I wasn't trying to argue for or against any particular side with my post. I was just trying to remove concern about hit-and-runners from the discussion while reminding everyone why many members here choose to use a private BitTorrent tracker as their primary distribution mechanism.

Oh no, I understand.  I guess my response was directed more towards those having issues finding it.  It's in enough places by now that getting a copy shouldn't be a problem.

Having said that, there are plenty of people making edits, changes, improvements, etc for every version that's out there that we can't be naive to think that LucasFilm/Disney isn't aware of them...including and especially Harmy's versions.

I'm sure it would be a different story if there were price tags involved and/or people were advertising their versions in online ads across different sites trying to get major exposure...but I think they're letting a lot of it slide only because it's a labor or love...not profit.  That and most edits are pretty much contained here in one spot and not vying for top search engine results across the board.  (thanks kickass, torrentz and piratebay - LoL)

What's the MDS file for?

It allows you to check to make sure a file you downloaded is exactly what it was supposed to be. It involves the creator creating and posting a hash of the contents of the file, which they then share and you have to create a hash using the same program and make sure it matches.

Very useful for validating files, but I've never used it.

I don't see why it should be surprising that the very same people on a forum to discuss fanedits want to watch said fanedits. I do find it surprising that such a private site is a main distribution mechanism. But I suppose there are a lot of hit-and-runners when it comes to things like this, and any private site would be abused by large swarms of "an-edit fans, while public sites obviously leave uploaders as more accessible targets.

It's not about hit-and-runners and p2p politics.

It's about keeping OT.com alive and reducing the likelihood of receiving a C&D letter. Believe it or not, a few of our members have received such a letter in the past.

Well, it's already been stated above that they can be found on piratebay as well as someone offering usenet access to get them so - I don't see where the problem lies.

I wasn't trying to argue for or against any particular side with my post. I was just trying to remove concern about hit-and-runners from the discussion while reminding everyone why many members here choose to use a private BitTorrent tracker as their primary distribution mechanism.

Yes, indeed. I was just speculating as to possible reasons.

If it comes down to distribution, which makes sense, I certainly see why the initial release should be somewhere private (though there are other sites that require membership that is not quite so impossible to get into). And the disassociation of OT with any site of distribution is what I would expect. It's even more stringent at fanedit.org and other places.

But given that not everyone who wants an invite can get one, it is nice when things are re-hosted elsewhere. I would, in theory, probably do that on other private trackers that allow fanedits. But there are obvious risks with the major public ones if you're in certain countries and not using a VPN, etc.

I don't know much about spleen. So I was mainly questioning it as the primary private tracker of interest. What I meant about "hit and runners", is that any private site with wide-scale inviting or even a temporarily open membership could seem like a good option. But the invites dry up and the memberships close when you have a mass influx of people who grab one thing and let their accounts expire. And then you still end up in a situation where people are asking/begging out in the open.

All that said, I found all of Harmy's non-workprint releases using google and a few hours of bandwidth.

edit: and thanks for the conversation and not just coming down on me for questioning things. :)

MD5 file contain hashes
MDS file contain layer-break position for burning software

Could Disney, in theory, clean up OT negatives, scan them in 4K, 8K or whatever and then just put it in storage for foreseeable future?

They have already been scanned. Look at the changed scenes in the SE. Most of them are based on a scan of the OT, with SE crap *added*.

So Lucas was being a bit misleading, at the very least, the elements had been scanned prior to the real restoration work happening.

But have they been scanned at 4K or better? I thought George Lucas settled for a much lower resolution when scanning the films.

Horrizontal - so, 2K is 2048x1080, so only slightly higher than 1080p, which is 1920x1080.

Wow. So it sounds like the existing masters for the six films really wouldn't resolve much beyond a standard 1080p presentation.

Huh. Does anyone happen to know the standard resolution of a typical digital cinema?

My stance on revising fan edits.

2K, I think.

I dunno, I live way the hell out in nowhere USA and it's typically 4K here.

They'd have to be scanned again, and that's not trivial but as the article says the main work is cleaning up the film itself and that's already been done.

There isn't a single 4K screen in my city (out of around 20 screens altogether) and I just went to see Noah the other day and sat pretty close to the biggest screen in that cinema and the 2K projection was just terrible on such a big screen - I could clearly see the pixel grid on the whole thing and it was distracting as hell (the movie sucked a** too, btw. and to add insult to injury, the audio was very uncomfortably loud and the 1.85:1 movie was projected on a 2.35:1 screen in pillabox), so I think it's a very good thing if 4K's becoming a standard.

I'm ever grateful for living near one of the nicest theaters in the country...  That and the fact it was built well enough to take minimal damage from the EF-5 tornado that passed not a few dozen yards/meters by it (a year ago next week, actually)...

Does anyone know when the ESB Despecialized 2.5 is set to release? I just finished watching the Star Wars 2.5 and I was so impressed! I can't wait to see the rest of the OT in such pristine original-ness :)

There's no time limit and Harmy is working on getting his gear back in order.  I would suggest joining the mailing list to keep up with what's going on.  It's not a monthly one...just one that gets sent out when big releases happen...like the latest Harmy's STAR WARS DE: 2.5 Remastered (AVCHD)

Try the 'spleen, if you've been invited.

If an invite the Spleen is around, I would be extremely grateful.

Ha-ha, this was such a predictable post.

Really not sure what you mean. I have tried a number of different routes, all to no avail. If I was not genuine in my interest for the project and the film, I would not have gone through the effort to ask here. No need to be elitist. This is supposed to be a fan project, and I am a fan who has had difficulty accessing this project.

Elitist?  Hah!  I think that having it on a site that requires invites is almost as annoying as people requesting invites in a thread meant for discussing the project.  Read the first post in this thread.

I don't mean to offend someone who actually does work here, but this one was absolutely predictable and unhelpful as well.

Can anyone help me with what command should I use to add black bars to my video in avisynth - so far I always rendered all my lossless videos with the black bars already in but with lossless, it adds a lot of unnecessary bitrate and therefore size.
