That shows Lucas has no appreciation for his art.

Or respect for other peoples' art. A most meddlesome executive producer.

He should consider himself lucky that his films spawned a fan base that cares enough about them to help preserve the theatrical versions and show them to future generations.

Indeed.

Too bad, isn't it, Lucas, that the fans of your films prefer your incomplete garbage to your final release, huh?

I wouldn't be surprised if decades down the road, the preservationists make the final win, and while even the 1997 versions, never mind the 2004 and 2011 versions, have completely faded into obscurity, while the original theatrical versions painstakingly restored by longtime fans remain the definitive versions in circulation.

You and me both, and even Disney agrees that Han shot first (or "only" as some would say).  I honestly hope they make a deal with FOX and get the unaltered versions out on Blu-Ray or any HD format in true HD for everyone to own.

I think this is exactly why a quality release of the OOT has been avoided. Let it out even a single time and it will usurp the updated versions. And the two things could've peacefully coexisted in overpriced "DELUXE MULTI-EDITION"s this whole time.

I'd gladly buy the Delux Multi-Edition if just for the UOT as long as it's properly restored and in anamorphic HD.

Just a thought... But...

I'm sure both Fox and Disney would love to sell the original versions of the trilogy since they only care about making money and selling the original trilogy would be a cash cow. However, I'm willing to bet that Lucas foresaw that possibility and he likely included a stipulation that says Disney and/or Fox cannot release the original trilogy without his permission otherwise the rights to the films revert back to him.

He may not be a good filmmaker, but he is a savvy businessman.

Wow. Great thing you brought that up. It's never been discussed before and no one ever had that thought before either.

Assuming there weren't any of these hypothetical legal failsafes against a release of the unaltered trilogy embedded in the Disney deal, wouldn't it behoove Fox to put something out sooner rather than later? It's not like Disney's never going to release another box set, SE or otherwise, and since Fox owns ANH until the end of time, Disney is going to have to make some kind of deal with them to do it. Shouldn't Fox want to get the ball rolling on that while they still have the distribution rights to the other two films (which I believe move to Disney in 2020)? I'm legitimately asking, I don't even really know if this is how distribution rights work, but it does seem to me like it would be better for Fox if this release came while they control all three films rather than one.

Since the digital releases of Empire and Jedi didn't have the Fox fanfare, it's save to assume Disney and Fox already made some kind of deal. Also, there is this thread.

It means that Fox owns the distribution rights for Star Wars forever, if they don't make a new deal. In contrast to the rights for Empire and Jedi, which will (or already did?) return to Lucasfilm.

Actually, not forever... Distribution rights are apart of Copright Law. For works made before 1978 (and owned by a corporation), the copyright lasts for 95 years from the date the work was published. So as of now, Star Wars enters public domain in 2073. Of course, Congress can extend the copyright terms anytime they want (like in 1998), so it could be later than 2073.

None of the fans want to wait until then or later for the unaltered versions of the original trilogy to be made available in HD Blu-Ray or whatever home video format is in the future.  Our friend Harmy made the next best thing, so at least there's that.  If only Lucas wasn't so stubborn and just let the National Film Registry have the film negatives to the threatrical versions for preservation.  If Lucas is retired from Lucasfilms, that means he passed ownership of his company to someone else.  Thus what he should have no say what version of Star Wars is made public.

I believe the rights to empire and jedi already did, since the digital releases have taken the fox logo out of all films aside from SW.

I agree 100%, which is why I've already enjoyed watching the despecialized editions a few times already. I just wanted to point out that although periodicals like Hollywood Reporter and Variety have said that 20th Century owns the distribution rights in perpetuity, that that is not 100% correct. I would re-purchase (probably for the 5th or 6th time) the entire trilogy if Disney/Fox released remastered, but despecialized, versions.

As it stands now, Harmy's excellent product is my new go-to version of the trilogy.

Thanks again Harmy!

For me it would probably be the fourth time i bought the trilogy if such a thing occurred, 1. being the 2004 fullscreen dvds (I was very young at the time, and while i did notice the changes between the rented 1995 fullscreen vhs tapes, I didn't care at the time. All that mattered was that I owned the star wars trilogy. Though for a couple years I thought the 1997 and 2004 SE were the same, with the Jabba shot at the trailer being a prototype or something.) , 2. being the 2006 widescreen dvds (which I got recently), and 3. being the 2011 blu-rays (mainly for the OT deleted scenes)

That's what I was trying to say in the first paragraph of this post.

Thanks again Harmy!

You and me both!  And if I'm in a special edition mood, I'll go to Adywan's revisited version.

That goes double for me, Harmy!

Harmy, will you be making one of these Making-Of-Documentaries for the Despecialized Editions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi?

I wasn't really planning on it but I might cut a few things from Empire and Jedi in for the final versions of these docs.
