Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released) — Page 46

So I got this forever ago with the 1981 “A New Hope” crawl, and recently decided I think I’d prefer the 1977 crawl.

I see on myspleen there’s some “2.6 with towne32 color corrections” but that is NOT the same as 2.7 right?

There’s torrents for 2.7 but only as blu rays which I’m not really looking for. Is the multipart rar thing the only good option at this point? I’ve alway just torrented the various updates from myspleen in the past

OR, is it possible to just extract the normal 2.7 mkv from that blu ray iso or whatever?

Yes, you can create an MKV from a Blu-ray. If you mount the ISO, you can add the big M2TS file into MakeMKV and it’ll convert it to an MKV. IIRC you lose chapter data, but video and audio should both come through.

There is an mkv release on spleen for 2.7. Look for “Harmy’s STAR WARS DE: 2.7 Remastered (MKV)”.
If you searched for “despecialized” it would not have come up in the search results.

My hero! Thanks a ton, dunno if I would have gotten around to checking without using “despecialized” somewhere in the search.

I also found one on…that other site…but it didn’t have the standard readme.tt etc so it’s nice to get something that looks SLIGHTLY less sketchy lol

Not my intention to troll, I simply misunderstood how this thing is distributed

EDIT: Sorry again guys, it was just a bad night for me and I actually really appreciate this effort, I cheered and clapped when I saw Han shoot first for the first time. This means a lot to me, so thank you for making this.

Time 2:24 to 2:26 space suddenly turned blue, is it suppose to be like that? Just thinking it was horrid to watch.
Time 16 to 17 minutes, wireframes above certain droids?

Thanks for all your hard work. It’s amazing that this thing exists! Unfortunately I have to offer some harsh criticism of some of the color correction though. Sorry!

I found v2.7 to be unwatchable on a well calibrated screen 😦 It was only certain shots, specifically any sunlit ones. The skin tones look closer to what Friedkin did to the French Connection: really overblown and artificial. It’s like they’ve tried to make everyone’s skin look tan. I get the thinking, but it’s not The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Other (indoor) shots look more natural.

This is the first Despecialized I’ve watched, so I don’t know if this was an improvement over 2.5. But couldn’t watch daylight scenes.

Still magical watching the original, though. Thanks for restoring it.

If it helps, this was geared toward the “technicolor look”, which had a heavy yellow bias (it was really like that in theatres IF you saw a tech print!). It was also IIRC working from an already-processed version of the Blu-ray that had gone through a less-than-ideal de-purpling process. Either way, the result is definitely far from perfect, but it’s still my favorite go-to version of this film.

Harmy’s already commented that future versions won’t necessarily have that hardcore technicolor look and will be more neutral/natural. The problem was (and still is) that everyone’s got their own ideas about what looks good, and technicolor prints are the only references that can definitively tell us how the film looked back in the day – but that yellowish cast comes with that particular package, and isn’t how it looked for most people who saw the film on a different kind of print (now pink and vinegary).
