true, he didn't force anyone to do those things, but he knew it would make him look good.   I'll admit,  I thought it was cool, especially when the Field Museum opened an exhibit and I was able to see Darth Vader and C-3PO costume. 

and to your point that he already had the prestige - yes, but more than he deserved and he milked it.  Before the PT, he spent a lot of time talking about myths, kurosawa etc.  During the PT, he pushed very hard the angle that 'well, star wars was always lame.  they're just dumb kid movies'

for the oscar - i didn't say he staged all that; again, just he knew it would make him look good.  and maybe theres are part of me that felt robert deniro should have been there instead and my annoyance showed thru more than I intended.

I dont like saying this about someone.  Im not happy to call someone dishonest and deceitful and opportunistic.  but thats what he is.  There is plenty of evidence of this behavior -the biggest examples are him blathering on and on about how "star wars was actually a large multi-generational saga that I had planned all along."  another is "special effects are just tools for telling a story".  "Im really an art-house/experimental filmmaker". He didn't misspeak when he said these things.  He did it for a good reason. 

 So I ask the question: other than hiding in a cave, WHAT could Lucas do that could not be interpreted as being a prestige-whore

People at the Oscars look good. When someone makes a musceum display about you you look good. Should Lucas not do these things? Wouldn't you call him bad names if he turned the Smithsonian down?

Yeah, as far as I can tell Lucas and Scorsese are mainly like friends-of-friends. They didn't go to school together or anything since they were at opposite ends of the country, but they both got famous and started making films at the same time, they crossed paths with some frequency, and they had a lot of mutual friends, namely Coppola and Brian DePalma, so they would always be at the same parties and ceremonies. And, of course, Marcia was Scorsese's editor for most of the 70s, which probably cemented any kind of bond more than anything, even if it brought some level of unspoken tension.

But it's more a professional relationship than a personal friendship. Most people Lucas is linked to are like this, Coppola being the one exception. Even with Spielberg, they were never super close, they just work together. It's not like Spielberg ever visits the Ranch just for a beer with Lucas so they can shoot the shit, it's always for a rough-cut-screening or a script meeting or something. I think rather it's just a case of having a circle of trusted colleagues and when you start getting older you start appreciating these people who have been with you in life through all the years and ups and downs, so even though Lucas and Scorsese were never friends and had totally different lifestyles, there is a certain bond there if anything through sheer time. But yeah, I wouldn't say they are particularly close, they just run in the same social circle and have been around each other a long time.

Bloody hell, I just had a look on Theforce.net boards...It's worse than I could have imagined...

Whatever people in the SW 'community' may think about the people on here or Save Star Wars or fan editors or whatever, at least they're passionate about something.

Most of the members seem to either a) defend Lucas to the nth degree, regardless of what arguments anyone puts forward or, b) don't give a shit what 'version' is on their DVD shelf at home as long as it has 'Star Wars' printed on the cover.

OK, I admit point a) could be construed as 'passion' but more often than not seems to stem from some sort of blinkered, deluded 'allegiance' to Lucas rather than a personal opinion.

While I'm not surprised in the slightest that the BD set has sold in such vast quantities, I would have hoped more people would have made some sort of stand in favour of waiting for a decent HD version of the OOT.

It's a shame, but there it is...

Northern Ireland's Star Wars costuming club will again be appearing in W5 (in the Odyssey Arena Belfast) for a couple of days in Oct for the fourth year

It doesn't cost that much to get a flight to Belfast City Airport from Mainland UK & W5 is 10 minutes from airport

On a similarly jubilant  note, my 8 year-old son is off to Wexford (SE Irish county) for the weekend equipped with 'the Han Solo films'...Love it...
