WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GEEKIEST THINGS YOU'VE DONE PUBLICALLY?
(costumes, buying weird stuff, whatever...)

I'll get the ball rolling- I wasn't in costume (unless you consider a tux a costume) but two years ago when I got married the groom's side of the wedding party walked in to the theme music from the original 'Battlestar Galactica'. When the ceremony was complete, I kissed my bride and we walked out to the 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' theme! And the funny thing only a few people really picked up on it.

Ha ha!

Some people think I'm "geeky" when I announce the number of days until Star Wars opens every day at work.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side

I brought a vintage lightsaber (just the handle, not the blade) and the Star Wars Quiz Wiz to the 12:01AM TPM showing I attended.

Its not 'public' yet, but I've been constructing a custom lightsaber for the 12:01AM RotS I'll be at in about 15 days, 9 hours and 15 minutes.

My wife thinks I'm a geek for all the SW LD/movie material I've bought, or whenever I receive a package from someone else.

Of course, I just keep reminding her that she married a geek.

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

Okay, I don't feel so bad for being one who does that as well. And my wife is constantly reminding me what a geek I am.

One time, I displayed a lifesize Boba Fett helmet on my desk at work. I even wore it for a little while. Wasn't too lambasted though, as it was Halloween.

The geekiest thing I've done in my life was, while in college, staying all saturday morning, afternoon and partially night at a computer lab programming a compiler (actually an interpreter) from scratch. Than was very geeky. But it wasn't really in public, so, let's see...

Arguing with a multiplex manager about SW release date problems in public was very geeky, now that I think about it...
Playing RPG at a mall food court with people looking at us screaming and laughing like maniacs... That was embarassingly geeky.
Going on a insane shopping spree at an anime convention last year...
Going to several anime conventions, RPG conventions, B-movies conventions...
Oh, and going to a 007 fans convention, that was pretty messed up, I don't know why I did this... And I was, like, 12 or 13.
Quoting unknown, obscure anime quotes at business meetings and stuff.
Quoting Star Wars in several ocasions, ocasions which I should NOT be doing that.

Why would a towel be geeky?

Also, to those who have seen the film: Is it any good?

It's hilarious, and it does a very good job of capturing the spirit of the book.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Would I be better off reading the book before seeing it (I guess it's too late for that now)

When I was in high school I lent the most popular, hottest girl one of my textbooks in an attempt to win her over, but I forgot that I had been using the very same textbook to try and flatten out a crease in the cover of my Transformers the movie video, and she publically and loudly quizzed me about it in school the next day. However, that was unintentional so I don't know if it counts.

How distant it is from the book? I loved the book and I think I'll hate the film.

Dude - I was way impressed with this film - put it this way I had LESS hope for this film (I read the "trilogy" once sometimes twice a year) then I did for Episode I but Episode I failed in my eyes (the biggest let down of the 90's PERIOD) that I walked out of the theater and wondered what the heck happened to the last two hours of my life...

BUT, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was better then I ever dreamed possible.

Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay and was VERY involved in the project - JUST think "Infinite Improbability" and everything will be alright.

Actually, Adams only wrote part of the script. He died part of the way through the process and they brought in someone else to finish it.

I didn't want to go to the movies until Episode 3 for some geeky reasons of my own, but hey, I'll give hitchikers a try. What makes me mad is that most people don't even know there's the book... Like when LOTR was released, and I heard people say "Oh but they released the novelization of the movies"... *sigh*

I can forgive people for not knowing about the Hitchhikers book, but to not realize that Lord of the Rings was a book...

I even heard some people saying hoe distasteful it was to call it the two towers after what happened in new york, not realising the title came from a 50 year old plus book.

The other person brought in was Karey Kirkpatrick, who was previously responsible for Chicken Run, and who I thought handled the rest of the script very well.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Hm. I thought Chicken Run was pretty "meh" and that was coming from an at-the-time 12-year-old. Still, I think we're going to see it this weekend.

Chicken Run kicked ass!

"I even wore it for a little while. Wasn't too lambasted though, as it was Halloween."

You sooooo saved yourself, in my eyes, with those last four words.

"even heard some people saying hoe distasteful it was to call it the two towers after what happened in new york, not realising the title came from a 50 year old plus book."

There was a website for internet petitions (can't recall the name), and a petition was started to force Peter Jackson to rename "The Two Towers" under the assumption that he was taking advantage of the recent tragedy. Despite the fact that the owners of the board posted a disclaimer at the top explaining that the title had been created decades before 9/11, people continued to add their names to the list.

What was it Agent K says in MIB? "One person is smart; people are dumb, panicky and..." I forget the rest of the quote, but it's true.

The second part is always true. The first part is true very rarely in my experience.
