Not that I’m against a V 3.0 but unless we’re talking about a complete overhaul in terms of colour, contrast and brightness like what Neverar is doing with Star Wars I don’t see much of a point.

Well, Neverar’s color work is going to be the starting point for the color in 3.0, so…

Anyway, the main point of 3.0 is for 1080p. SW and ESB will also still have a good deal of GOUT left in their pre-3.0 versions that will be removed.

What do you mean about the brother and sister scene? On the bridge? I don’t really remember how that one looked, but I am curious what will a 35mm source offer that scene.

Yeah the one where Luke tells Leia she’s her sister. The scene is sourced from the blu-ray and it looks very grainy and has very poor contrast, and when I saw the ROTJ Grindhouse it had none of those issues.

Oh, so you know, huh? All right. Hello, control? Control, this is Delphar 7. CatBus’ mission is in jeopardy. Destroy the planet. Repeat – destroy the planet.

Well, yes, but not in Enumclaw. At least around here, jokes about Enumclaw and horses never get old.

Finally, here’s a comparison video of ROTJ: https://youtu.be/a60HAK0qW00?list=PLLBHkXheKF361XLqOoxXbtQNAMcdFghT8

I’ve created a new separate channel solely for the purpose of these comparisons, as I plan to upload some more of these. Feel free to make requests of which scene comparisons you’d like to see.

For SW, I would say SSE 1.6 has best colors.

For ESB, DE wins out slightly.

And DE EASILY is my favorite color grade for return of the Jedi.

I’ve just uploaded a DTS audio file for the GOUT version of Jedi with 5.1 channel 1997 Special Edition audio mix. I have edited the audio file to play in sync with this release.

To patch over certain GOUT footages where the SE audio would be inappropriate, I’ve used the film’s 1983 theatrical mix found in the 5.1 channel DTS audio stream of the Despecialized Edition. So, these audio files are 97.14% SE97 audio and 2.86% of GOUT audio.

I also made one for Harmy’s Jedi Grindhouse 35mm LPP.

Like all my other edited SE97 audio files, found on the ‘spleen, the source of the 1997 SE audio was from CapableMetal DTS files, found on the ‘spleen, where it was made from the Cinema DTS CD-ROM discs (from the collection of Jetrell Fo). The data from the discs was encrypted to 6 mono PCM wave files representing each channel of the film’s surround soundtrack. CapableMetal processed and sync’ed each of the 6 files to fit TB broadcasts of the SE97, so, the SE97 mix presented in this audio file is from CapableMetal’s work and I appreciate his effort and for his sharing, as well as, to Jetrell Fo for obtaining the discs.

This is just another way to view the GOUT version.

The reason for 2 audio files of the same film, featuring the same content, is because the difference in length of these Harmy releases. The DE 2.5 is the longest of the videos while the the Grindhouse version is a minute and a quarter shorter, despite the fact that it has been “NTSC GOUT sync’d” by way of black frames as substitutes for the missing frames of the release print. The only difference in my audio files is how I arranged the end credits music. I’ll explain.

In the GOUT version of ROTJ, John Williams’ original music for this film’s end credits was edited to fit the length of that version’s credit roll. For the film’s Special Edition, the length of the end credits was extended, so, Williams’ end credits music was almost restored–the edit in the Rebel fanfare at the start of the end credits from the GOUT version was retained in the SE97. Also, to accommodate the extra length of SE97 end credits, a portion of music for that roll was repeated—the Ewok music portion.

For the DE version of the audio file, I’ve removed that duplicate Ewok-music portion of the SE97 end credits edit. Despite the shortening, the music will still go past the official end credits and into the Despecialized credits, but the music will finish before those credits end.

For the Grindhouse version, using only the SE97 audio elements, I’ve recreated the end credits-music edit from the GOUT version.

FAQ:

What happends if I use the DE audio file for the Grindhouse?
Eventhough, the audio will play in-sync with the video, when the video reaches the end-the final video frame, the screen will go black and the timecode counter will stop, but the audio stream will continue until it reaches its end. That means you’ll hear music over Harmy’s “special-thanks” credits and when that is done, the music will continue until it finishes. *

OK, so, what happends if I mux the Grindhouse audio with the DE video?
Well, audio will play in perfect sync with the DE video. When the audio stream reaches its end (being that it’s shorter than the video), the video will play with no sound until it reaches the final frame. *

*= based on what I found when using my MPC-HC media player.

So the long and the short is that because both the DE and the Grindhouse have been sync’d together, whichever audio file you choose to download it will play in perfect sync with both videos, it is just a question of how much music from the end credits do you wish to have.

Enjoy.

Just curious, this isn’t specifically addressing Harmy’s despecialization as much as it’s a technical question regarding the image.

At Chapter 13 of ROTJ Blu-ray (more specifically starting at 38:00) the image shifts, shakes, wobbles, rubberbands significantly in my opinion…I don’t know what the actual technical term is but that’s what I’m looking for. And is this pretty much a common occurrence? I’m not sure why I’m just now starting to notice it and never did before.

