Happy Valentine's Day! — Page 6

Or maybe a drunken high kick to the balls followed by a bit of cuddling by a fireplace followed by the exchange of rings and five cigars.

The morning after would make for one hell of a GIF.

I apologize for the drunk posting.

As for the alcohol vs. cigarettes:

1.  there is no such thing as second hand drinking.   If you drink, the people around you do not become drunk as result of it and have their livers harmed.   If you smoke around others, they also inhale the smoke and it damages their lungs as well.  Not mention that your smoking can make other cough and they not like the smell, and they may not like how you and your clothes smell afterwards.

2.  I would be willing to bet that alcohol is not as damaging to the liver as smoking is to the lungs.    I believe there are a lot more people that drink and don't get liver cancer than there are people that smoke and don't get lung cancer.

3. I'm sure someone is going to ask "what about drunk driving the kills people? that doesn't happen with smoking"  true, but I do not get drunk and drive, ever.  The only times I've ever been drunk is when I am in my own home.

4. I don't think I ever called smoking a sin.  I just said it was very unhealthy to do, and also unhealthy for those around you.

that's fine.   I don't think you did say anything offensive or in anger.    I wish I could be more like you.

Come on, you two.  Cuddle and make nice.  It's free.

no offense to Gaffer, but I am not going to cuddle with him.

If you drink and act like an arse, say and do things to others you wouldn't dream of doing when sober or (heavens forbid) drive a car, the effect is much worse than second hand smoke.

Very few people live in total isolation if someone choses to wreck their own health on booze it has a detrimental effect on others.

The parallel between puffing away in front of people unable to move out of a badly ventilated environment and boozing to excess is pretty obvious.

I wouldn't advocate a blanket prohibition in either case, just common sense and good manners.

As someone who has smoked and been drunk and acted like a fool I appreciate both sides of both equations.

Recently smoking was seen as sexy and even romantic I wonder how long it will take for Champagne and booze in general to be excluded from romantic rituals like weddings and anniversaries.

Dutch courage may become a thing of the past.

apparently you never read my 3rd point where I said I never drive when drunk.

perhaps.   But I don't think I've wrecked my health yet.   I am also sure the same can be said when someone chooses to wreck their health by smoking.

yet I don't see them.  With smoking, you risk damaging the lungs of those around you. With drinking you do not damage other people's livers.

we agree here.

I think we can agree that second hand smoke is bad, and the societal effects of alcohol can be bad.

So the only defensible drug has to be Love.

My point about drunk driving stands as a general example of the sort of stupid thing people do when they have over done it on the sauce bottle (hardly any of my post are specific directed at things you do personally).

Drunks often have a negative effect on the health of people who don't or rarely drink it's often worse than the effects of passive smoking.

The mania around smoking while rooted in good intentions is as pointlessly intrusive as the more militant branches of the Temperance Movement.

Though I often find myself feeling some empathy with those sentiments.

You should give a pal hug a try Warb, some of my best cuddles have been of a non-sexual nature.

drunks? yes.   drinking itself? no.   It is what people do while drinking, especially while drunk, that is the problem, not actual act of drinking itself.  With smoking it is the actual act smoking around others that is the problem

Bingowings said:

I don't see it as intrusive or pointless, just to warn people about the dangers of smoking and to try to keep others from being harmed by second hand smoke.

what is worse?  a few dumb regrettable posts on a forum, or giving people you smoke around lung cancer?    I rest my case.

Author

One person smoking near you for a few minutes will not give you cancer.

You'd have to exposed to a lot of smoke for a long time.

One person's drunken behavior can have an adverse effect on another person for the whole of their life.

I'm a non-smoker and a drinker.

But it seems to me no one has ever smoked two packs, got crazy, and beat their wife to death.

So in general, despite my own vices, I think alcohol is the worse societal ill.

again you are talking about what people do while drunk, not the actual act of drinking.    Lots of people drink and harm no one around them.    If you are smoking around someone, you are harming them(unless that someone is wearing a gas mask or something like that).

I don't get violent when drunk, I don't drive while drunk.   I don't think I have ever had that kind of an adverse effect on someone's life.

true, but you are adding to it.    what about if you smoke around non-smoking friends or a non-smoking significant other alot?  what about non-smokers that work where people are allowed to smoke?   All three have high chance of getting lung cancer because you smoke.
