Interesting. Might the Amazon version be easier to work with?

Thanks for saving me a job Harmy :p

I am confused as to why people would want A New Hope in the crawl. This project was to restore the film to as close as possible to what was seen in 1977. "A New Hope" wasn't there and shouldn't be, IMO. Adding it to Harmy's masterpiece seems counter-productive to the original goal.
I have OCD I am George Lucas
Hey! That's not nice to those of us who actually have OCD.
George doesn't have OCD. He's just a dick.

Zer0Squared, where does the newsletter get sent to? I should be subscribed already.
It's sent to whoever has signed up to the list and gets sent through MailChimp. If you're sure you signed up with the right email address, you can check your spam folder or if you're using Gmail I'm told it sometimes goes to one of the other folders (can't remember which one right now.)
PM me your email address and I'll double-check you're on the list.

I now own the "The Making of Star Wars" iBook. I've been working on deDRM'ing the 720p for you, Harmy.
The iBook itself isn't encrypted. In fact, the ".ibooks" format is just a ZIP file, so renaming it as ".zip" allows me to get at the contents with 7-Zip.
The deDRM program, Requiem 4.1 (the final version), will only work with iTunes 10.7, so I have it and iTunes 10.7 installed in a Windows XP virtual machine running on VirtualBox.
Requiem claims that it can't find any DRM'd files in my iTunes library (yes, I made sure to download the book with iTunes in the VM first), so I extracted all the files and invoked it from the command-line as "requiem.exe input-file output-file" where input-file is one of the m4v files from the iBook.
Requiem determines that the m4v is DRM'd, but gets stuck in the "working" state and never produces an output file.
This is just a progress update.

An alternative possibility is that there's no DRM at all and I just can't play ProRes files with VLC. I tried playing one of the m4v files with the latest QuickTime, but it wouldn't work there either, so I assume they're DRM'd.

Great, thanks for the update! I hope you manage to do it.

Thanks. Do you have the ability to play ProRes files on your computer? I want to be 100% certain that these are all DRM'd before spending even more time on it...

I am not sure. Never tried.

If I send you one of the files in 2-3 hours, can you check?
Also, everyone: I only setup the VM because I have iTunes 11.x installed and Requiem 4.1 will only work with, at most, iTunes 10.7. I didn't want to downgrade my iTunes installation.

Yes, because the amazon version has no DRM, and so every video you've seen from the book is from the amazon version.
But that misses the point, as the itunes version is higher resolution.

Yep, that's exactly why I'm working with this.
Plus, I love my iPad and I was going to buy the "Enhanced" books anyway.

I hadn't heard about this. I bought the Making of Return of the Jedi on Kindle and view it on my iPad. Where are the comparison of specs between the Kindle eBook and iBook?
UPDATE: Nevermind, just downloaded an iBook sample and the iBook is CLEARLY better and higher resolution. Some photos in the Kindle edition are pixelated, and crystal clear on the iBook. Kind of miffed that the difference wasn't advertised, however, can't complain to be paying $12.99 twice for this collection of amazing content.
I found the versions of the eBooks without DRM at the following address :
(deleted)
I was able to play the media files (mp3 and mp4) with VLC.

I don't think this includes the 720p videos. My .ibooks file is 200MiB larger.

What's the resolution of the videos? If they're not 720...then yes, we can all do that.
You're right, it's 480p.
I thought the videos in the iTunes version are compressed with mpeg4, what does ProRes have to do with it? That is an intermediate codec with low compression.

The filenames all have ProRes in them.

Oh I see, that perhaps means that they are from a ProRes-encoded source.
Unfortunatelly all available options for DRM removal seem to include re-encoding the videos. Have you tried to do it on a Mac?

To be clear, you are working on a method to remove DRM so that Harmy can convert the video from the eBook that he already owns to a more convenient backup format (i.e. fair use).

Are you OK with a re-encode if it's at an absurdly-high bitrate?

Totally, no problem - I will be converting it to lossless though, so if there was a possibility to re-encode straight to lagarith or UTVideo, that'd be best.
Just to be clear, what theatrical footage is on this exactly? The ROTJ ghosts? Are we sure it's not an upscale yet?
