you know i was thinking today, this is a starwars site with hundreds of SW fans on it, WHY DOES NO ONE WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE EU, all i see nowadays in the same all arguements and same old shit about the movies, expand your SW universe people get out there and start reading. there are lots of books out there that are jsut fantastic, the thrawn trilogy, the han solo books and the New Jedi Order. you know the only reason i really became a big SW fan was cause of the New Jedi order, and i still like those books more then some of the movies. they encompase an entire war that makes the rebellion look like a walk in the park. the NJO is what the clone wars should have been.

dude i was mad anout eu befor i knew it was called eu. its just when lucas began contradicting it in the prequels that i got turned off.

the last books i read were the first yuhzan vong book and darth maul shadow hunter, and they were both better than the lame ass prequels!

i just dont care much about star wars anymore, espescially now since the movies are over with and that they sucked hairy monkey balls, which proved lucas isnt a great story teller, but in fact, an incredibly lame one! the emperor has no clothes type of thing

I used to be somewhat into the EU, but it was when Lucas said that it doesn't exist to him when he wrote the prequels. After that, I was like...why bother? I don't want to spend time and money reading stuff that doesn't have any relevance to the films. If he just told the people who run the EU to avoid the prequel period until he was done with the movies, then there wouldn't be this continuity or canon issues and everyone would be happy. Sure there are small problems, but I can live with those....no fictional universe is perfect.

Lucas saying that was the kiss of death for the EU with me. Wouldn't bother at all even if I did like the PT. The only SW stuff I continue to get is the video games and they aren't entirely EU. I love my Star Wars games.....at least when they properly finish them.

Lucas never said he didn't consider the EU part of the story, he said he didn't consider it part of his story, of the specific story he was trying to tell. I mean, he never completely ignored it, he inserted the Outrider and the speeder bike from Shadows of the Empire into the SE of ANH, he put Aayla Secura into AOTC and ROTS, he got the name Coruscant from Heir to the Empire, he also took the name Kashyyyk from the books. I don't think that he ignores it, he just isn't comfortable saying that someone elses writing is part of his story. I mean, he even wrote the story for the holiday special, and wrote the story for and executive produced the Ewok movies.

I really really like the EU. It makes it the majority of the SW story. It takes the SW universe to new and exciting places. And it is typically written by very talented authors (Timpthy Zahn, Matthew Stover) who know exactly what they're talking about. I see no reason to avoid the EU. It basically keeps continuity both with the films and within itself. There are sme good books coming up soon. We've already had Dark Lord Rise of Darty Vader. In January, Outbound Flight will be out that will tell the mysteries of the Outbound Flight Project, which was introduced in the Thrawn Books. In 2007, Steve Perry is co-writing a novel on the early days of the death star, we've got the live-action and animated series. Basically, the EU is what will keep SW alive. To me, the films are only a small piece of the overall story.

Actually he said in an interview that he considers EU canon.
Especially the part about Boba Fett escaping teh sSarlacc pit an dthat he planned on putting a scene of him escaping into teh Special Edition
Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?
Author
Time
Yeah, they are considered canon. Lucasfilm even has an entire system of organization devoted to keeping continuity. Ask Nathan Butler. He knows everything about it.

How are they considered canon, Did Lucas ever mention it
"Yub Knub" by Warrick Davis
Author
Time
Yes, as I said above, he has incorporated multiple aspects of the EU into his movies, and has explained in interviews that, although he himself doesn't read it, he reallizes that their are many stories to be told, and his company hires talented people to tell those stories.
Author
Time
he was involved with the authors originally, its just a franchise now

But they do consider it canon. That's the point. Leland Chee (aka Tasty Taste for all you SW.com users) keeps the Holocron continuity database of all EU works. Its purpose is for Lucas and any authors who are writing a new book to look at to make sure that they keep everything in continuity.
Author

Then they didn't have such a system. Authors merely wrote what they wanted. Nowadays, all of that material, if it doesn't fit, is somehow retconned, or, if it is unsalvagable, is completely thrown out. Though they usually don't throw completely things out, due to an author's hard work. For instance, they're even attemptuing to keep some of that weird Marvel Comics stuff from the 80's in continuity. And.. since it doesn't contradict anything, they have even kept the holiday special in continuity! Yay!

I thought the 80s Marvel Comics were cool and loved them as a kid and some of the stories were not that bad and actually quite good.

Those and Splinter are the only "EU" if it they could and would be classified as such, I have ever read, I have never been bothered at all, with all the other stuff really, it seemed to me I would rather want to use my imagination if I wanted to, rather than read a story which I felt wasnt fully endorsed by Lucas.

