Have you seen any of Joel Schumacher's non-Batman films? That's not a personal attack, just a simple question.

WB were the ones who shifted gears over to The New Batman Adventures

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of New Batman. But then again, I wasn't a fan of Batman Beyond either (runs for cover).

Yeah, actually. I saw "A Time To Kill" in psychology class. THought it was pretty good.

He just wasn't meant to direct Batman, plain and simple.

Wasn't Warner Brothers also partly to blame for the fiasco though? With the insistence of a lighter Batman?

I've read that after "Forever" Schumacher tried to pitch WB on an adaptation of "Year One" that he wanted to make in the more serious vein. Lord knows how that would have turned out.

Warner Brothers wanted it to be lighter, sure, but lighter doesn't have to mean a Batsuit with nipples, ridiculous action scenes, and corny dialogue throughout.

Sure, whoever wrote the script is partly responsible for the bad dilaogue, but the director should catch things like that. The director not liking the original dialogue is what got us the "I love you..." "I know." scene in Empire Strikes Back...

Actually, this was after B&R. I remember it well. It was about as deluded as Halle Berry's comments about expecting to do a Catwoman sequel weeks after the first one had already tanked.

Well, the Burton movies screwed continuity over royally, what with making the Joker the Wayne-murderer and all. Making Dent run for mayor is pretty much par for the course with Burton.

Changing the story from the comic books doesn't need to mess up the movie. In some ways, it makes it better. Batman Returns version of the Penguin was much better than if they had tried to do a comic version of the Penguin. The thing about contiunity is that most of the movie going public doesn't really know much about it or care. The extent of their knowledge of Batman comes from things like the 60's tv show. They know Batman is Bruce Wayne, who Comissioner Gordon is, and the major villians, and that is about it. I remember that when the 1st Batman came out, I had a friend that wondered why they didn't include Police Chief O'Hara or have the poles to the batcave where Bruce Wayne can put on the batsuit mid-drop, all elements of the tv show, that as far as I know, weren't in the comics.

My God...I saw about 10 minutes of Catwoman on HBO a few days ago and...My God...

So... is it official that Ryan Phillipe (or however he spells his name) is playing the Joker?

Phillipe is in the running to play Harvey Dent. Big mistake if that happens. I'm still pulling for Liev Schrieber. Need somebody with age and gravitas to play a D.A. Phillipe is the right age for a fledgling Asst. D.A. like Katie Holmes was, but not the big kahuna.

Just like the guy who played the Scarecrow in BB was way to young to believably play the head shrink at Arkham. They need to cast someone in their 40s as Dent.

I hadn't thought about Murphy's youthfulness. I was distracted more by the fact that whenever Murphy was on screen all I could think of was 28 Days Later.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to call you out on that one. Williams's Dent was indeed the D.A. He was not running for mayor at all. In fact, the mayor announced at the beginning of the movie that he had just hired Dent to help stop the increase in crime in Gotham City.

How cool would it have been if the series had continued to be decent (i.e Schumacher was never hired and Burton curtailed some of his more fanciful ideas) and Billy Dee Williams had played Two-Face in a later movie? Well I think it would have been cool anyway.

You know, I'd be much more prone to get that Batman DVD box set if B:Forever and B&R weren't part of the package.

I hear ya. All I have is the original releases of Batman and Batman Returns (in the shoddy cardboard Warner Bros cases). If I was in a 'more favorable' financial postion I would like to get those movies in a decent presentation with some extras etc.

And I still stand by my belief that the Burton films should not be lumped in with the Schumacher films, even though they are supposedly part of the same continuity (although apart from Alfer and Commisoner Gordon you would never, ever know it).

I've often wondered myself what kind of Two-Face Billy Dee Williams would have made. I have a hard time picturing it, but it definitely would have been worth seeing.

Harv' ol' buddy, don't let me down...

LOL.

Yeah, it would've been good. And I stand corrected about Dent - I was just going off memory, and all I remember was this massive poster at the back of Gotham City Hall for the press conference with a picture of smiley Billy Dee and the name 'DENT' underneath it. I must've seen the poster in my mind's eye and thought, 'DENT FOR MAYOR'.

I thought Murphy was a very good choice for Scarecrow, and I think his portrayal of the character was far more believeable and chilling than the Scarecrow usually found in the comics.

I also think Phillippe could do a great Harvey Dent and Two-Face. I think he could do an especially good Two-Face...Cruel Intentions is proof enough of his penchant for duplicity.

Not that I'm a shill for the company or anything, but much of my DVD buying over the years has been from the Columbia House DVD club. Hell, I started buying with Columbia in the freakin' 8-Track Club!!! Over the years I've been in the 8-Track, Cassette, Album, CD, Laserdisc (yes, they had one) and now DVD clubs- I'm one of these folks who enrolls (sometimes multiple times at once), completes the agreements and then re-enrolls when they ask you to come back with some good deals.

Why I mention this is that I recently re-enrolled yet again and noticed that all four of the Batman special edition DVDs were available for enrollment selections for only .49 cents each with free shipping. http://www.columbiahouse.com/sa/ch/homepage.jsp. Just run a search for 'Batman' and browse through the pages.

As not to hijack this thread talking about Columbia, please PM me if you have any questions or need any details. Heck, if you send me your email address I can 'recommend' you to Columbia as a 'friend' and I can score extra DVDs as well... but that's not why I mention it- merely to state you can get all the Bat-flicks for a decent price.
