Critics be damned, I went ahead and sync'd the mono from the earlier Blu-ray to the new 35th disc. It appears to be a perfect match...no delays or re-syncing needed.
I'm still interested in a LPCM preservation of the Criterion LD. It still sounds better, but this will do!

...it seems that I'm forced not only to color regrading the movie, but also to capture and sync the laserdisc PCM audio... OK, if I'm forced to... (^^,)

I doubt a simple regrading will do it. If you look at this shot:
That's not just a color timing difference; those trees on the right have had the green leaves digitally changed to bright orange.

Hey man, piece of cake. This is the shot adjusted ie new remastered transfer with proper Adam Adams, THX, Cundey approved, 1999 color timing.

Of course this is an exact replica so the timing is a bit white hot and you loose the clouds in the sky. But just to show you with minimal adjustment, you can blend both together, just like one should for Mad Max 2 ugly colors on Blu.

That looks more like the old Bluray than the THX DVD. The trees in your shot are still green, albeit a more orangey green, but definitely not bright radioactive orange like in the THX.
Personally I can't stand the THX DVD's digitally tweaked look. I'm just making the point that there was more than simple color regrading that went into making it look that way.

The DVD colors are bound to offer less general colors, and less details (ie variations in colors) because of the narrower gamut range. I think it maybe that with the precedent Blu-ray, they tried to reproduce (but failed) the THX DVD colors.
A also think the source is the exact same IP and not a negative.

The problem with the tweaked shot is the sky is now completely blown out. No clouds are visible.
To re-create the 99 color timing one would have to be insanely careful and have damn fine color grading skills. There is almost no data to work with when dealing with 4:2:0 compressed imagery.

clouds are back, trees are more orange but still not like the DVD...

I can testify to the new BD being more in line with the theatrical and early home releases of the film, but I love the '99 color timing. I remember the first time I watched the '99 version (around 2000/2001) and was I just blown away. It really gives the film the feeling of fall in the mid-west (except that it's still clearly California) and the night scenes really feel creepier.

I don't think there was any magic involved, this fella over at horrordvds: http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/showthread.php?t=44865&page=17
managed to approximate the look by simply adjust the yellow color channel.
As you can see, it can easily be accomplished without isolating specific sections of the original image if that's the look you want.

This result is excellent, but I don't think a single adjustment will be right for the whole movie; more tests should be done on different shots to prove if that technique will work.

Yes, you can obviously forget one single adjustment for the whole film. The point was, there's no isolated manipulation of the image in the THX release to get those colors which some people seems to think.

Well it just wouldn't be a BluRay if the blues in the picture weren't cranked way up (in the daytime scenes) =) Look at the interior car shot, the reds of the car are way too purple.
Though a simple switch to the "warm" setting on ones TV might be enough to fix it.

I like your version pussy cat. Mine was just quickly made to show you could approximate that look. I didn't mean to do it on the whole movie, just to support anyone who will.
It's true the new version ruins the use of shadows in the film, which the 99 DVD gets right.

If someone here has the THX dvd, could they rip the ac3 5.1 track? I would but i can't find my copy. Always thought that sounded pretty darn good compared to all the dvds released after. i'll keep looking for my copy but who knows where it is. Thanks guys

I have it already ripped, I'll extract the ac3, but which version do you want? There is the 5.1 remix, a dolby surround remix, and the mono.

I'd love to, but I don't have any capturing gear. If anyone can point me to Mac compatible hardware/software to do this, I'll consider buying it.
That being said I have a rip of the mono track from the first Blu-ray if anyone wants that. Is it the same as the 1999 DVD?
