Oh man, I knew where the music were and he didn't.  That's kind of sad...

lol, I thought the same thing. The music in the original trilogy was perhaps the most important feature, after likable characters, which made it so great. Even the prequels are very good if I were to base them on their music alone.

The Hoth battle oen was hard to get, but how could he not get Cloud City?  That's easily one of the most recognizable tunes, IMO, because it stands out.

Honestly, this interview confirmed what I've thought about Lucas for a very long time: he's not "evil", he's just an average guy (with a creative mind). If he only watches his movies once every 5 years or so, there is no way in hell he could possibly catch all these nitpick sorta things that people catch in his films... like goofs, continuity etc. and it fully explains the 2004 alterations IMO. You see, Lucas seems to like "movies" in a very "average joe" kind of way. All the coulor problems and things like the blue tint aren't really important to the story, or the way the film works... its just important to people like us who are endlessly pissed off about these sorts of things. Don't get me wrong, these "things" really tick me off too (oh how eagerly I await ESB revisited), but Lucas is a family man (gotta respect that), and he has more important tings than messed up lightsaber effects to worry about when the films still work 99% well. The story and characters of the original trilogy are always going to be the same, the films haven't really been "ruined" unless you're going nitpick and be caught up with things that shouldnt really matter. I dont exactly enjoy shifty CGI effects invading my childhood memories, but they arent really the biggest deal beacsue they arent actually changing anything about the intent of the film (only individual scenes are effected). Anyways, considering this information, its much easier to apreciate his opinion on releasing original versions or correcting mistakes.... he doesnt have to do anything because nothing is technically wrong! It just sucks for people like us haha.

Tell that to Sebastian Shaw, the first dead actor in the history of movies to be replaced!

Oh thank you!

I've been meaning to look these interviews up for ages ever since the dvd was released. You reminded me and save me the hassle all in one go. Kudos.

Good interview on Seth’s behalf. I don’t think I’ve actually heard his real voice before, initially it made me laugh because I thought he was taking the piss.

I think it’s always been obvious George doesn’t watch the movies that often, which is fine after living them for so many years. But you think he’d consult them before making new ones or changing old ones, unless it was just a passing remark and we are reading too much into it.

When Lucas is talking about having a tivo full of FG and having never bought the dvds and Seth remarks (beautifully I might add) well I bought all the Star Wars dvds, does George then say “Well you can go out and buy them all again”?.

That’s what I heard, and I then burst out in laughter. Not the good laughter. A more sick, desperate laughter. Its purpose to prevent my head from exploding.

watching this interview made me want to puke.   Seriously i thought George Could not go and lose any more respect and then he goes and opens his mouth.  All he watches is Family Guy and Jackass reruns.  Sort of expalins all those fart and poop jokes in the Phantom Menace.

He does not know the movies script as seen in a previous interview, and now he does not even recognize John Williams signature tunes.  He does not even bother watching the movies, i guarantee you he did not watch the originals or re-read the original scripts before writing the prequels.   Proved what i had always feared the prequels were a deliberate cash in and he is not a fan of the movies.

Uh, he has a 14 year old kid. Any father of a 14 year old boy has inevitably seen Family Guy and Jackass. His Tivo is full of the shows because his kids are the only ones that use it.

Honestly, do people not even consider stuff like that or are their brains permanently set to "bash without thinking".

Most filmmakers don't watch their films. They've seen the films more than anyone because in the editing you watch clips of the film for 24 hours straight until the point where you never want to watch it again. And then when you do watch it you continually kick yourself for all the things you could have done better. And then every few years you have to watch it again because of whatever ceremony or festival thats screening it and you have to attend. So theres no reason to sit down at home and watch your own film. Most people hate their own films in that sense, thats why they go on and make other movies.

I like George, he's a good guy, (he just has some bad ideas about what constitutes film preservation). Is anybody else sort of concerned about his health?

