Harmy, when you get to TPM, please don't despecialize me out.
Rest assured, I have no intention to despecialize TPM :-)

I did see that the dvd for Empire is out, but haven't had a chance to do much with SW stuff lately. Feel free to PM me with the links and I'll check it out as soon as I can. ;)
Since you seem to be very good at lining up frames from different sources, I had an idea about the problematic transition in the Mos Eisley test where the Jabba scene would be. Would it be possible to dissolve between the '04 footage and GOUT before and after this takes place? (Maybe using the '04 dvd instead of the HD for some of it so it's not as big a jump in resolution?) So dissolve to scripted GOUT as the big-nose guy starts towards the camera, allowing the original optical transition to take place, and then dissolve back to '04 before the Millennium Falcon is seen. Would this work? The colour would have to be matched exactly, and the '04 would have to be cropped to match G-force's framing, but it seems like something worth trying. Or, alternatively, a more lengthy portion of GOUT for the whole thing if that wouldn't work. The only other thing I can think of is slowing down the footage to match the original number of frames, but I don't think that would look right at all.

I think I already figured out how to do it using the HD footage only but I'll have to test it to confirm. I want to avoid using the GOUT footage as much as possible but slowing the footage down considerably seems even worse, so if it doesn't work, I think I'll just keep the straight cut.
Well, here it is, the latest attempt of removing the Jabba scene as closely to the theatrical version as possible (2006 DVD is in the lower left corner for comparison). It's not 100% accurate but it's as close as it's gonna get without resolving to using 06DVD footage. This clips also contains new version of the "door is locked" shot.
There is also the shot of Luke selling his speeder with the added ships in the background removed. I tried replacing the whole sky bit but the telecine shake on the 06DVD made it stand out like a sore thumb, which is something I am battling constantly (it's a problem present in every one of the rotoscoped shots to some degree) and I'd really love to know how to do something about it. I tried the stabilizing function in AE but it doesn't seem to work too well on it.

Ok, I thought that would be the case. You're right of course, you tend to be overly critical when you know what flaws to look for, as a complete film experience these versions you make will certainly be fantastic for most viewers, don't let my comments dampen your spirit, I'm just a stubborn purist. What you're able to achieve here is quite awesome.I've watched Harmy's ESB close to 20 times in the last couple of weeks, and if you're not satisfied with that masterpiece, you're not going to be satisfied with anything short of perfection (which we'll never see). We've all waited nearly forever for the Original Trilogy, and now thanks to Harmy, we'll have it. Harmy's cuts are so damn good, I think they're the first versions that are above nitpicking. They're so beautiful I'm not going to waste my time searching for flaws.
I can admit that I came off like a dick in my earlier statement in this thread (but you like di*** Rob, don't you ;) when I read it again and it was unnecessary and stupid of me and for that I'm sorry Harmy. But the post I made that you quote here, I don't see any problem with, I thought the test-clips he uploaded here was meant to be scrutinized and to give him some feedback on how to maybe improve upon them (it can be argued however if my feedback on the mos eisley clip was constructive or not).
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

@Rob: Wow, thanks, you make me blush ;-D
Just a fair warning though: While ESB was like 99% the theatrical cut, SW will only be like 95% and Jedi maybe even just like 90% theatrical cuts, because there were some scenes, which will have to be recut slightly to get rid of most of the SE while keeping it HD quality, unless the GOUT upscales prove to be better than I expect. In Jedi for example I'll have to recut the ending celebration and in SW I'll have to cut around the Luke and Biggs scene before the battle of Yavin. I'm going to do both of those scenes similarly to their PDE versions, which you can see here and here, although I'll try to recut the Jedi ending in a way to keep away from creating continuity errors. And there are other smaller things here and there.
Harmy, will these recuts affect the soundtracks?
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Not at all, I quite understand and you're right, I do post these clips to get feedback and I'm happy for it :-)

No. Actually that's basically the whole point of those recuts, to keep it in sync with the original soundtrack.

Harmy is "the door is locked" shot final, did you notice the shadow of the floating droid turning the right corner?. The Jabba removal scene looks excellent now.
Yeah, I noticed the shadow. It was there in the previous clip too, I might still try doing something about it.
Regarding the end of ROTJ, As long as Luke does his wink/nod to the three ghosts, I'll be happy.
Best split second of the trilogy.
Seriously, I agree with the homosexual gentleman 100%.

That looks pretty damn seamless Harmy. Fantastic as always. Your obsessive attention to detail is going to pay off once again with ANH.
As for you Ms. Y Camore, I'm sooo close to going all diva on you.

Hey Harmy, if the telecine shake is the greatest problem can't you just use DJ's v3? I think it would be well worth waiting for a copy, as the scripts utilized originally started out to stop the jitter.

Yeah, except that it doesn't. DJ kindly uploaded the whole Mos Eisley sequence and while it looks great for being sourced from GOUT, the shake is the same if not worse than on the DVD.

OK, here's the whole Mos Eisley sequence:

It is just work in progress. There are still a few bugs and Greedo is missing subtitles. Also the colours are not final.
Harmy, you are doing amazing, amazing work. This is the SW version many of us dreamed about. Can't wait.
Really? That surprises me, I guess I was entirely uninformed. Oh well, I guess it can't be helped...
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
Yeah, I was surprised by that too. I was kind of counting on it to solve that problem for me.

Please, don't do that. Take a look at this... http://www.out.com/slideshows/?slideshow_title=The-Gayest-Robots&theID=12#Top
...it will sheer you up!
Edit: it's not that off topic, another Lucas robot made that list. ;)

If I know Rob, and Christ knows I do, this thread will end with a handful of his mustache hairs two inches above your anus. Right outside the combat zone.
It's true that the script doesn't completely manage to eliminate the image shake from the GOUT video. It does, however, reduce it considerably, so that it's only visible in certain areas when looking rather closely. The film experience as a whole is vastly improved by this, and while I'm sure it still presents a problem in merging with higher quality footage, it has to be better than using the plain GOUT by itself.
Dunno if I'm sold on the transition or not, because it looks weird seeing the beginning of an optical wipe and a dissolve happening at the same time--still, it's better than it was before.
I almost wish the remaining shadow of the probe thing hadn't been pointed out, because now I can't unsee it. So it looks like you're going to have to get rid of that too . . . ;)
Yeah, I'll be removing the shadow :-)
Also, someone said (I don't remember where, may have been a PM) that they'll stick to the PDE, because it's 1080p. So I just wanted to make sure that it's understood that these should be better qality with larger amount of detail than the PDE, because in the 1080p sources I used for the PDE a lot of detail was eaten up by compression. Here's a comparison of the source I used for the PDE (Ady's 1080p AVCHD) and the source I'm using now (7GB 720p mkv). Notice the detail in Obi-Wan's face and the grain on the panels behind him.
Here's another little video. Please comment :-)

Looks gorgeous Harmy. Perfect. Will you be able to fix the tractor beam text from the gibberish back to "tractor beam"? Also, are the flashes and flames when they shoot the guards in the chest in the detention area gone for good, or can those be salvaged somehow? I always liked how there shirts actually looked to be on fire in the original.
