Yeah, I decided to skip v2.0 for ROTJ, since the v2.0WP got a pretty wide release and v2.0 was supposed to be just the same as the WP only with a couple of fixes, but you’ll see this new version is much more than just that, so the next version, (which should be out late this week or early next week, I know I keep pushing it but it’ll be worth it, you’ll see, 😉 ) will be v2.5, followed soon by v2.5 of ESB, which will get all three movies on the same version and then I can focus on getting v3.0s done (v3.0 will be 1080p, so I’ll need to start pretty much from scratch on those).

Sounds fantastic. Looks like ROTJ 2.5 will come out just as I get some holidays - too good Harmy 😃

The most pressing question I have though, and I’d really appreciate a definitive statement is, Are the TIE fighters going to vanish? If so, have they already been corrected, or is that yet to be fixed before the release?

Mildly interested in the answer too.

I know it sounds like you’re joking, but you’ve brought this one enough times that I think you really do care about it.

I’m sure in the end, he’ll want to have every detail taken care of. This is someone who added a random hair in a frame back to SW. But for now, there are some recomps still present in Jedi (whether or not this is one), and I find it pretty funny to be most interested in a missing error, as opposed to (for instance) an error introduced by SE compositing (Obiwan).

I also think it’s fine to leave some of the fairly harmless recomps for now. The picture quality can take a bit of a dip when switching to 35mm footage. If better sources, cleanups, or rotoscoping can be done for 3.0, it would be tempting to have the more completionist despecializing, as was attempted for SW 2.5.

Anyway, I’m interested in the answer too, now. 😛 I’m sure you’ve put it on his radar, if nothing else. 😃

I’ve always wondered whether there’s a massive difference between 720p and 1080p, especially for a film like SW. Looks great as it is!

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Will the files be posted on uloz or somewhere like last time? I hope so! 😃

I personally think that there is no need to release v3.0 of all of the films at once - simply because SW v2.5 really needs an update and there is more demand for Despecialiazed SW than for ESB and ROTJ (mainly because this film is the most altered). Also, v3.0 of SW will be the biggest leap because apparently a bunch of new sources became available. But that’s just my humble opinion, of course it depends on Harmy and the rest of the community.

Anyway, really looking forward to v2.5 of ROTJ and all other future releases, thank you Harmy!

I agree, but of course Harmy will do whatever is right for him. If you ignore the issue of resolution, SW 3.0 will probably bring it closer in overall quality to ESB and RoTJ 2.5 (i.e., very little GOUT, great color, etc). But I’m sure it’s the most challenging of the films as well, so I could understand wanting to switch to working on the other films to avoid burnout.

My idea is to work on all 3 v3.0s though and release them all at once but we’ll see how that works out.

I’m all for this. This should give you a chance to have more time on each one. I would recommend you do workprints, though, as a way for the community to help with QC like the 2.0 WP.

Not to mention that by working on them at around the same time, it would be easier for him to keep the quality consistent (technique and source improvements over time is what led ESB and ROTJ to be better than SW V2.5 in the first place).

Quick question: Are the wipes going to be the theatrical ones in the 3.0 trilogy?

Author
Time

I’d love to see maybe a SW 2.7, just to get all three films on par with each other. Then after that 3.0 can all be released together.

As for the TIE fighters vanishing it actually is a legitimate obsession of mine. It’s my least favorite change in the entire trilogy right behind the Mos Eisley CGI, Greedo shooting first, the Jabba scene, the rock in front of R2D2, the explosion praxis, the added Wampa footage, the CGI windows in Bespin, the added Vader shuttle footage, the added Biggs scene, the new Jabba dance scene, the Sarlacc mouth, the CGI added to Jabba’s palace and the banthas, the ewoks blinking, Vader screaming NOO, the fake smooth jazz ewok music, and Hayden Christiansen’s ghost.

Anyway, any update on the vanishing TIE fighters Harmy? Could we get a comparison video with V1, V2WP, V2.5 and the GOUT?

Honestly, when you first asked about this, I wasn’t even sure what you were talking about, because in 005’s gallery, the description of the shot doesn’t mention vanishing tie fighters - I had to go in and compare the shots frame-by-frame to see it. But the whole shot’s been recomposited and there seems to be little point to just making the tiny little fighters vanish for two frames without actually replacing the whole shot.

As for the Obi-Wan face-branch shot, that is definitely on my to do list for ROTJ v2.5 but I haven’t touched it yet, so we’ll see how difficult it proves to be.

Other people already answered pretty well but to sum up - SW will be the hardest one to do, because A) it has the most changes and B) I will already have plenty of Despecialized shots I will be able to use from v2.5 of the other two. So it will be nice to be able to take a break from SW and work on Empire or Jedi for a bit. I actually did consider doing a quick v2.6 or something of SW, because I expect v3.0s to take a long time to finish, but we’ll see.

I don’t know yet - the thing about wipes is that they are very difficult to clean and stabilize and I’m not sure if they are worth the quality drop - will have to do some tests and see.

Oh I didn’t realize that. Do you have access to that shot on film to restore the original composite? If the original shot could not be restored for 2.5, making the fighters disappear anyway would still hold the original integrity of the effect to a certain degree. After all, preservation of the original films to the fullest extent possible is what Despecialized is all about. 😉

I was able to find the 720p 3GB torrent for this, along with STAR WARS and The Empire Strikes Back, but don’t know which version number it is. Does MySpleen have a BD25 1080p version? I’m about to look very soon.

Which version you have is shown after the end credits. After the last of the end credits scroll by, the screen fades to black and the music ends, wait about 5 seconds and the version information will appear.

Alright I’m going to check with MPC-HC.
Harmy’s Despecialized for the STAR WARS OT have multiple dubs and subs, correct? I haven’t been following his project and was sticking to other parts of the forum. I should do more research or just read the first posts of his threads.

EDIT: For the Despecialized, STAR WARS is v2.5, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi is MMXI. I’ll look for newer versions of the latter two.

All except Return of the Jedi. Right now only 1.0 and a 2.0 Workprint have been released, and they only included English Dolby tracks.

Though IIRC 1.0 may have had a Czech or German dub or something, but it didn’t have nearly as many as SW/ESB 2.5/2.0

That would be awesome. Maybe even just a workprint along the way, like Jedi 2.0 ended up being.

Nope, they won’t be posted anywhere. You have to go to Harmy’s house, where he will hand you a flash drive.

Yeah, I will definitely do some workprints for v3.0s - starting from scratch, there will be a large probability of errors.

We’ll see about v2.6 - if I did one, it would be just quickly splicing TN1’s shots in place of GOUT shots into the v2.5 lossless master and maybe fixing some of the more obvious color problems (it would probably end up looking somewhat like the Respecialized Edition).

Well, he lives somewhere on earth, just go door to door demanding it. Eventually you will find him. In all seriousness though, what would you do if Disney sent a representative to your house, and asked you to work on an official release?

Is working on a v2.6 really worth it? I’d much prefer to have 3.0 done a couple of weeks earlier than to have a SW v2.6! It almost seems irrelevant and a waste of your precious time Harmy!

It is a shame that the movie version of Lapti Nek never made it on to any of the soundtracks, at least as a bonus. GL strikes again. It would have made the commentary problem easier to deal with, but I think we’ll live. 😃

They just released a vinyl box set and according to Discogs.com Return of the Jedi has Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration. http://www.amazon.ca/Star-Wars-Ultimate-Soundtrack-Vinyl/dp/B015NOT9AY/ref=sr_1_2_twi_lp__2?ie=UTF8&qid=1454401278&sr=8-2&keywords=john+williams+collection+star+wars
