Happy 5th Anniversary Phantom Menace!

How many of you can relate to this?

5 years ago today, I was at work, tired as hell from the night before. It all started at about 10pm. We arrived at the theatre with our pre-orded tickets in-hand. We stood in line. Leafing through the fancy Episode I programme we bought in the lobby. Waiting paitently, hoping to get the best seats in the house. Finally, 11:30pm. The line slowly moves towards the theatre. A few minutes later we are seated and waiting once again. 12:01am. Show time! I think we all remember that feeling!

Approximatly 2hrs later, as we exit the theatre and walk to the car, I was asked, "so, what did you think? Did you like it?" All I could say was, "I'm not sure". I remember asking myself, "was that a good movie? Sure I enjoyed it, but was it a Star Wars movie?"

So there I am. At work. My head full of emotion. Was it dissappointment? Was it just too much to take in with only one viewing? Maybe after I see it again tonight (with my pre-orded tickets) will it make more sense. Did it?

It is now 5 years later. To the day. Now Episode II has come and gone. And it is only a mere 1 year till Episode III. More dissappointment? I'm sure. Is all this really, truely Star Wars. The Star Wars we loved as kids? Maybe it is and we just don't "see it" anymore.

Anyway, I may watch the DVD tonight, or I may not. Happy 5th Menace!

I went to see it with 2 other friends who really didn't want to. One of them walked out on the middle as waited for us at a book shop nearby, he left calling the movie a "boring crap". I didn't like it too much, no matter how much I WANTED to like it. The end.

You're comparing TPM to teen movies?

Already that long is it? How time just flies by is just amazing, but then, I watched it for the first time I think only three years ago, when a freinds lent me the DVD (at least I have the satisfaction that I didn't have to pay for it...).
I hope Ep3 will be better... *crosses fingers*

Actually, I don't remember the first time I saw the Phantom Menace. The second time I saw it was Father's day 1999. All I remember is I really liked it. And that day, my mother had just told us of her decision to shut down the family business (a pizza restaraunt) and I remember that when Shmi was talking about things changing, I was thinking "yeah.. yu'aint kidding"

I watched TMP again last week.

I still can't figure out why it is so reviled.

I didn't see TPM in theatres until Christmas of '99. The first time I saw it was actually a bootlegged .avi file a friend had downloaded @ work. Such is life.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Don't get me wrong. I liked TPM. It was just dissappointing at first. I think because NOTHING could have lived up to all that hype.

The hype sickened me when TPM came out. My Star Wars interest was in a standstill at the time, and I remember seeing commercials on TV for Amidala costumes and Maul's double-bladed lightsaber. I recall that that lightsaber was supposed to be cool, but I thought, 'big deal.' It wasn't until August of September of 1999 that I saw the movie, and the only reaction I recall having is being enamored with Natalie Portman. I was fourteen at the time, and most of the reason I was so neutral regarding the film was that it didn't feature Luke and Han and Leia (most of all Luke--he's always the one I've identified with, and not having him there made me feel lost). I think I liked Jar-Jar at the time, until everyone else started hating him. It's only been in the past year or so that I've stopped giving a damn what others think about the Gungan.

Yesterday I was watching an interview with George Lucas on a tv show called "the directors", and he was talking about his early works with Coppola, and he said that while he enjoyed working on editing and post-production, he didn't like two things: script writting, and working with actors.

That's his plan after episode 3.

except for the fact that he will always have star wars to tinker with...

If he doesnt like it, why the hell is he doing it? What a moron. That makes NO sense whatsoever! If George would just tell the stories, have a professional write them and another professional direct them, maybe we might have something better.

If he did that, maybe the PT's would be a better movie.

But now that it was mentioned, what do you guys think GL is going to do after episode 3? Retire? Do a low budget movie (nah, he hate actors)? Work on a CGI version of Indiana Jones 4?

Im thinkin he's always gonna tinker with Star Wars...
till the day he dies he will never stop improving it...
i mean its a logical way to get money as well... just bring out the trilogy again... maybe this time with i dunno... something new in it... throw it in some fancy packaging and you know people will buy it...
