Greedo in theaters

Okay, a good friend of mine who is also a Star Wars fan says that Greedo was not in Episode 4 when it was shown in theaters, and then was added later when the OT VHS and LD came out.

Neither of us were alive back in 1979, so neither of us really know for sure. But he says he read it in some book...

We've been arguing about this, because I can't picture a Star Wars without Greedo and I'm sure I would have read or heard something about this, being a member of OT.com.

So, basically, can anyone who actually saw the movie in theaters comfirm for me whether or not Greedo was in the movie way back when it was in theaters?

Greedo was always in the film. I've never once heard otherwise. Your friend might have confused it with the Jabba scene. That was cut for redundancy and technical issues.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

Thanks! I figured he might be talking about the Jabba scene, which I think should have stayed cut because it just doesn't make sense to me...

But anyways, thanks again. Now I can show him this topic and the argument will be settled.

For the record, Greedo has been in the film ever since the black-and-white "lost cut". It's on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM.

Well, the Greedo scene is actually a replacement for the Jabba scene, which (as we all know) was filmed and abandoned at the time because the stop motion creature they wanted to insert just looked stupid/didn't work (not that anything of that has changed since back then). When it was later reinserted, the Greedo scene just stayed in there as well - hence you get the same informations twice in the film.

I think that may be what your friend was trying to get at.

From what I had heard, they actually expanded the Greedo scene in terms of dialogue when the Jabba scene wound up on the cutting room floor. They added in bits that were part of the Jabba scene so that everything was clearly explained.

I know that they added in bits of dialouge from the Jabba scene. Like the "even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?" line. But that was always there, even in theaters, right? They didn't expand the scene when it was released on VHS and LD, they did that way back before it was even in theaters.

Definitely not. And there’s an original ’77 bootleg (with the original mono audio) to prove it.
