Why isn't there a standalone BD player that can play 3D discs back in 2d? Would solve a lot of problems.
Yeah it sure would. Instead I'll have to see if I can rip it, talk about a pain in the neck.

I just finished a full viewing of the 2D blu-ray. The tint isn't really noticeable at all.
I think the more naturalistic color timing in the 3D version has something to do with making for a more comfortable stereoscopic experience.
The fact that there are differences like that lens flare is a pretty clear sign that we're dealing with two distinct cuts of the film.
As such, I would imagine the 2D color timing is exactly how Gunn wanted the final film and isn't a mistake.
The green tint isn't horrendous I agree but it is there. However as I've previously posted, the darkness of the 2D image that is a real problem too.
Okay here we go (I've captured mostly stuff I've shown earlier in the thread)...
^ Yep the green tint is gone and zero in on Rocket's right-eye (His right) to see the under exposure.
^ The Underexposure is dramaticlly obvious in this shot. Also the wierdly crushed teal shadows are much less bad. They are still a little odd in the bottom right corner though.
^ Granted this is supposed to be a dark shot but on the 3D capture the detail runs right into the darkest shadows (It's all gone in the dark 2D transfer). Also yay iMAX!
^ Lastly, the dark image is interfering with the story IMO. I can barely make out the emotion on Rocket's face. However the 3D transfer frequently has a black bar down the left hand side in the non-iMAX shots.
FYI: Click images ^ to see in full HD. I ripped both with DVDFab and captured a shots with VLC. Also these might not be the exact same frame but I tried.

Thanks for that. Money is tight for me right now and there is no way I would be happy with paying full price for that. I notice those type of details and they bug me to death, it's one of the reasons I can't stand colour versions of black and white movies, thanks again. It's too bad Disney screwed this up so badly.
This thread is interesting in that the Godzilla message board I frequent just went through this SAME experience of the Godzilla (2014) 2d vs 3d bluray differences with people being very upset that the 2d version was noticeably darker.
But what a lot of people don't seem to realize is that 3d copies are almost ALWAYS a bit brighter in order to compensate for the fact that 3d glasses have a slight tint to them. You can't compare a raw 3d screenshot to a 2d screenshot. To make the comparison fair, you'd need to send the 3d shot through a filter equivalent to viewing it through the 3d glasses. And I'd be willing to bet that if you do that, they will look awfully similar.

Interesting. I can accept this might account for differing 'brightness' levels, but the whole 'greenish' tint thing is a completely different issue. Drives me nuts when I see something re-coloured for the worse - It's happened with major movies by George Lucas, Ridley Scott, and Peter Jackson especially. And now Peter Gunn it seems.
And thanks for those additional screengrabs of your's Ryan. They show a noticeable difference.

All I can say is, I saw GOTG several times at the cinema in 2D and 3D and as soon as I played the 2DBR I knew it wasn't right (As I said much earlier in the thread). The 3D rip I've just done looks more like the film I saw (It still doesn't look as good as I remember though). Everyone else can make up their own minds.

Yeah I only saw it in 2D and the angle of the shots is different on the Bluray and the skin of the actors did not have that stupid greenish tint and it didn't look like everyone was standing in front of a pitch black background. There is no way I am paying $25 for that.

Yes, yes, to canofhumdingers you listen!
Okay, have we actually confirmed that Guardians didn't have a slight greenish tint in 2d theaters? I saw in theaters, but our eyes adjust to blanket tints really quickly, and it's entirely likely that it had this slight bit of greenness which was removed for the 3d showing as part of the brightening they did.
It would be really strange of them to introduce it on the bluray for no reason. I'm guessing it was always there and we didn't notice.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture DE - The Anti-DNR Fanedit
Duel (1971) - The Hybrid Cut
The Phantom of the Opera - 1925 Version Reconstruction - Rare Scores Collection - Roy Budd Score
Believe me when I watch movies I watch them, I am a cinema snob and I pay attention to details like that and complain to the theater if the picture is slightly out of focus. When I pay $12 to see something once it had better not be out of focus or make all the characters look like Mr.Spock.
It's still playing in 2D at my local bargain cinema, but I don't think they would appreciate my taking screenshots with my phone. ;)

I'm sure if you specified it was for research they wouldn't mind.

One of the deleted scenes features the blue-guard dancing to...
...so I guess that is one extra song that Peter has on his cassette.

I have now seen both the DvD and Bluray release of this movie and to my eye they seemed to be using different prints of the film. The Bluray version doesn't look too bad, in fact it looks better then the DvD for brightly lit scenes, but in dark scenes the DvD version looks better. Also at some points you really can tell the Bluray picture is at a slight angle and there are a few scenes where things take on a greenish tint and that doesn't happen with the DvD. As for which version you should buy I guess it depends on what is important to you because the Bluray doesn't look bad but for someone who is OCD about the look of movies these little details nag at me, I have no idea if the casual viewer will even notice the difference.
Phew, now that the boards are back up I can finally spill all of this out.
Man! So first of all, James Gunn was on a movie podcast I listened to frequently. It was a fantastic interview where Gunn revealed a lot of great stuff about alternate versions and cut scenes.
Turns out James Gunn and myself run on pretty much the same wave length. All of his ideas for what he wanted to do with a space opera were the same as mine. I also had no idea they hired Chris Foss to design their ships! I thought they looked heavily influenced by his work but they actually got the man himself!
So anyway, that podcast got me all fired up to watch all of the making of stuff on the blu-ray. WHAT A TEASE THAT STUFF IS. Gunn talks about some awesome cut stuff in that podcast but none of it is included in the deleted scenes or seen anywhere in the bonus features. There's so much material they held back and I WANT IT NOW!
I am very ashamed to admit that it took me this long to watch it, but I finally rented the blu ray and watched it for the first time. I just couldn't believe how awesome it was. It's incredible.
In my defense, movie theaters give me panic attacks. I have a big screen TV that, in ratio to the size of my wall tricks your perspective and gives an experience as close to being in a theater without one, except I get to sit on a couch and smoke weed and drink beer so it never bothers me too much.
I watched it again the other day. Still liked it, but I still don't get the hype.
It's just a fun movie, the way Star Wars used to be. No more, no less.

This is a pretty good defense.
Just letting you guys know that I recently created an IMAX version of Guardians of the Galaxy that has the changing left sidebar cropped on a shot by shot basis and also the brightness has been reduced slightly to take into account the boosted brightness of the 3D release to compensate for the 3D glasses. Those interested can find it on tehparadox.
Anybody interested in this release being put up on myspleen?

How did you deal with the randomly shifting vertical aspect that that would create?
