harmy may not be the one to do it. It's not "Despecialized" if it wasn't "Special" to begin with.
And I'll gladly take these warts over the SE's any day of the week.
