George's Armchair Pyschologists Thread (was: The NEW and IMPROVED George bashing thread!!!)

Quick, before it gets locked, say something nasty here.  That way we can actually talk about something other than how awful everything George has ever done is in the other threads.

If you are:

An armchair psychologist, aware of every motive for George's movie choices

A diehard fan of only the OOOOOOOOT

A griper

An anti-profit lefty

A should-be, would-be, could-be, or has-been professional movie critic

A clever typist who enjoys calling George Luca$ or Lucass or Mr. Hair or The Man with the Beard or Flannel Guy

An unfortunate victim of George raping your childhood, tormenting your memory, or destroying your youthful dreams one release at a time

A person who wants to criticize George's personal life with statements like, "No wonder Marcia left you," or, "Geez, all that lounging around Skywalker Ranch has put several pounds on your neck."

A person who forgot that George made one or two or three good movies that you once fell in love with

Then you're in luck!  This is the thread for you.

Look, I get it.  This is originaltrilogy.com.  The prequels aren't exactly Saving Private Ryan, The Godfather, and Schindler's List.  The SE changes are out of place and detract from the original charm in many cases.  George should indeed please his real fans by releasing the OUT.  But this General Star Wars Discussion forum seems to have no end to the crap people say about him.  I love how matter-of-factly I've read "Oh, the reason such-and-such sucks is because of Fat George."  "This will definitely suck because George is involved."  "George only cares about money, so Marcia left, 9/11 happened, the economy tanked, and the termite population is up."  I mean, it's pretty ridiculous.  Everyone here thinks they are psychoanalysts who know everything about this man.  I've heard all the legitimate complaints, and now it seems people either feel it's necessary to repeat them to their dying breaths or develop new criticisms that are without merit or necessity.  That's my rant, and I'm sticking to it.

George Lucas turned me into a newt.

I got better...mostly.

"From my point of view, George Lucas is evil!"

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I liked the old George Lucas, but not the clone they replaced him with.

Someone's clearly a Spielberg fanboy.  I mean Schindler's List was pretty good, but it certainly doesn't measure up to the Godfather.  And Saving Private Ryan?  Aside from the Normany landing... *spits*

Thread successfully derailed, you're welcome.

Yes, I like Spielberg, but I chose those films based on a general consensus and not my own personal opinion.  I don't watch R-rated films, which all three of these happen to be (though I've seen Ryan edited).

Actually, I don't mind a derailment.  I clearly had another purpose to starting this thread than to actually bash George.

This is a better idea of the consensus, although the consensus can clearly still be wrong:

I'll admit I was shocked to see Schindler's List in the top ten.  I wasn't surprised Private Ryan failed to make the list at all.  Godfather is placed just about right.

#15 shows we didn't drift offtopic at all...

Edited? I thought Spielberg had the clout to insist that SPR air uncut or not at all...

Where were you in '77?

It wasn't on TV.  It was one of those movie editing companies that keeps getting shut down for trying to skirt the law. Shhhhhh....

FWIW the rating system was instituted in 1968 so you can see 8 out of the 10 top ten films on the AFI list, uncut.

Not that you'll necessarily like them all.  I can barely sit through Gone With the Wind myself, but they all have a strong appeal to a lot of people and all in all they are mostly very fine films.

And a special plug for #57, which would easily be #1 on my list.

It wasn't one of those DVD players that edit the movie and censor violence/profanity on the fly?

Sure, we can say that's what it was...but in all honesty, I bought it from a company that specialized in selling edited movies.  I've thought about getting one of those, and it might have been more worth the money in the end.  I of course believe in buying the original as well.

Which company?

Now defunct, I'm afraid.  Wow, it didn't take long to get derailed.  Congratulations, CatBus.

Clean Flicks?  Flix Club?  Curious how their system worked.  Did you get the special DVD player or did they just provide modified DVDs?

Mind you, I find some censored versions hilarious. (The tv cut of Repo Man comes to mind.) But the director or studio signs off on those.

Saw a Clearplay(?) DVD player in Target about four years ago. Haven't seen one since.

The company was called Clean Play DVDs (had to look through my old emails to find it, I'd forgotten).  Never a big company, and overcharged at times.  As I said, they're gone now.  They would actually sell edited physical copies of the DVDs, clearly outside what this site supports as legit (though the work done here is technically not legit either).  There is a site that the promo person emailed and recommended to me, now I get constant emails from them, though I have never used them.  I hesitate to offer a name for fear of breaking OT.com rules.  I don't advocate piracy or illegitimate movie distribution, but seeing as I don't want to watch an offensive movie to edit it, I feel content to let someone else fix it for me.

The DVD players seem like a good way to go, especially if you only want to watch a few edited movies.  You have to pay by the month to download the editing parameters, but you have unlimited access to any movies in their database during that time, and I think the first month is free.  You could then adjust the setting for the film you had in mind, if you wanted to watch a PG or PG-13 movie, for instance.

I find studio-approved edits funny as well.  I remember watching Ghostbusters on TV once, and the part where Ray calls that environmentalist guy ****less was particularly funny.  The mayor asks, "Is this true?"  Peter answers, "Yes it's true.  This man has no..."  The edited version was a different take with alternate lines, Ray calling him a weasel instead, the mayor asking if it's true, and Peter answering, "Yes it's true.  He's a weasel of some kind, but we're not sure which."  Cheesy, but it made me laugh.

I'll have to see if those lines are still there next time GB is on tv.

I found the tv cut of Kubrick's The Shining bordering on comedy as Jack says "freak" and "freaking" a lot. Although the fog added to the Room 237 ghost actually makes the scene a little more creepy.

The tv cut of The Exorcist I've seen is unintentionally funny as characters constantly spout "Judas Priest!"

The most confusing tv cut I ever saw was "Predator". Every shot of the Preds face after he takes off the breath mask is gone.

First time I saw Raiders on network tv, they prudishly trimmed the shot of the natives chasing Indy, because you could see their butts. All the skewered corpses and melting Nazis were untouched of course. ;)
