General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread — Page 454

I’ve mentioned the VP of my dept is a big Star Wars nerd (the guy with the Yoda Christmas lights). One thing that isn’t seasonal is the Yoda figure on the conference table in his office. It’s always there. It’s very detailed and stands about 18" high. The thing seems as detailed as the original puppet. I sit across the hall from him. This is the view from my desk for about 20 minutes every morning.

So I was going through the featuettes for CW season 2 and while talking about the PT-era Y-Wings they show this clip from the original version of ANH; https://youtu.be/xvJ7CH87LWw?list=PLYpCQhK-tG802hqakmcm5XvrctJh0cTQP&t=251

Does anyone know which version this is from? It looks to good to be from the GOUT version. Could this be a despecialized shot? The featurette would ave been made in 2009 or maybe a year or two later depending on when the DVD/Blu-ray was released.

That’s an SE shot. The forward most y-wing doesn’t disappear before it fully exits the frame like it does in the original version.

Oh, well never mind then. For some reason I thought that shot had been replaced with CG Y-Wings. I haven’t seen the SE in ages so I probably mixed it up with some of the CG X-Wing shots I remembered.

I’m almost astonished by how apathetic I’ve become to Star Wars in the past couple months. There’s no hate left, no love. Just big, gray indifference.

That’s everyone after TROS.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

It is? The only thing I personally feel indifferent about now is the ST (and a pretty decent chunk of the new EU). Other than that it’s pretty much “business as usual”.

It’s the vibe I’ve been getting from other corners of the 'net, and though the Disney output is the worst offender right now it is pretty discouraging to have the trilogies on both sides of the OT so completely fail to live up to their promise.

Well, I’d say most people have gotten over the PT (choosing to simply ignore it) and eventually people will get over the ST as well.

Also I personally wouldn’t take the overall “vibe” on the internet too seriously. The people who stand out the most are the ones complaining and ranting, so it doesn’t represent the public opinion too well IMO. Plus, it depends on where you look. The “vibe” I’ve been getting generally varies from casual enjoyment too casual indifference, and the “angriest” simply being frustrated and/or disappointed or just straight up choosing to not see TROS in the first place.

While I was looking for ESB trailers to post on the The OT Trailers/Promos Thread I came across this trailer;

The Empire Strikes Back - Scope Vivaldi Teaser (35mm)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CroqdjDv82s

Its obviously meant to evoke the original ANH teaser from 1976, but that seems more like something someone would do as a fan project. Would the general public even have known about the ANH teaser back in 1980?

Could someone verify if this is a real trailer shown in actual theaters?

Interesting find! Not sure how someone could extract the original narration cleanly from a mono track though.

Maybe George liked the 1976 trailer?

Where were you in '77?

Well, it’s not the same narration, I don’t even think its the same voice, it’s just done in the same style.

Maybe Lucas did like the trailer, after all the whole “somewhere in space this might be all happening now” was probably written before he added “A long time ago…” to the opening of the film, so he could have commissioned a similar trailer to be made but with updated lines.

It just weirds me out because its such a fan trailer thing to do, and I can’t imagine too many would have recognized the gimmick pre-internet. Then again I wasn’t even born in 1980 so I don’t know how familiar fans were with the specifics of trailers, maybe the 1976 trailer was considered a “classic” even then. I suppose Lucas could have just liked the vibe of it and decided to make a similar one for ESB before deciding to go with the other trailers.

I’m sure this wasn’t intentional, but I always felt like the flash that occurs when Han shoots the door on his freighter after Chewie is shot in TFA looks just like the thing that would have masked a jump cut back in the day. Felt retro.

Pretty sure that is a jump cut.

Well, then I like it. Intentional throwback or not.

Was RO shot on film or digital?

Digital.

Ep.7-9 however were shot on film.

Looking at RO now I would never believe it.

Yeah, it’s quite well done, though when the ANH outtakes show up during the battle of Scarif the contrast suddenly becomes much more obvious. Of course that’s 40+ year old film-stock, so maybe that’s an unfair comparison. There are a few moments where some digital “quirks” really stand out for me (f.ex. the red lights in this scene, but I tend to be quite picky about these things. Modern digital is great and only getting better, but I still prefer the organic and grainy film look…
