HELP!!! No audio in VirtualDub

HELP!!! I'm getting no audio in VirtualDub. Everything is setup correctly, but the program isn't recognizing any sound. I'm totally at a loss. Also, I keep loading in filters, but they don't show up in the preview window.

How do you guys capture VHS video through virtual dub? I can get the video, but it's always interlaced and no audio, no matter what I try.

(Yes, I've been to www.videohelp.com. No help there either.)

I've never been successful at capturing in VirtualDub, but are you saying the captured file, itself, doesn't have the audio?

Also, why wouldn't your video be interlaced? Your source certainly is. You have to deinterlace it afterwards.

Yeah, I was trying to deinterlace it with a filter, but none of the filters seem to be working. I found that if I use the WDM driver I can get audio, but it's only at 11k even when I try to change it.

What program do you use to capture? I was using Chris-TV before this, but I wasn't too pleased with the results even though it has easy deinterlacing filters. It's an old tape from 1989, and I want to be able to get the best capture I can.

Unless you have a really sweet machine (and even then, it's not recommended), you shouldn't be deinterlacing in real-time. The only advice I can give on the audio is to check the "volume meter" under VDub audio options and make sure the VUmeter is showing something during your preview. Sometimes, I've accidentally had the mixer control set to the dedicated mic-in instead of analog-in. Also, if you have the kind of capture card that has an audio input (some of them are only mono, actually), you might try just going directly into the soundcard instead.

"What program do you use to capture?"

I ended up using the capture program with the stand-alone MainConcept encoder, because it gave me the most consistent captures with no dropped frames (crucial for good IVTC.) Sony Vegas works great with my Fire wire camcorder (and keeps audio and video in sync), but it apparently doesn't like my third-party videocard drivers. Otherwise, I would use it for every thing.

As for running filters during capture - don't. You want your CPU focusing getting all that video in the best form possible. Save your editing/filtering for the resulting capture, when you can test without making anything permanent. The only filter I've run is the cropping filter, which actually cuts down the amount of video the program must capture, so that's a good thing.

I get fewer dropped frames capping with VirtualVCR.
If you want the best quality, then don't de-interlace. It will introduce ghosting in fast-moving scenes.
As for the sound, I find sometimes Virtualdub mutes my soundcard for no apparent reason. I have to load up the mixer and un-mute the line 2-in.

VirtualVCR or iuVCR for capturing - assuming you are on Win 2000 or XP, i.e. are using WDM drivers. If you're still using Win 98 VfW drivers then you should probably use VirtualDub or AVIO for capture.
