Making Greedo shoot first and miss does not make him a pathetic flub. Yes, it definitely makes him look like a moron for missing such a close target...

But that's not the reason why it was put in the film.

If Han shoots first, as in the original edition, he is a cold blooded killer. Un-provoked, un-apologetic, KILLER.
But making Greedo shoot first means we can say Han shot him in self-defense. Politically Correct. Watered down.

It's unfortunate that Greedo missed such an easy shot, but it's more unfortunate that he was even given the chance.

It makes Han less of the old-west-gunfighter character George was aiming for.

Yeah, a guy pointing a gun at you isn't looking to play fair, so whatever advantage you can get it is definitely justifiable. I never got why Han shooting Greedo was a big deal. Han didn't do anything wrong. He just wasn't stupid enough to let Greedo shoot him...

Correct. There is nothing wrong with Han's actions in the Original.

Unless you are looking at it through George Lucas's convoluted idea of Political Correctness.
Don't get me wrong, Lucas is a genius. But he is insane. Absolutely bonkers, off the wall, INSANE.

At least Lucas didn't change Greedo's gun to a flashlight. So he didn't go as far on the political correctness as some other filmaker I can think of...

In the original version and even in the rough cut of this scene, Han always shot first in order to defend himself from being killed right then and there. Greedo clearly tells Han that he's about to do it.

Rough cut dialogue -

Greedo: Jabba would rather have your ship.

Han: Over my dead body.

Greedo: (laughs) That is the idea, Solo. Now come outside with me... or must I finish it here?

Han: I don't think they'd like another killing in here.

Greedo: They'd hardly notice. Get up! ("I've been looking forward to this fior a long time" is not heard, but there is enough silence for this to have been added later.)

Han: Yes. I bet you have.

BANG!


Original Theatrical Version dialogue -

Greedo: You can tell Jabba. He may only take your ship.

Han: Over my dead body.

Greedo: That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.

Han: Yes. I bet you have.

I think that the whole point of the scence was that Han was the kind of slef-serving person who would shoot first and ask questions later. At the end of the movie, he overcomes that. I believe that its called character development, but its been so long since I'ce seen any in a movie, I'm not sure.

Agreed. I’m getting so tired of people saying that Han killed in cold blood. Do they even know what that means?

Greedo was armed, and had Han at gunpoint!

Yeah, I'm tired of the so-called cold-blooded killing too. And, like someone pointed out long ago, Yoda chopped off two clone trooper heads in ROTS before they attempted to fire on him, so I wonder why George isn't dealing with that?

In today's P.C. world, having a gun pointed at you is still not justifiable as self defense. The law, yes, it is. But people will still criticise you and tell you that you did the wrong thing to shoot first. I'm not talking about the real right and wrong, the real cold blood - I'm talking about stupid P.C. rules and George Lucas's pandering to these guidelines to make his children happy. After all, he is the person responsible fore creating C-3PO and Jar-Jar Binks, the two worst characters in the history of Science Fiction.

From crazy women's rights activists claiming that men are the enemy, to MomsAgainstEverythingSinful pushing for cencorship in every piece of media that we see - this scene is just an example that George Lucas does not have any 8@lls.

But this whole topic is out of hand anyway and should probably just be deleted or locked. Too much gnashing of teeth and not enough good-old-fashioned Star Wars fun. Sorry for making a big deal out of this.
