Gripes and B#tches for Office Workers

Ric suggested this yesterday. Here's one of my favorites:

Orwellian multi-cultural events, kind of like *insert group name here* heritage month. God help you if you don't attend. Usually about 5 minutes after it's over your boss asks why you haven't met your latest deadline.

Yeah, apparently this is 'Black History Month' and I have received numerous e-mail bulletins from the powers that be (I work for the government, so it's 10 times worse than any other office).
Surely a better way to create equality would be to accept that the achievements and plights of black people are part of world history, rather than singling it out as some kind of parralell black universe. We should be celebrating human history regardless of colour. The cracks between the races need to be bought together, not seperated further. And when the hell is white history month? Oh, wait, that would be racist...

Anyway, I've just realised that my post would be better suited to the politics thread, so here's another - I cannot bare the mundane coversations that go on in my office. I am talking seriously trivial, highly uniteresting stuff. I want to scream 'Jesus people, would you wake up and get a life because you're breathing but you sure aint alive!!' I jaut can't get my head round the fact that these boring, grey zombies were once giggling children with dreams of being an astronaut or rock star or explorer. What the hell happened? And worse still, will it happen to me? Has it already begun?

Gladly we don't have any of those ethinic things here, mostly because racism and intolerance is pretty much non-existant here.

YIYF, I know what you mean. I have to listen to mundane stories and work gossips every single day. If there's anything I despise is people talking behind each other or passing those crude office gossip, stuff like "oh looks like that guy is banging that chick from that department", or "have you heard, that guy was fired because he said this to that other person", damn it I hate those little political games inside companies, people trying to get ahead of each other, bosses stabbing their workers on the back...

Yeah, I'm also talking about when people discuss, in depth, the weather, what they had for dinner last night.

Well I do tend to start stupid conversations with banal things, not the weather, but other things... So I can't say anything about that.

I believe the argument of the other side is that white history is the other 11 months. They would argue that in regular history classes, black history is ignored. So the only it is black is covered is to have seperate course or Black history month. I'm not sure I agree, but that is what they would argue.

I have no idea what the office Christmas party is going to be like... probably everyone else getting completely s$@tfaced while my wife and I stand there and shake our heads.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Yeah man, office christmas parties....Shit, what crap. And not just office parties. I used to work for a large digital effects company and even though their party was a large, lavish affair, deep down it was still the same old shit.

Do you guys have that tradition of having an office xmas party in which you pick up someone without him or her knowing and you gotta give that person a small gift, usually a CD or DVD, and people have to guess who did you pick before you give it to him or her? We have that here, I hate that!

This is probably a topic to file under politics. But my two cents is that nobody should be coerced into treating any month as being more or less special for any reason, and agree or not, these "multicultural" events are being RAMMED down our throats.

But don't they go "Ohh, why don't you want to participate! Come one! It will be fun!", and do some peer pressure so you just give up and go?

Hmmm...not in my current circumstance, but it has happened in the past. I worked for a MAJOR corporation until 2003, and it was easy to get lost. There were over 900 people in my department. In a prior position to that one, yes there was much pressure, and that was a FAMILY owned (not my family) business.

However, there are other types of pressure where I'm at now, mostly stuff like donating to charities and stuff. Don't get me wrong, I think donating is a good thing, but it should never be pushed on you through subtle, veiled threats. And that was nothing short of what I definitely, and others allegedly got. Stuff like "If you want to be a team player you'll donate part of your pay to this organization...even if you don't like them".

we have that I my work place, but we don't have the guessiing part. And we have a rule that says the gift can't cost more that $20.

I agree, but nobody's history should be ignored because of racism either. Perhaps just covering all sides equally would be better.

That "surprise"gift exchange thing is some sort of a tradition here. On highschools kids usually do this on the last day of school (school year ends in december here), in offices, and within a family xmas celebration (thankfully mine stop doing this). For highschools and offices it's usually a CD or a DVD, never costing more than $15 or $20... The thing I hate is when I pick up someone I don't fully know, and I have to make this little humorous speech before everyone so they can guess who is it, and even being an amateur stand up comediant it's hard to come up material when you JUST DONT CARE!

For my leaving present (back when I worked in an office) I got a dog toy, a string of plastic sausages.

I don't have and never had a dog and I'm a vegetarian (I'm pretty sure they were plastic meat sausages and not plastic meat analogue sausages).
