The "Stereo Mono Mix" / XP Series - comments and ramblings / suggestions welcome

I'm just about to embark on my second attempt to make this edit. My plan is to release it audio-only, for obvious reasons.

1. My plan is to synchronize with the GOUT; a GOUT-synched FLAC of the 1993 mix from LD will be my main source.

2. Currently I have the following priority of source when one is usable: THX, 1985, 2.0, 1997, Spanish 2.0, French 2.0, "The Story of Star Wars" LP rip, 1.0 (am acquiring the 1997 OST, as that's easier to splice with than the 1993/1977 OST). I'm not exactly familiar with all mono changes.

At least I plan to make the following adjustments:

1. Alarms on the Tantive 4 (Spanish/French 2.0 has the klaxons from the mono mix, but what of where they overlap speech? I will try 1997 for dialogue and fall back to mono if the sirens are audible.)

2. Aunt Beru (only one "Luke, Luke!" is available in stereo and the rest I'll need to re-overlay. This is going to get ugly.)

3. "Check that side of the street. It's secure." (I think I need to overlay this one, I don't know of any stereo recordings of it)

4. "The tractor beam is coupled..." (1985 mix.)

5. "The Rebel base will be in range..." (Where possible, The Story of Star Wars. This will take a bit of a Q hit so I might pinch it into the 1993 mix very tightly.)

6. "Blast it, Wedge..." (I think this one needs an overlay too.)

Some places I might need to take sfx from dubs or the 1997 mix. No voice -> I'll be using dubs, so those parts are all but guaranteed to be accurate to the mono mix.

Anything I'm forgetting? I obviously don't want to have to rely on old, worn recordings while trying to make this sound nice and new (and yet accurate to the mono mix)...

In the scene where Ben& Luke are stopped at the Mos Eisley checkpoint, you can use the troopers voice from the 2004 DVD. The timing and the voice is exactly the same as the mono mix, whereas i'm pretty sure that on all the other mixes (LD, VHS etc) the troopers voice is timed different.

Also the original Tantive klaxon can be heard during the Death Star battle where Vader & the TIE pilots head for the ships. In the German 5.1 track the rear channels have the klaxon with no music so you could mix this (using loops) with the centre channel from the 2004 DVD and add music & ambient FX to recreate the mono mix. Takes a bit or work but it can be done.

Hm, my 2004 has only English, French, and Spanish...no German :/, but then again I have the R1s, where you probably have the R2s.

The French & german tracks are very similar and the HDTV French 5.1 has the clean Klaxon in the surround channels so its a good bet that if your DVD has the French 5.1 then you can get the audio. My R2 DVDs have only English so i had to acquire the foreign tracks from elsewhere. If you can't get it then i could always post the audio for you.

You should make a thread that consolidates all of your various projects into once place. Not saying there can't also be separate threads for each project, but you've got a lot of irons in the fire and it would be nice to see what they all are, and how they are different. This is coming from someone, though, that doesn't know a ton about the different sound mixes, other than which pieces I like.

Well, I will recycle this thread I guess for my XP projects, anyway, I guess, as theatrical accuracy is very important to me.

Not all of this will get out there publicly but I do want to make sure what I have is correct

...which one was used in ROTJ in 1983 racks my brain...

I don't know either, but the second one looks better.

I agree. I know it's what the original Star Wars used, as many screencaps have proven, but I've never seen evidence for ROTJ, so I figured I'd ask lol
