THANK YOU! Please regular posters, feel absolutely free to speak for me, whenever one of these ever-repeating questions comes up. It gets really very tiring, typing the same stuff like two times a week, so I'm very happy, when someone steps up like this a answers for me. And then, if I have anything to add or amend, I will. In this case, I don't - couldn't possibly have said it better myself.

Sorry for being so "annoying." *sigh*

...

And please remember that at 28 pages, it's impossible to read this entire thread when one hasn't been reading it from the get-go.

 Two things.

1) No need to put "annoying" in quotes.
2) 28 pages is nothing.

1. I felt there was. It was that single word I was referencing.

2. I usually can spend maybe five minutes reading the forums. Even right now, I have less than that and am putting work aside to be here. There is no way I can get through 28 pages. My life is just far too chaotic. I wish it were not so.

And to Harmy, if my words were misconstrued in any way, I apologize. It was not my intent to insult your work and I do not believe I did. As I have stated here and elsewhere, the Harmy restorations are nothing short of astounding (SW 2.5 being mind blowing). You can search for me here and elsewhere and will easily see that (not to mention all of my efforts in correcting the terrible edits and alterations to numerous Hong Kong classics). I wouldn't waste a stack of my best DVD9's to give SW v2.5 to friends and family if I was not blown away. I even stole my brother inlaw's official DVD's and replaced them with the Harmy Editions. He's long hated the SE's and now he won't have to deal with them.

And my post on the prior page is almost exclusively praising your work and my excitement in sharing it with my nieces.

What sparked my post was my finally being able to sit down and watch the Harmy JEDI on a large screen, I was shocked at how those eyebrows yanked me out of the film. I wish I had chosen my words more delicately to describe my reaction and AGAIN... I apologize. It wasn't my intent. No one here is perfect.

My suggestion is simple wit this issue. Only correct it if it can be done without being a distraction. That is just my own personal view. I am not demanding it be done. I am simply stating my viewpoint and hope it will at least be considered.

Thanks for your time.

P.S. My nieces thought STAR WARS was the coolest thing they have ever seen. They even liked it more than The Hunger Games, which I thought would be impossible. We will watch EMPIRE sometimes next month. And then JEDI soon after.

@Turisu: Actually, the sharpening isn't from the downscale script but rather from the upscaling. Here's a simple bicubic upscale in PS. There is some detail loss off course but it's super minor.

I think the standard bicubic upscale looks markedly better than the image you generated using the script. Whatever was causing his tan shirt collar to look unnaturally jagged is gone now.

ONCE AGAIN - the script has nothing to do with the upscaling, it was used for the downscaling - on both this and the first comparison.

Sorry, you're right -- should have paid closer attention to what you were saying. Your releases are 720p anyway. You were using bicubic sharper in the first example, I take it? That's why it has jaggies?

It was actually a printscreen of MPC upscaling it but I applied some sharper settings than I normally use, thinking it will show off the quality of the downscale even better but I didn't notice the artifacts at the time.

Ah, okay! Well, your last image looks really fantastic, that's for sure! It's amazing how little is lost -- just like your old Peter Cushing example. As you mentioned, the differences are super minor and would be all but invisible at recommended seating distances.

For the record: The Avisynth script I sent Harmy doesn't do anything fancy. It just uses ResampleHQ for downscaling (with a Spline36 kernel). http://int64.org/projects/resamplehq/

It is the only filter used after input.

No tricks, I promise. It's not a trap.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Hey, I was just wondering what the progress on Jedi 2.0 was since there really haven't been any big updates like on Empire (at least not that I've seen, sorry if I'm repeating things). Is there a long wait for the TN1 35mm's? Those would be the most important sources to get the dance scene and missing Jabba moment looking good. I guess it's also likely the best way to restore the eyebrows as well as Anakin's more skin-colored face rather than that weird grayish tone in the SE. Anyway, I was just wondering what the ETA on Jedi is, I'm desperate to see Lapti and the eyebrows in high quality! :-)

as my understanding goes, the negative 1 35mm shots won't be used until 2.1

Well, that was the original plan but since they already promised to give them to me, it just seems like a terrible amount of work to try and despecialize all those shots, only to have to do it again soon after, so I will be waiting for the N1 sources, however long it takes for them to be delivered.

That's a good idea, and given how well the N1 sources worked in Star Wars, I have no worries that they'll look pretty damn good in Jedi as well. They'll be a huge step up from the GOUT anyway. Not to be completely impatient, but is there an ETA on their arrival? Even if it is just a rough guess?

Not really, unfortunately - probably somewhere between a couple of weeks and couple of months (I hope the former but there's no guarantee).

Author

I'm personally in no hurry and the shots will be worth the wait, so I agree - take a breather

Is there any chance you might return to your plan to do Episode 1?

@pittrek: I might, yeah

@Hostmaster: That project is only to make the prequel HDTV/BDs look more like film, not to return them to the original cuts.

OK, so since it seems like I'll be working with an increasing number of film-based sources, I'd really like to learn how to do film cleanup and I don't even know where to begin. What I want is basic denoising for when I need to match grain-levels to other sources but mainly, I need a way, to automatically remove dirt and spots - it doesn't really matter, if it mistakenly erases other details, like stars and stuff like that, since I would then only utilize the cleaned up version for manual cleanup in After Effects.

Oh and some good image stabilization, which would only remove gate-weave would also be totally awesome.

Doing this kind of thing in After Effects is less than ideal, since it was never made for film-restoration and I also tried PF Clean and I just couldn't get it to work but I couldn't afford the full version of PF Clean anyway, so I'd really like to learn how to do by myself what Laserschwert has been doing for me so far, so that I don't have to bother him with it. So I guess my question really is how to do this sort of thing in Avisynth.

If you can help, please respond in the thread in the how-to section here.

Will there be 35mm sources for the Sail Barge scene, like when Han almost falls off, but without the added ropes, as well as just for the old sarlac in general? Sorry if I'm asking a question there isn't an answer to yet, but what all 35mm scenes are going to be used for Jedi 2.0?

The Person in Question

Well, I'll take all the better sources I can get but right now, the Sarlacc pit scene isn't really the priority to me, because it's probably the best despecialized scene of all v1.0s - there are a couple of shots I'd like to have better sources for there too but the eyebrows and Lapti Nek definitely take precedence for v2.0.

Any idea if this is a specialized addition or is it true OT ?

I for the life of me can't remember.

It's too well integrated; there's no way it's the SE!

Yeah, unless they run to the foreground and start dancing, they're probably original.

BTW, it is nice to see just how much "bounty hunter scum" got taken out along with Jabba.
