Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Grindhouse 35mm LPP — Page 12

Actually, not exactly! The Grindhouse has a notable green shift, especially in the space sequences, and as Harmy explained, the colors are not representative of the colors of a projected print.

The regrade itself is not meant to be representative of any specific color grading, other than a reduction of the excess green, and the lowering of contrast, which is pretty high for the Grindhouse at times.

The actual colors of the theatrical presentation of the film are less green. In other words, skies are not teal, and the desert (at least for the C-3PO/R2-D2 shot) is not golden. Here’s a photo of an unfaded 16mm print of ROTJ, which is generally more contrasty than the 35mm, but does feature the same color timing in terms of hues:

Here’s the Grindhouse regraded to match the 16mm:

That’s so weird. I think the original uncorrected images (at least the desert) are more appealing to the eye, but evidently I must be mistaken. Surely there’s another way to interpret the images?

Well, when regraded to the 16mm, the sky still has a shade of cyan, and C-3PO retains a golden brass shade. All that plus the dark shadows, contrast, etc. feel more like film than the regrading attempt on the previous page, missa think.

That’s because the first regrade is not supposed to be film like, but more akin to a home video transfer with lower contrast. The last regrade is actually a direct match to a frame of film, hence it’s film like appearance. 😉

It’s also interesting to note, that the theatrical color timing in the days before digital color grading, weren’t exactly consistently balanced like we are used to these days, which in some ways adds to the unique character of the film experience.

You can’t really be mistaken when it comes to your impressions of what appeals to the eye. 😃 Original (or intended) looks were not necessarily aesthetically appealing ones. As it happens, I too prefer the Grindhouse, but the 16mm match looks good as well.

The 16 mm match looks fine. Maybe that’s the outcome of the Blu Rays: We hate any shade of blue 😉

Yeah, that’s okay, just a little too dark and too much contrast IMO.

Weirdly enough, from the other post the first one looked like GOUT and the second like the DVD edition. Having not seen neither of those for over 10 years I could be wrong but that’s just how they felt, haha.

Has anyone released an .iso file for this? Particularly in the same place we might look for other releases? I saw an .mkv file, but I’ve never converted one before. Before I attempt it, I wondered if anyone had already converted it as I’d like to have one burned to a disk. Thanks. Looking forward to checking this out sometime soon.

Just use tsmuxer to rebuild it into an ISO. It’s not re-encoded that way and there is no quality loss, so no one needs to go through the trouble of uploading another 20 Gb for that purpose. Worked smoothly for me with this release.

I have an md5sum of:

md5sum Return.of.the.Jedi.Grindhouse.35mm.LPP.1080p.mkv
521e180b2b825d1798d414244134147e *Return.of.the.Jedi.Grindhouse.35mm.LPP.1080p.mkv

Which differs from the OP has their been another release?

I got my RotJ Grindhouse from the paradoxical place (which is down at present), and the checksums agree with those given in the OP.

  • Filename: Return.of.the.Jedi.Grindhouse.35mm.LPP.mkv (this lacks the “.1080p” in yours)
  • Filesize: 22,872,868,821 bytes

If your filesize agrees, chances are you have a corrupted download. If not, you may well have an unofficial release, possibly a re-encode of some sort.

As far as I know, only one version of the 1080p Grindhouse mkv is “officially” available i.e. the original release.

First of all thanks for all releases/versions 😉

Need to know if this is still available for download and/or where to look.

Thank you

It’s on Usenet.
For the MKV version, search on NZBKing for: return grindhouse
For the DVD5 & DVD9 versions: search on NZBKing for: rotj grindhouse

Why do you want this when 4k83 is a thing? If it’s for the grindhouse look, there’s a grindhouse version of 4k83 IIRC.

At least right now, 4k83 is still a bit lacking in the color correction department, so if you’re looking for “that projection print look” this one can look better in that regard. But yeah, I get where you’re coming from. Color aside, 4k83 is the Cadillac of projection print preservations. This is kindof a VW Microbus with an awesome paint job. It may not be king of the road but it’s still pretty nice.

But also there’s just people who like to have all the versions, or who want to compare and judge for themselves.

I like the look of it. Reminds me of what was like going to the cinema 30 years ago.

Has anyone done a dirt/stabilization of this? It has great colors compared to 4K83 but I’m not good at cleaning things up.

Having recently compared them, I actually like the colors of this better too (not to blow my own horn 😉) but I think it would be much easier and a more worthy effort to recolor 4K83 than to clean this.

Being the expert on despecialized and what that takes, do you think 4K83 has enough color depth to replace the SE parts?

Author

Yeah, I think so.

There was no download link to begin with.
