Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 252

In particular those first shots of the X-wings approaching the death star look really great and film-like. Considering those iconic shots haven't been seen by almost anybody since some theatrical showings in the 80s, (videotapey crap aside) it's pretty awesome.

I've made a torrent for the fixed DVD5 over at the spleen if anybody's looking for it; CatBus nuked his upload of the old one some time earlier today.

So I downloaded the nuked one, and is it just that that transfer had something weird going on, or does the 2.0 in general have a very DVNR look to it?

A lot of the details looked very waxy, like there had been a "look like a painting" filter applied to it. I thought maybe it was just some sort of upscaling done on GOUT footage or something like that, but it didn't look like it was GOUT sourced (and wasn't even footage that would have needed to be de-CGIed).

No. It was nuked because of Hairy's encoding error on the audio.

I don't know what the DVD5 looks like (I'm gonna have to get it when I get home, as I can't use torrents here) but otherwise I'd say that v2.0 looks anything but DVNred and waxy.

Agreed.  There is no way in hell that any part of this looks "processed" on the MKV.  Perhaps it is a product of the extreme loss in quality from HD to DVD5?

I might lower the gamma slightly on a few shots in the Luke meets Ben scene, but that's as far as I'm going with it.

Ok that's good, that's the only scene that need to have the gamma a shade lower.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Can you give a link? I can't find it on there.

Thanks again for your hard work.

The AVCHD now has all the fixed tracks, but for anyone who downloaded the mkv or the first DVD5 and wants to replace the audio with corrected versions, I posted the links for the 5.1 in my thread, here.

It may not be necessary, but just for good measure, here are the re-encoded stereo and mono as well:

part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4

Thank you, hairy_hen!

Damn you, SendSpace!  Gotta wait an hour to finish one of these?  Sheesh!

Beginning download of the AVCHD now. (EDIT: Speeds are actually half-decent at ~1.5MBps!)

And the DVD5 does NOT look bad...certainly not waxy or dvnr'd.

Woo! Almost finished downloading the AVCHD.

I wonder if you're seeing a side effect of the black crush that the Blu-ray source suffers from.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

just watched your version on a bigscreen tv yesterday,

it matched our's pretty closely also... for some reason

watching it on a tv with different settings was quite

different from viewing it on a monitor....

i'm used to watching almost all my videos on monitors,

so it's just a matter of setting your color preferences

to match what you think is right.

I wonder, do you think this has something to do with the differences in output range between TVs and computers?

that, and the colorspace..

but mostly the gamma settings are different for

those devices..

also, once harmy tweaks the scene (or scenes),

it will match even more closely with the

reference shots..

I don't know why it would cause those kinds of side effects, but yeah, I noticed that color correcting the black crush gives it a weird sort of feel.

I don't know, the one I watched did.

I'd take screenshots, but I deleted it already =) I'll download the fixed one and check to see if it looks the same.

Yep, the fixed one looks the same.

Here's a really good example: http://i47.tinypic.com/9tzdy0.png

This isn't my computer, though, so maybe it's just a codec issue or something.

Oh, wow, ok, that's ugly. I hope the DVD5 doesn't actually look like that and it's just something set wrong on your computer. Couldn't it be something with the way your computer uspscales the DVD?
