So I rewatched that “SC 38 Reimagined” lightsaber duel for the first time since it was released, just to see if it was as bad as I remembered. Boy howdy, was it ever. And fans actually like this overwrought crap? And want it edited into the movie proper?

The same fans who think the Vader attack in Rogue One is the best scene in the franchise.

Those people are the worst.

Admittedly, I loved that scene at first. Then I eventually realized if Vader has the kind of Sith to go headlong in hacking people to bits, he would’ve done so in SW '77.

Stylish but stupid fanservice, is Stylish but stupid.

If I have any trick-or-treaters dressed as Kylo Ren, I may have to express disappointment by telling them “you’re just a child… in a mask.”

PM me for links to my edits; apparently, some feel shy about this.

Those beat the crap out of the crappy SW costumes they foisted on kids back in 1977! Mom got me a Threepio costume but I wasn’t going to be caught dead in the suit that came with the mask. (FYI I was not Chewie obsessed yet.)

I ended up taking some yellow sweats and drawing all of Threepio’s details on with a magic marker. (The sweats nicely solved the usual dreaded problem of parental units making you wear a warm coat over your costume.) I partnered with a neighborhood kid who made an Artoo out of cardboard boxes with a flashing light in the head. Some people questioned whether anyone was actually in Artoo, implying I was trying to hustle more candy out of them. 😉

Wish I could find a photo of my costume after all these years. There ought to be one somewhere.

I’d love to see that 3PO (and R2) costume if you find a photo. Our kids’ masks and weaponry were store bought, but the costumes are homemade from the neck down and I had to add several details to the Stormtrooper mask because it had very few of the details painted. My Boba Fett costume came from amazon, the jet pack is inflatable!

I had no idea. Excellent work!

For some historical context, I should add there was a point before the mid 70’s when you could find really cool costumes in stores similar to what you made. I had one sweet Batman outfit just a few years before. I think it came from Sears. Then suddenly kid’s costumes being potentially flammable became a big news item (and being easily seen at night when crossing the street) and the end result was the bland unimaginative thing like you see above. At least that’s how I remember things going down. Much like the lurid stories of demented fiends tampering with Halloween candy, there was probably a lot of hysteria about such things at the time.

My Mom made me some costumes over the years. For 1978, I went as a knockoff Vader with a helmet like this one, because no way in heck was I ever getting one of those 75 buck Don Post Vader helmets.

I peeled off the tacky decals though.

My Mom made a suit to go with it based on this Vader clone I had.

I also had a cheap knockoff glow in the dark sword to go with it.

I find that answer vague and unconvincing. Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Since Pablo Hidalgo has confirmed that Captain Rex from the Clone Wars and Rebels was on Endor with General Solo’s strike team I wonder if he ever spoke to Luke about being commander of the clone army under Anakin.

I was watching ROTJ last night and the scene where Luke and Leia have their whole sibling talk and thought it would be so cool to see Luke walk off and Captain Rex stop him even for a brief moment to acknowledge that he was Anakin’s commander and that having once fought with the great General Skywalker he now is proud to fight alongside the Son of the great General.

Extremely random thought, I wonder if the “A long time ago…” title card in the theatrical release of A New Hope actually looked the way it is, faded and old-looking.

Gotta say one of the most baffling things in Star Wars history is how long they held onto Revenge of the Jedi. Like, they held focus groups to test whether Revenge or Return was better. Crazy to me that Lucas didn’t really have much of an issue with using Revenge.

And George mentioned the title during production on ESB in one of the interviews for the original making of book! At what point did somebody attempt to tell him or did he come to a realization on his own?

I do wonder if there was ever a crawl shot with Revenge.

I’m reading making of ROTJ right now and it’s a an ongoing back and forth. He started out with Return but Kazanjian said it was weak. So then he came up with Revenge, and even though it was stated early on that Revenge wasn’t very fitting, Lucas held on to it throughout production anyway.

There are probably some cliffhanger serials with Revenge in the individual chapter titles that influenced Lucas.

It’s either a sign of his apathy toward the third film in the trilogy or a cheap way to make an alternate cut of the film for potential exhibition someday.

Perhaps a thread for another day (maybe once TROS is out), but it’d be interesting to collect all the ideas that were conceptualized for one Star Wars movie, but ended up in another. Things like Bespin in TESB from SW, the Endor battle in ROTJ from SW, Coruscant in TPM from ROTJ, Utapau in ROTS from SW, the lightspeed landing in TFA from ROTJ, Vader’s castle in RO from TESB, etc.

The name “Utapau” in ROTS goes back to the original SW, but the idea of a sinkhole city postdates the 1977 film. Perhaps most notably, it was considered as an idea for Mos Espa in TPM.

Where did you learn about the hyperspace-through-shield idea in TFA coming from ROTJ?

I thought the sinkhole planet was from the original film as well, although maybe I’m misremembering (ROTJ perhaps?).

It’s from one of the earlier drafts of the film, per Rinzler’s making of book. I’ll have to check when I get the chance which draft.

I didn’t know the hyperspace thing was from ROTJ, the first I heard of it was from the TPM rough draft:

Yeah, the first I heard of it was when I read Secret History and it mentioned the TPM draft where Anakin did it. The ROTJ one is much more reminiscent of what showed up in TFA however, insofar as it’s Han in both (not using the Force), with a similar set up (sneaking through the shield around a planet as part of the plan to blow up the Death Star type thing).

I’ve seen one book (maybe it was Kevin J Anderson’s Illustrated SW Universe) claim the sketches of a “crevasse city” were done for ROTJ, but I think that’s inaccurate; several of the drawings appear in the various Episode I art books.

Thanks for the info about the hyperspace thing!

It was off the top of my head. I actually had thumbed through that exact book recently so maybe that’s what put it in my head (although, if it was that book it couldn’t have been TPM, right? That book’s a collection of McQuarrie illustrations and was published in 95). Will have to look into some more. Either way, it was definitely an idea that predated ROTS.

Yeah it was a fun find. One of these days I really need to read those early drafts myself. All I have to go off of otherwise are the details Rinzler found interesting enough to mention.
