"said: will not play MKVs muxed with the new mkvmerge, which has lately become a hassle, as such a file crashes the whole player"

I would stronly recommend the WDTV. Regarding, the MKV files which don't wrk on your frinds WDTV system - Look for a program called MKVFixer or MKVFix along with mkWDclean - they are only two small files and will allow your friend to 'FIX' all of the MKV's which seem unable to play on this system.

You're right about WD not supporting their system after new ones come out but, there is still support for it through user groups out there. I bought a secondhand WDTV system (Version.1) and within a fortnight had it hooked up to my backup collection of movies I copied onto a 2TB hard drive was able to put a CFW (very easy to do) on it and can now view moviesheets on it as well and it really does look very sleek.

I've managed to backup my collection of movies before storing them in the attic (about 500 or) and I still have over 1.3GB of space free on the drive. I got the system for £60 (you can get it new for about that price now). A very good investment indeed. Just do a search for WDLXTV on youtube to see what potential this wee box actually has.

If I was going to upgrade I'd be checking out the WDTV Live version so you might want to check that out as well...