He definitely is showing his age. He's pretty good about his privacy so I'm sure whatever health problems he has are on the down low, considering he is a diabetic pushing 70.

Um...he not even 65 yet.

Anyways, this really shows that he doesn't even know the impact of what he is doing to the only franchise he chose to stay in.

I could see him wrecking the one film in the trilogy he actually directed, but he did not direct empire strikes back and return of the jedi.

I cannot believe Kersh let him ruin empire strikes back. As for Marquand he is dead. Does Lucas even have respect for the dead?

He replaced shaw with christensen, why not remove the other directors name and put his on the films.

If i was Kersh i'd disown the special editions of Empire and have allan smithee put in instead.

As for the prequels as far as i'm concerned he can add and deleted things to his liking since they suck anyway, there is nothing he can do to ruin them further.

I'm pretty sure I liked the theatrical cut of Episode I more than the DVD edit. So, they can get worse.

skyjedi - were you a Rancor in a former life?  No normal human being could possibly be that pissed off that often.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

My thoughts exactly. It seems like he has the "venom" meter cranked to eleven whenever he clicks "reply".

No I just loathe the special editions and the prequels, as much as i dislike TFN Gushers who come to originaltrilogy.com who care nothing for the original films made between 1977-1983.

This site is not specialeditions.com or crappyprequels.com

I'm sorry if you disagree with me. But I won't apologize for my opinions.

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are being added to my shit list of directors.

If Spielberg makes another good film sometime in the future i may relent since he did release the original versions of e.t. and close encounters on dvd.

As for Lucas i have always been confused at to his treatment of the original star wars trilogy, unless he somehow changes his mind. Which i seriously doubt. The man is stubborn which is his strength and weakness at the same time.

Again he can tinker the films to his liking as long as he does what every other director worth their salt has done, release decent quality copies of the theatrical cuts in anamorphic.

I'm not asking for a multi million dollar clean up job like lowry or the 1997 release. just what we got in cinemas circa 1977-1983. I don't think that is too much to ask.

"A fanatic is someone who increases his efforts when he's lost sight of his goal"

I have never lost sight of my goal. That is to have the originals restored for a proper dvd release. I signed the petition. I have been a Supporter of George since i was a very young kid. It was only until he treated the movies he created that i loved as a child with a grave disrespect that i turned against him. He became the villain instead of the hero.

My parents went to see his films before i was born so you could say i'm a second generation fan. MY dad is around Lucas age, indeed they shared a lot of the same interests like drag racing cars. MY dad was a huge fan of graffiti.

If i really hated George as much as you guys think why would i have an autographed starlog magazine from the 10th anniversary of star wars signed by him as one of my prized posessions?

That i would own like 13 copies of star wars on every format?

That i would have memorized the Indiana Jones Trilogy and Original Star Wars Trilogy backwards and forwards and watched them hundreds of times over?

I am only enraged at his treatment of the movies, the man himself was a god to me in my youth. I know blasphemy and all that jazz right. I mean he's the guy that got me interested in mythology, in storytelling, filmaking and science fiction and fantasy. The guy that pointed the way to writers like Asimov, Tolkien, Burroughs. and E.E. smith.

MY life is all the more enriched and i owe the man a very great debt i can never repay.

If the 77-83 restoration is what you want you should just leave it at that, without all the extra rage, that doesn't help the "cause", it just make us all look like crackpots. And crackpots are IGNORED in home video.

See, why can't you post with that kind of intelligence and sensibility all the time, or at least more often than not? Most of your posts come off as whiny fanboy crybaby pissing and moaning. Posts like this one above should be the rule, not the exception, especially if you want people to take you seriously.

You don't like the SE's and support a proper release of the OUT?  Fine.  State your position calmly and logically and people will listen to you. The problem isn't the message, it's the delivery.  The way you act most of the time makes people hate you.  Right now, you come off as a "disgruntled postal worker" type where all the mail comes crashing through the front window tied to a brick.
