The whole idea of having a special day where men (and it is usually the guys who are the target of this nonsense) are pressured into being 'romantic' (by buying future trash) is a Corporatist plot to divorce silly people from money best spent on sensible things like putting aside for a utility bill.

It also encourages people to be dispassionate slobs for the rest of the year.

It injects tension into partnered couples, further isolates the singles and just underlines how people talk about romance, love and passion but are encouraged to express it by buying junk.

Have a nice free cuddle instead.

What?  No, he said he should have... you know what?  You just need to go back and re-read the darn thing.

Warb, what's your problem with what Bingo said?

Author

it just seems like more of Bingo's  typical self righteous pontificating spiel.    He probably hates any holiday that Americans typically celebrate.

C'mon Warb, what does Valentine's Day have to do with America?  You should know it was established by a Pope way before the USA was a country.

Which Pope?  Wait, this will be better... can someone list all of the Popes that didn't establish St. Valentines day?

I never said it was invented by America or an American.

I didn't know this either, but I assumed Warb did, given his Pope listing abilities.

just because I made a list of all the Popes, does not mean that I know what each and every one of them did as Pope.

Yeah, I don't get what you're complaining about either.  From what I was able to gather yesterday, you're not particularly fond of Valentine's Day yourself, so why are you coming down on Bingo for disparaging a holiday that, quite frankly, needs to be disparaged a bit?

its not the day I hate, its the fact that I have never had someone to celebrate the day with  is what I hate.

in your opinion.

Sorry.  I just happen to agree with Bingo that it's a commercialized, guilt-tripping mess of a holiday with little redeeming qualities in its current form.  Case in point:  those terrible, terrible jewelry commercials I mentioned yesterday.  That's all that Valentine's Day is about now:  buying love.  A free cuddle, as Bingo says, is much more meaningful.  And considering I'm not known for "self-righteous pontificating spiels," and I happen to agree with him, maybe that's not what he's going for either.

I took this statement to mean "Bingo probably hates V-day because it's an American holiday."  Which made no sense to me.

It still makes no sense to me, but whatevs.

Valentine's Day is not about buying love, its about show love.   One way you show love is buying gifts.    Just about every holiday is commercialized, especially Christmas.    Should we hate every holiday?

I was typing up a response and then I discovered this edit that said the same thing.  Warb, just admit to yourself that you jumped on Bingo because of past history (or perceived past history) and not because of what he actually said.

Anyway, none of this is in the spirit of Valentine's Day. ;-)

I know it wasn't what you were going for, but you don't have the history that he does.

perhaps.    I'm sorry I'm still pissed at him.
