Getting the word out.

Now that the discs are on the shelf, has any one attempted to inform the masses? I know some reviews mention new changes, but some don't. I was at Best Buy today, where I asked a guy if he knew. He said he did, already had bootlegs, and was only getting it for the extras. He seemed as disgusted by Lucas' marketing as we are, but knew not of our site. Being the kind of guy I am, I at times feel obligated to inform people of things in such stores. The amount of ignorence must be curbed. Reading the SF Chronical, they said "Whatever. Close your eyes for three seconds..." in response to Greedo. Calling us a "rebel faction that views the discs as blasphemy". I say, if we are to be outcasts, then let's let it be known.

I'm going to look into printing out quick, inconspiculous flyers. If I'm at Best Buy, Suncoast, etc., I'll hand them to anyone interested in the DVDs to save my breath. A single fan giving another fan a piece of paper shouldn't be too scandalous. I'd suggest leaving out any liebel. You don't have to kiss Lucas' ass, but avoid tearing him a new one. We want to appear genuine, sincere, and, above all else, civil. We want to look like the concerned fans we are, and not the old, change-hating, Lucas despising madmen we're made out to be. One such flyer should list the new changes, the pressing errors, perhaps even some quotes, and screenshots.

The point of this would be merely to allow the fans to make an educated choice. If i can get one person to reconsider buying these and instead get Battlefront, I'd say it would be worthwhile. If anything, point out verbally that these are not the classic trilogy as they've been touted as. We must inform, not beat a dead horse(if they don't care leave them be), but at least get the word out.

Do you want to inform them that the films have been altered yet again or that the music has been messed up and Lucasfilm is lying about it?

Oh screw it! Tell them everything!

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

Exactly, mention Hayden, mention the music(present Lucasfilm's stance on it too). The point I want to make is inform without taking sides. We're concerned, not bitter. ^_^ It will carry over better.

Funny you should mention it, as I am the editor of my high school newspaper, and I took the liberty of writing an article on the new DVDs. Ironic since I'm not buying them. Actually, it is kinda weird when you stop and think that we know more about the set than most people who are buying it. But I took advantage of my situation and spread the word about the not-so-original original trilogy; not to mention writing about Star Wars is obviously a piece of cake for me. Fyi, the paper goes out next week.

I have talked to just about everyone i know about the DVD's. Most of them know about my dying love for the movies and come to me excited about the new dvds. After that i generally tell them about some of the changes, usually the change in anikin at the end, how lame the whole idea of jabba is, how G lucash hurt hans character by having greedo miss from less than 2 feet away, and then finally mentioning red rocks(gotta mention that last for dramatic effect.). i get mixed reviews, half the people are taken aback by the fact that Lucash will not release the OT untouch, 1/4 react in an angery manner because they thought it was OT being released, and the remander are still gonna buy it....

I'm spreading the word as much as I can, and a lot of people seem to agree with me. My brother had a great suggestion though, which was letting people who have bought the set know that there are defects BESIDES the changes made, which would result in a mass return of "defective" discs. I doubt if many people other than hardcore fans know about Lucas' statements as to the status of the OT, or that there have been further changes made. If we get the word out, there could be mass consumer revolt.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I was talking to my brother yesterda about the 2004 DVDs, he is NOT a Star Wars fan by the way, and this is part of the conversation (this is 100% real):

"And you know what they did? They replaced Sebastian Shawn with Hayden Christensen!"
"Who?"
"Well, uh... do you remember the ending of Return od the Jedi?"
"Yes."
"What was in the ending? Do you remember?"
"Yes, uh... ewoks dancing."
"OK, besides that, do you remember the three ghosts..."
"Uh... I guess..."
"Looking at Luke and smiling, there were three ghosts... Who were them?"
"Uh... Luke's father... and uh... that thing..."
"Yes, Luke's father, Obi-Wan and Yoda."
"Whatever."
"So... they replaced the actor who did Luke's father with the actor who plays Anakin in the prequels!"
"(long pause) Uh... ok, so what? By the way, why would ANYONE buy this DVD set, they obviously have seen the movie before! Why would anyone buy a movie they have seen so many times?!"

After a while...

"They also have re-done the Jabba the Hutt scene, and..."
"Nah, I remember that, they already did it for the... uh... 1998... aniversary edition thing..."
"1997."
"Yeah yeah whatever. They did it back them, it's not new."
"Uh, no, they RE-done it."
"(pause)... No, no, they did it back then."

And that's how 99% of the people out there think about it.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

My family looks at me like I have an abnormal number of facial features whenever I talk about this stuff. Ive been telling all the people I talk to about it. A lot of my friends and co-workers share the purist perspective.

Oddly a ton of people I meet, like at my school, dont care. They like the PT better somehow?!!?!, and they think that the new versions sound a lot better than the "outdated" ones.
Then again, I seem like an oddball, a lot of people my age havent even seen the OT, just the '97 versions. THAT, makes me want to cry.
