Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 125

Despite my previous comments I generally stay away from 3D. It does hurt my eyes usually and I’ve only seen a couple films in 3D where I actually enjoyed the 3D experience more than I would have just seeing it in 2D.

But I look at history and I see a pattern repeating itself with 3D.

Plus when it’s done well, I think it does add to the experience.

Return of the Jedi is pretty cool too. 😛

I don’t like nor dislike 3D, personally. However, I totally forget I’m watching 3D after about 10 minutes and I ask myself: why am I paying extra money for this??

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Well I guess 3d is like cilantro. Some love it, but to others it tastes like soap.

I don’t like it, and I really shouldn’t have a problem with others liking it, but it does affect me somewhat because the imax near my house tends to always show features in 3d, and rarely in 2d. So I almost never go anymore, and I miss the big screen and powerful sound.

This is probably the main reason I dislike 3d so much, it like a virus taking over cinema.

My thoughts exactly.

It’s ok to have it as an option, but to me it’s just a gimmic that distracts from the story.

I don’t know why, if it’s something with my eyes, but I can’t watch a 3D movie for longer than 10-15 minutes. I then have to take off the glasses and rest my eyes a bit before I can continue. It gives me just a very weird feeling, sometimes even headaches.

You can’t lay down and look at 3D sideways. 50% of the time when I watch a movie I lay down on the couch. You can’t do this with 3D. Plus it just doesn’t really add anything to the experience for me.

I’ve tried 3D several times. It makes to more obvious that what you are watching is fake. If you try to focus on another part of the image, the edges stand out in a very fake way. I saw TFA in 3D and all the models looked small and fake. Anything that was too close or too far from the camera distracted from the experience. All the midrange stuff looked great. But it wasn’t just TFA. All the trailers had the same issues. All the times I’ve viewed 3D, I’ve noticed pretty much the same thing. I’m not likely to ever pay to see a movie in 3D again or get any sort of 3D home entertainment system. It is a great novelty, but other than than offering a depth dimension to things, it just makes everything seem unreal - the opposite of what a movie experience should be. I know lots of people love it, but I hate it. I know how to put it… watching TFA in 3D was like watching it in GOUT quality at home. Watchable, but constantly distracted by artifacts that a quality viewing wouldn’t have.

I think RotJ would be much better in 3D.

Why, Wicket would look swell in 3D.

Or not.

Wait, where’d this whole 3D thing come from?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I think it started with a discussion of the benefits of 4K…

Don’t worry if you missed it. It’ll be back again in 30 years.

^This^ I sometimes like 3D in the theater, but my brain flattens the image before long, and I have to keep switching to polarized sunglasses (to make it properly 2D, in IMAX, at least) for a little while to make the effect obvious again when I put the 3D glasses back on, but it never lasts. At best, if the 3D isn’t really shitty post converted cardboard cut out looking stuff, I still kind of appreciate subtle depth throughout, like roundness of faces… but that’s about it.

I think ROTJ would benefit greatly from 3D - the space battle would be amazing - I was really disappointed when they scraped the 3D conversions.

Hey, maybe if a future release renders the despecialized editions obsolete, your next project could be doing 3D conversions 😉

Doesn’t Harmy already have his hands on scans of a red faded print? All he would need is a blue faded print. Easy!

Then if he gets a green faded print a person with 3 eyes can have 3D. Or would that be 4D?

Figured I’d quickly throw together a mock up 3D conversion of a frame from Jedi. This was done extremely quickly with a VERY basic depth map, so it’s definitely not the best representation of what could be done with more work, but it should give you an idea. Take a look if you have RED/CYAN anaglyph glasses.

Just finished burning and watching Star Wars Despecialized v2.7, and…well, I’m not trying to sound mean or nitpicky, but I had a few issues where some sound effects were drowned out. The static sound when Princess Leia’s message repeats as well as some laser fire and explosions were mute for example, and on the mono audio track I could barely hear Luke’s lightsaber during the training scene on the Falcon.

It may have been my fault when burning the BDMV copy to a disc. Is anyone else having this issue?

Well, this is the Return of the Jedi thread. But, aside from that, Harmy does not do the audio side of things (nor do I). The audio tracks actually haven’t been changed in years. So general audio questions might be better suited for hairy_hen’s thread, since these are his tracks. But the other thing is that you didn’t mention which of the many audio tracks you’re trying (aside from the note about the mono track, which I think hairy_hen has yet another thread for). Is it the first track? That’s 5.1 audio, are you using a 5.1 system? How does the second track, which is stereo, sound?

My mistake. My brain took the day off today ^^;

I kinda switched between the 5.1 and the mono track. I haven’t listened to the 2.0 stereo sound yet.

I’m not an expert on the audio at all. But, I think the mono track is even more of a reconstruction than the others. For the parts that are unique to the mono, you can hear a difference in quality, though I’m not sure if the scene you bring up has anything affected. In general, people are very happy with the 5.1 and stereo tracks, I think.

I’ve listened to the mono on version 2.5 and have heard every sound perfectly.