Read Shadows of the Empire, then. He has went on record saying that he liked it so much that, had he had the story in the 80's, would have likely made a film version. As I said on up the page, he even had Dash Rendar's ship, the Outrider and a speeder bike from SOTE inserted into the ANH SE.

And now, the expanded universe drinking game!

TAKE A SIP IF...

*Characters from the movies don't act like themselves
*Luke makes a stupid decision
*Luke ignites his lightsaber with a snap-hiss
*Luke stretches out to the Force
*Luke lifts R2-D2 not knowing about the latter's leg rockets
*Wedge Antilles suits actions to words
*Stars burst into starlines
*An incompetent Imperial commander makes a critical blunder
*Kevin J. Anderson assrapes a character or plotline
*The rebels win a battle they never would be able to win
*Somebody says "I got a bad feeling about this"
*Han Solo thinks or says anything bad about C3P0
*There is no reference to the Clone Wars
*Han has a nostalgic memory
*Leia mentions remembering her mother
*Lando flirts
*Mara has a flashback to her time as the Emperor's Hand
*A large dangerous imperial taskforce capable of endangering the galaxy is less than 5 ships. (Such as 4 obsolete ISD's from the maw)
*The New Republic Defense Force, instead of sending a huge fleet with enough firepower to crack open a planet, sends a 'taskforce' that it has to scrape the bottom of the barrel to put together.
*The Empire which said NRDF is supposed to have eliminated by now as a serious contender for title of 'Ruler of the Galaxy' makes a play for Galactic domination....somehow....again.
*The New Republic faces an Extra-Galactic invasion and instead of responding, simply cuts off all news of the event and pretends it isn't happening, until the enemy fleet reaches the expansion region. And THEN it starts debating a POLITICAL response.

TAKE A DRINK IF...

*Wedge gets sent on an Intelligence mission
*Someone says something dryly
*Luke portrays abilities never seen before
*An insanely powerful Jedi threatens the galaxy
*The Evil Overlord has spent lots of time on finding the one thing that will make Luke's abilities with the Force useless in solving the Galaxy-threatening plot.
*Stormtroopers are revered as a horribly elite group of shock troops...then taken down with absurd ease by a bunch of flyboys.
*A bunch of insects on a couple of planets somehow become a deadly threat to the Galaxy...and the NR can't get any heavy ships to deal with the threat for WEEKS.
*Take a second gulp if the book introduces some uber wanked out Sith with powers completely foreign to any Sith before.
*Take a third gulp if said Sith is easily able to fight Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade Skywalker, the two most senior Jedi with decades of HTH combat experience against the 'outside the force' Vong, as well as absurd amounts of expereince against Dark Jedi, Sith and other general 'bad guys', to a standstill. Easily.

CHUG YOUR WHOLE DRINK DOWN IF...

*Grand Admiral Thrawn makes a gigantic leap of logic
*Grand Admiral Thrawn makes a mistake
*Tim Zahn completely retcons several books worth of lame, stupid plotlines in a masterfully-weaved tapestry of logic
*A Rebel Officer defects or is charged with Treason
*Borsk Feyla does not appear as a evil moron
*The Empire does not have a genius in command or a secret superweapon
*Somebody mentions a Dark Jedi Rebellion
*A major fleet battle involves less than a dozen capital ships.
*The New Republic responds to a military situation in a competent and rapid way that shows it is worthy to govern the Galaxy.
*The Empire is portrayed as a clearly benign and beneficial influence on a planet or region of space compared to the mess the OR made of it.

Amusing list Skyman, though a tad out of context.

The only reason I haven't really discussed the EU, is that I'm currently reading other books. I'm on Balance Point in the NJO(which I started when it did). My personal favorites are the works of Zahn and Stackpole.

Currently I'm reading the Moble Suit Gundam novel trilogy. Before that, it was Disney War(which certain events key to it having changed, it kind of pushed me out of it). Then, who knows.

I do consider them in my own canon. At least, the stuff I still remember. I've been reading them since I was 9. So some's a bit foggy.

quote yeah its been pretty good so far, both books started out dry but really picked up at the ends, what do you think is going to happen.
I heard a rumor somewhere that jacen starts to follow the same path anakin did, anakin skywalker.

and yeah i am really looking forward to that too, its been refered to so much its going to be cool seeing how it all fits in. you know one thing that i think the EU should do is start incoperating vergere's character from the NJO into the PT so that we can see where exactly all her beleifs come from, shes refered to in rogue planet but thats about it. it would be really cool to compare her and see how her character changed.

I'm taking a break from SW right now and reading Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe Series.

I think that book will be cool. It's supposed to be set between TPM and AOTC and involve (somewhat) Obi-Wan and Anakin. And since Timothy Zahn is writing, it should be excellent as most of his books are.