Wait, you watched the Blu-rays? You only should buy them to justify viewing the fan edit. After that, burying them in a cardboard box in your back yard works pretty well.

As for shaking and several-minutes-long-out-of-focus sequences, hey, that’s what Lucas originally intended, but seventies technology didn’t allow him to shake the camera or blur the image, so he had to wait for the technology to catch up. Either that or they kinda did the Blu-rays on the cheap.

I think a 16mm mono DTS-HD Master Audio mix for ROTJ would be really great.

Puggo has one in Return of the Pug but I am not sure how to get it since I don’t have a MySpleen account.

I really want one and I am sure there are also many other fans who want to watch the entire Original Trilogy in glorious mono.

And ROTJ is the only one without a mono mix.

I think a simple MKA with the mono mix for ROTJ which can easily be muxed to the current version (2.5 as of writing) is a practical compromise since you don’t have to upload the entire MKV again with no change but a new mono mix and it can be a nice thing while we patiently wait for 3.0.

If that is not possible, I really wish that 3.0 will have the mono mix.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

The thing about that is that as far as we can tell, the 16mm ROTJ mono is just a fold-down of the stereo mix and not a distinct soundmix.

Author
Time

By 1983 the theatrical landscape had changed significantly from how things were circa 1977; stereo became the norm, where once mono was the lowest common denominator that had to be supported for widest reach. What you are hoping for really may not have officially existed as a mix unto itself, as the need for it had subsided and Lucas was very progressive, always pushing boundaries for video and audio quality (until he apparently lost his mind), never happy to be held back by artificial limitations. If you really want to watch the movie in mono, that is something you’d probably have to do on your own by just down-converting the audio and–very easily–muxing it into your mkv file; just know that if your intention is to have a theatrically accurate experience you won’t find that with mono for this film (unless you want to replicate a rundown '80s theater making do with a stereo film playing on their mono setup).

But really, it isn’t the amount of channels of audio that people are looking for with Star Wars films when talking about mono vs other mixes, it is about watching the film with subtle audio differences between the mixes. That definitely was the case with Star Wars, and I’m not sure but may have been the case with Empire (more so the early 70mm cut, if you want differences), though with Jedi there doesn’t seem to be a holy grail of slightly different released audio out there. But, if you find you’re still dead set to find mono for Jedi, then you’ll have lost the original point of wanting different mixes and be doing it for the technical difference of how many channels, rather than for the historical content.

Well, most likely.

But isn’t the 16mm TESB mono mix also just a fold-down of the stereo mix?

I think we should get the Return of the Pug 16mm mix so the entire trilogy can be in mono.

And even though stereo and/or surround is technically superior to mono, I sometimes love watching movies in mono, even if it’s a recent movie.

Anyway, what were the latest movies in mono?

I think most Filipino movies are still in mono, even to this very day, according to my Filipino friends.

Also, The Wind Rises, which was the very last film by Hayao Miyazaki, was in mono.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

The Wind Rises may be one of the very few examples of mono actually being used for an artistic purpose (and mostly done to match the time setting of the movie… even the sound effects [plane engines and all] were voiced by people), rather than due to limitations or cheapness. If you are wanting to live in a non-spatial world, no one is stopping you from learning how to down mix every stereo or surround track you come across for your own use, just don’t expect the Star Wars preservation community to rally around making and including mixes that never existed.

Just checked, I just knew by now that Return of the Pug hasn’t been released yet.

When Return of the Pug is released, I think we should add the mono sound from that version.

Just so the Original Trilogy is finally complete in mono.

One of the main reasons I want a mono mix for ROTJ is because I was weirded out by the fact that SW and TESB both have mono mixes while ROTJ doesn’t.

I think this mono mix should be included for 3.0 but maybe we can also add an optional MKA pack if we get Return of the Pug before 3.0.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Are you also weirded out by Nosferatu being available as a silent movie and Dracula Untold only being sold with sound?

It just seems like you’re not reading the responses you get. Want mono? Downmix it to mono. Bam, mono. SW and ESB have unique mixes in mono, that’s the reason they’re preserved. If you’re “weirded out”, I’m not sure you’re understanding properly.

When the mono audio comes out, you can certainly take the time to compare each line to the stereo mix. If you find anything that’s different, I’m sure the community would be thrilled to hear from you about it. As far as I know, that might be a waste of time as they’re expected to be identical in content.

I find it interesting that after all of this reasoning with this person about why this won’t and shouldn’t be a thing and that there’s no way there’d ever be any community support behind creating a mono version of ROTJ which would be based on nothing unique, it is still being expressed to us in terms that indicate the person thinks there will be some sort of groundswell of community support for the shot-to-pieces idea…

we should add the mono
maybe we can also add an optional MKA pack
maybe our best bet
