If nobody's going through with a new transfer, I have a DVD of it with soem music videos and other trivia as bonus features. The transfer itself is pretty spiffy. I'd be willing to PiF it to a few people in a couple weeks.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

No, it was just a single part of the film to replace Andy's damaged disc. No word yet on this project.

I will take you up on that soon. This is going to be my major holiday project. I'm off the last two weeks of the year. I have the laserdisc (although I'll have to capture the sound analog-I dropped my LD player that had digital out years ago), the soundtrack CD, and the Kino. I'll wait until I have the project done, or started in earnest, before acquiring extras.

My NTSC Building Empire is going well. When that's finished, I'll start on this one.

Ok, my first impulse is to replicate the Moroder version exactly. Once I get that done, I'll consider doing a longer version with more of the restored scenes. I've acquired some early Moroder CDs with electronic music that seems quite suitable for filler. I'd prefer to keep it totally Moroder music. The soundtrack album also has longer cuts of the songs, which will help for scene extensions. I'll have to check out some of his other soundtrack albums to see if there's anything suitable. I don't think the full 2 hour cut with Moroder music would work, though.

Except that Leonard Rosenman did LOTR (1978) music, not Moroder.

Might work. Been a while since I heard it. I've got Einzelganger (1975) and E=MC2 (1979). Both are full of music that sounds just like what's in Metropolis.

I was researching the film speed question in the other thread and came across info that the Kino NTSC is actually a conversion of the PAL version rather than directly from the digital restoration "print". So, I've ordered a PAL version off Ebay from the UK. I'm going to convert to NTSC, but this way I can work with 25->24 rather than 29.97 and the artifacts of the original conversion or IVTC.

I've heard the official german dvd release that kino licensed their dvd from the producers of is the best and it is pal.

Just wanted to drop a note about how excited I am for this project. Godspeed!

I'd offer some of my collection for materials, but you've already amassed far more than I have. (Actually, the only thing I have that you don't seems to be the vinyl of the soundtrack... Great for some scans but nothing else.)

If you need help in any way, please post. If I can't help, I might know someone that can. I'm sure that goes for everyone else following this thread.

Yay! My PAL Metropolis has arrived. Looks like I'll start working on it next week.

I have the Madacy "Excelsior Collectors Edition" of Metropolis from 1999. From some brief research online, it seems to be crap.

But I'd be happy to contribute if this version ends up being useful.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Thanks, but I have that one already. I've been obsessed by this movie a long time. And yes, that is the crappiest version out there, surpassing even VHS in stinkiness. Check it out.

It's worth having in that it is a copy of the bastardized American edition. One can really get a sense of how terribly it was butchered and how great the restoration is.

I just discovered ProCoder has a specific setting for conversion to a format accepted by Premiere. It also allows conversion with or without the PAL speedup. That is, it usually will transfer PAL to NTSC with no change in runtime. I just found out that it can be bypassed. I don't need the sound, so I can work without worrying about the pitch or synch, except with Moroder, which will be much more forgiving. The setting goes straight to 29.97, though. I can't seem to bypass that. I'll mess around some more with it.
