Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 4

Subs looking great Harmy. Is it Franklin Gothic? I could see on that clip that you didn't use the original 1983 Theatrical timings though, but I don't know how important that really is to most people. Going by that clip they look more smooth and natural than my subs for the GOUT. Good job! :)

Yeah, I'm integrating them into the video in AE and I'm trying to make them look as much a part of the film as possible by having them slightly blurred and going a tiny little bit in and out of focus and making them very slightly shaky and adding slight grain to them.

The font is Franklin Gothic Demi Cond but it is adjusted in photoshop. I took the EoD screenshot of the "He must be allowed to speak." line, wrote the line in PS using Franklin Gothic Demi Cond and then I manually adjusted it to fit the theatrical sub in the EoD screenshot. Photoshop then remembers the manual setting, so all the other subs should be the same adjusted font and therefore really close to the original. I tested it by making the "You weak-minded fool" sub and then putting it over the EoD screenshot of that line and it fit almost perfectly.

EDIT: Oh and yeah, I just used the timing of the hardcoded subs from the HD file.

Sounds like a very nice way of doing them. :) And I must say that hat you're wearing on your avatar Harmy, if it's actually you, is really badass looking. Don't forget that you need a cane with that outfit with the head of the cane in the form of a skull. ;)

Just had to ask... was that an intentional reference to Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein?

Harmy, at 5:23 right after Jabba says "At last we have the mighty Chewbacca" you cut away to a close up of Chewbacca.

This is not right.

I just checked the GOUT and the camera stays on Jabba as he "burps".

I hope this is just tentative and you'll fix it later. (?)

No, it will stay the way it is here. It's a reverse shot of Chewie from later in the scene. I always said I was gonna have to do that in order to remove the stupid added shot of Boba Fett flirting with the SE dancers. I did it exactly like this in the PDE and I think it works really well. In the ROTJ DVD Reconstruction I decided to use the GOUT shot and it stands out like a sore thumb even at DVD resolution, because that particular shot looks like crap in the GOUT. I experimented with only using Jabba from GOUT for the missing part but the quality difference is so huge that it just wouldn't work.

Stay the course, Harmy.  You should never listen to someone who has the hots for Sy Snootles.

Do you rearrange (cut) the audiotracks also, then?

I'm asking, because I replaced the czech audiotrack on SW and ESB with the audiotrack in my motherlanguage. Therefore I had to demux my PAL GOUT DVD's, slowed the audio down from 25fps to 23,9 fps and remuxed the video- and audiostreams. My new created audiostreams matched perfectly with your videostream.

So, I will probably have to cut my ROTJ audiotrack???

Are you going to be using any of the GOUT footage for the Rancor scene like you did in the theatrical reconstruction?  The change over was really distracting.  Since you did remove the garbage mattes in SW DeEd I don't see why you'd want to keep the matte lines in Jedi.

No no, the whole point of inserting the shot in there was to keep it in sync with the GOUT audio. I'm really bad with audio editing, so I'm trying to avoid it by making the video sync with the audio.

Wonderful!!!

I mean then everybody can combine the videostream you made with the audiostream in his motherlanguage from the GOUT DVD if he wants. With MeGUI it is really not difficult.

A) I don't see what garbage mattes have to do with this. Garbage mattes are something completely different than matte lines. Matte lines were visible in cinemas every time since opening day until 1997 or 2004. Garbagge mattes, under ideal conditions, should not be visible - they are there but you don't see them - and that's exactly what I did in SW DeEd: I adjusted the levels to make the garbage mattes invisible. If you pumped up the brightness in those shots, you'd find the garbage mattes are still there.

B) I don't think the original Rancor was distracting in the Reconstruction - all the shots except for maybe one blended in really well, because I used natively anamorphic footage from GKar 97SE.

C) The GKar footage would look like shit in HD and so does the GOUT in this scene, so after unsuccessfully trying to somehow restore the original compositing, while using the HD footage (like I did here or here for example), I decided to just leave in the 04SE shots. I'm seriously not happy about it but it seems like I don't really have a choice in the matter.

"At last we have the mighty Chewbacca"

Maybe you can find this scene on "Empire of Dreams" in High Quality.

There are a few shots in there but they seem to be from the same or a similar source as GOUT.

That would have been sweet to see the original composition restored, but in this case, with the rest of the cut being so smooth, I'd rather see the new comp than the old comp with low res footage.  Especially in a scene like this were it would have to switch back and forth a lot.

I just finished the DL for Empire and that Falcon shot does look pretty awesome.

Thanks :-) Yeah, the problem there is that the elements are slightly shifted in the recomps, so they don't align well. The KGar footage is pretty good in terms of resolution (as far as anamorphic DVD goes) but it has pretty bad compression and even worse DVNR artefacts. And the GOUT doesn't suffer from these problems as much but it's even lower res and is quite grainy, so I think I will have to just keep the recomps.

Aww...Too bad. Let me respectfully disagree.

Sorry, but its a bit of a cop out - what you did there.

At least you explained why you did it. Oh, well... *shrug*

Yeah, I don't know what else you'd have me do. The GOUT would stand out really badly and there's no other source I could use. It is a cop out, I admit it, it just seems like the best possible solution. The only other thing I could do is keep the SE Boba Fett shot and I'm not doing that.

On a different note, here's a comparison of some of the subs that are in the Empire of Dreams documentary. Top is EoD, bottom is DeEd (before colour correction):

Harmy, it is not a cop-out.  A cop-out is when you take the easy route because you are lazy.

But yeah, it's definitely not because I'm lazy. I'd spent hours experimenting with it before I decided that this solution will be best for everyone.

Oh snap! You went Jar Jar on his ass. So when are we going to see the officially licensed Harmy t-shirt? Let's face it, the demand is there. I will be cutting mine into a sexy half-shirt or at least tying it up in a knot to simulate a sexy half shirt. Maybe you should consider selling both t-shirts and half shirts so as not to alienate the gay community.
