Grand Prix - a transfer from laserdsic to DVD (Released)

I’ve never actually watched the old John Frankenheimer movie Grand Prix, but I transferred it to DVD for a friend.

It’s a classic about Formula 1 racing, starring James Garner, with Eva Marie Saint, Toshiro Mifune etc. Montages by Saul Bass.

Not out on DVD yet - should be on DVD soon though. Friend wanted me to make a copy of his laserdisc … which wound up being 30i nonanamorphic widescreen because I wanted to do it quick and thus couldn’t do any better with the pulldown.

Thought I’d throw this out there. Should be on REAL DVD later this year, but anyone needs this, tygerbug at yahoo.com is the address.

I love this movie. I saw it in CINERAMA back when I was a kid. The scene where the camera is inches off of the ground going 150mph then it gently lifts up into the sky looking down on the track. Makes your stomache all queasy, it was great. The best you can do nowadays is find some one with a HD Projector and 100 inch screen and you might see it in 1/100 th scale. It will be out on DVD real soon. Turner and Warner has it on the list for later this year.

Mitch, from what I've read the 35mm prints were mono, and the 70mm were 6-track, so a 5.1 remix wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Warner has a very good track record with their classic releases, so I'm optimistic the Oscar-winning sound will be done right.

Suntech, I hate you for the simple fact that you've seen this movie on a big screen. Because it was Cinerama, from Hell's heart I stab at thee. Hmm, I might have to arrange my own big-screen showing some morning...

"from Hell's heart I stab at thee"

LOL...I love that reference.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

KHAN!!!

Well maybe if we all wrote Paul Allen and Warner Brothers and ask them to do a special screening to promote the release of the special 2 disk DVD, we could all meet at the CINERAMA in Seattle to experience it on the only remaining Super Cinerama Theatre in the world

I believe Grand Prix was shot in Ultra Panavison which was a 65mm print. I think the prints were blown up to 70MM. Ultra Panavision started out as MGM Camera 65 then in 1962 Panavision got the full rights and renamed it .

This one will arrive from Warners in a 2-disc SE on July 11th.

It'd be better if it came out a couple of weeks earlier, so that it could actually be on sale *before* the USGP, but I ain't complaining.

Anybody pick this up today? If so how is it. I didn't see the dvd at Wal Mart today or at BlockBusters so I will have to check BustBuy and CC.

UPS has my copy; it should be waiting for me when I get home from work tomorrow. Trial membership to Amazon Prime = free 2-day shipping = woo-hoo! The missus is vacationing with her mom and sister for a few days, so tomorrow night will be an evening of glorious mechanical symphony, played nice and loud.
