Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 509

Why do people even bother downloading the AVCHD version if they don't know how to burn it? The MKV is higher quality and will play on any modern TV from a USB stick... surely people can work out how to do that!

No it won't. Most things expect USB devices to be formatted as FAT32, and it has a 4GB file size limit.

Lower file sizes are a priority for some people, I guess.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Why do people do any number of things without thinking past step 1?

Hi everybody. First of all thanks to everybody involved providing the sources of this project and especially to Harmy to all his effort creating the project itself. The movie looks awesome!

I want to remux the movie with only the audio tracks I need. Which do you consider is the best english audio track? What is the difference between versions from 77, 85 and 93?

5.1 is 5.1 ok, but sounds better than the 2.0 one? Because I'm not a big 5.1 fan and my audio system is 2.0.

What do you think?

Thank you for your help and sorry if my english isn't the best!

1977 5.1 and 1977 stereo are very similar.  If you have only a stereo system, the stereo version will likely sound a bit clearer due to lack of mixdown, otherwise I prefer the 5.1 mix.

1977 mono mix is another favorite here.  It has many interesting differences from the other 1977 mixes, but the audio quality is not as good.

1985 is, in a lot of ways, a merger of the differences in the 1977 mixes.  It sounds okay but there's no dynamic range to speak of.

1993 is a good-sounding mix overall, and like the 1985 mix, merges together elements from the different 1977 mixes.  But it's often criticized for including sound effects that were not original audio, so it's not as authentic.

Hope that helps.

If you only have a stereo system, you should go for one of the stereo mixes.

I love the mono mix myself, but as far as pure audio quality goes, the stereo mixes are superior. But the mono mix has so many unique differences that it's at least worth a listen all the way through once.

Personally, if you want the best overall audio quality, I'd go with the 1977 stereo mix. As CatBus said, the 1985 mix (which is the one I grew up with) has limited dynamic range, though the 1977 stereo mix has a narrower stereo field, so frankly it's kind of a toss-up between 1977 stereo and 1985 stereo. I'd still give the edge to 1977 stereo.

I prefer the mono version myself. I enjoy most of the changes that were also carried into international mixes.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Funny, from what I heard, FAT32's limit is 2 TB.

You're confusing file size and partition size.

FAT32's partition size limit is 2TB. FAT32's individual file size limit is 4GB.

Funny, from what I heard, FAT32's limit is 2 TB.

FAT32's partition size limit is 2TB. FAT32's individual file size limit is 4GB. This is why you can fit a DVD9 worth of data in standard DVD format onto a FAT32 file system, but not an AVCHD. DVD format splits up the .vob files into pieces, but an .m2ts on a bluray/AVCHD is not. Basically, it would only work if the MKV was split into multiple files that are each less than 4GB, since NTFS and exFAT aren't widely compatible formats (outside of computers).

It's amazing to me that someone would complain that people don't use a flash drive from which to watch the MKV when they haven't even tried (and failed) doing it for themselves.

I guess you have a point there. Some TVs (eg Samsung and Philips) will accept NTFS no problem and others won't.

Amazing work Harmy! Much respect to you and the community.

I've recently watched the 10min short "making of" video on YT, taking into account all of the sources used to create the DE.

Very impressive work.. I'm at a loss for words..

*WE'RE NOT WORTHY! WE'RE NOT WORTHY!* ;-)

It looks as though you are planning on a full BD release with additional special features. Is this correct?

Yoda: “No… No! Impossible, that is! True, that is not!”

I don't think you understand.

MySpleen is a private torrent tracker (meaning you must be invited to set up an account and the .torrents it lists are permanently blocked from using any other peer discovery methods outside of the MySpleen tracker itself.)

Suffice it to say, what you should do (after having bought official copies of the Original Trilogy) is:

- get an invite to Myspleen and create an account,

- search MySpleen for "Harmy"

- download the v2.5 AVCHD of Star Wars, the v2.0 AVCHD of ESB, and the v1.0 AVCHD of ROTJ (as those are the lastest respective versions of each)

- buy blank Memorex DVD9's (or DVD-DL's)

- burn each AVCHD to a DVD.

- Enjoy watching them on your Bluray player.

.

.

You will likely not (and hopefully not) find anyone here who will sell copies of the Despecialized Edition to you. For one thing, to profit from this project is illegal. So, either they will give a copy to you entirely for free out of their own expense or else they will help you to do it yourself.

Most likely the latter. Not because we're jerks. But because I would imagine if anyone wanted to give out a copy, they'd want to do it properly and also include DVD or Bluray cases and labels both in the cases and on the discs.

I've always said that the mark of a good fan edit (or preservation/restoration in this case) is that it doesn't look fan made. Giving you a burned disc with Sharpie written on it in a cheap case with a post-it on it would seem to be half-assing it and I don't see the people here doing that for a project as wonderful and as important as this is.

This is incredibly useful. Thank you for this explanation. I was a little confused about this as well and had to do some research. But you summed it up quite nicely! :-)

Hey, Kermit, welcome to the forum!

Harmy is currently working on the full BD release w/ special features, but I don't think it will be released until he finishes Jedi 2.0, if I'm remembering correctly. At any rate, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Greetings Harmy.

First of all, I would like to thank you for the work that you've done on the Despecialized Editions.  You are doing Lucasfilm's job for them by preserving the historically significant versions of these films.  I already posted a message about this on your Return of the Jedi thread so I won't go into too much detail here about my experience finding and watching the Despecialized Editions.  I don't want to be redundant.

Second of all, I was wondering if you've heard the rumor that the unaltered versions are being given a 4K restoration.  Reliance Media Works has a demo reel (http://vimeo.com/95919913) showing some of their work on various films and clips from Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back are included in it.  The colors in those clips look way better than they do in the 2004 DVD and 2011 Blu-Ray versions.

I've watched the demo reel multiple times and one shot of X-Wings from the original film in it caught my eye.  The shot is at the 00:58 mark.  I know that many shots of ships were either recomposited or replaced with CGI for the Special Edition.  I was wondering if this shot was recomposited or replaced.  If so, is the shot in the demo reel the original shot or the Special Edition shot?  If it is the original shot, then that would seem to me like compelling evidence that the unaltered version is being restored and will hopefully be released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Like I said, I don't know for sure if that particular shot was even changed at all to begin with and if it was, I don't know which version is the one shown in the reel.  Do you have any thoughts about this?

Really? I have BD copies I burned for shits and giggles but I only ever watch it from a thumb drive, formatted as NTFS obviously. I have an Oppo BDP-93, I just assumed most modern devices supported NTFS.... I have a buddy that has a Sammy TV and I'm almost positive it reads NTFS just fine - and a fuck ton of people have Samsung TV's. I did assume Sony devices wouldn't support it because of the Microsoft/NTFS association though. The most reasonable thing for everyone to do is buy an Oppo.

My Philips Bluray player does too, the only problem is that it only reads drives up to 2TBs in size so there is a limit to how many films and TV shows I can back up and watch on it.

Also Western digital makes some very good devices that all support NTFS.

Yes, it can. It supports the BDP-S3100 in my basement and the BDP-S5100 in my bedroom. It supports the entire Sony 2013 lineup dammit!
