I haven't returned to this project since I'm currently occupied with school/work. I'm still waiting for Studio Toledo to send me that MKV file.

At present, I stuck the entire first movie at the Asian DVD Club tracker. Members there can download the entire DVD file if they like to get just the film with English subs from my Korean R3 DVD. I've been quite busy on my own as well, just happened to came here to see what was happening so far.

Actually, now I remember - there is news on my end. I bought the R3 and then made a region-free copy of it.

A weird irony:

I believe when this first came out in Korea, the company that officially licensed the show illegally placed the English dub on the disk.

A couple legit companies over there have done that, placing materials they DIDN'T license onto their disks. Again, very weird.

It's pretty interesting when you think of it. I can only see the Korean companies doing so with the intent those outside their country might buy them (especially Americans) if that is the length they go to obtain English-language subtitles for their product.

How could I apply the audio file to my DVD? Any ideas?

I'm not sure personally, I know there's probably some authoring program that does something like that, but I'm not to up on that sort of thing to know of which ones would do so unless someone else here knows.

By the way, here's an MP3 of the audio I had from my mkv....

Oh guys, something strange I just noticed with my custom GE999 DVD. I havea bad layer break (least I think that's what it is) when Clair tries to convince the conductor to not stop at Trader's Fork. It pauses; on my old DVD player, all I have to do is fast forward for a second and it's fine. But, when I've had that problem with other DVDs in other players, it totally freezes. Was it a burn error or is this usual for Memorex?

Thanks for the soundfile, Studio Toldeo! I synched it up with the Korean DVD video and it worked perfectly.

It might be a burn error if your original disc was not like that. I myself don't like Memorex. Maybe you should try another brand, like Fuji or Sony. Verbatim's supposed to be among the best, but isn't as cheap as Fuji.

Thanks, if I get around to ripping the audio from my copy of "Adieu Galaxy Express 999", I'll send it up here too for anyone interested in it.

In case anyone's interested, someone upped a VHS copy on youtube in English.  Thought I'd pass that along, for those less tech-savy.

BKev, someone on Another Dvd Cite already did movies 1&2 in DL from the R3 dvds.  hehe

I have a dvd with the Roger Corman version (in ep quality) and Warriors of the Wind (also in ep quality) that I might upload to the same site.

Galaxy Express 999 is officially available in japan on dvd currently and the films are being released later this year in japan on blu ray if you don't mind spending 90 dollars a film, lol.

Now i would gladly pay that for the space battleship yamato films on blu ray.

The only HD nega telecine i am aware of was done for season 1 of space battleship yamato and released on dvd only in japan.  Which kind of defeats the whole purpose.  Other than being color corrected to match the original cels and being cleaner video its still limited to dvd resolution.  Except one transfer came from a 16mm dupe negative produced for television and the other came straight from the first generation or gen zero 35mm negative which was photographed directly off the animation cels.

There have of course been other HD transfers put out on dvd, the Dirty Pair movies, Lupin III,which just used that same master for blu ray, the original neon genesis evangelion features in anamorphic DVD only what a bummer.  They put out the cgi on blu ray but gainax won't pay for what is perceived as an obselete version on blu ray, which i think is superior looking because it uses hand drawn animation and was photographed on 35mm motion picture film.

Very few anime features were crafted for a 70mm six track presentation in mind, though AKIRA was.

The original japanese audio  six track master was the basis for the HD master audio on the blu ray.

Would have been a perfect release if they had told the retard doing the telecine to keep his hands off the dvnr controls, lol.

While Galaxy Express IS easily available via either Korea or Japan, the VIZ dub is lost to the VCR bargain bin.

I would LOVE if someone picked up the series at one point, even if only for a sub only release.

I heard, read the dub was horrible and the film had cuts made to it.  Which is why they released an uncut subbed version right?  or am i wrong.

A lot of old english dubs are lost to a vhs bargain bin which is why only fan presevations can save them, unless they get released somewhere worldwide like akira streamline dub being on the madman dvd release in Australia or something and in low quality 2.0 dolby 286k with pal speed up.  When the criterion CAV laserdisc release is uncompressed PCM on the dub.

Matsumoto Fans get almost nothing in the us.  It was better in the vhs laserdisc days to get some of his series and films, in the dvd era they are harder to find in region 1.

Harlock is available officially as a streaming online release with engrish subs.  Can be wathed on crunchyroll or funimation sites.  The same for galaxy express i think, have not watched it yet so cannot vouch for the quality of the subs.  LIVE-EVIL's Harlock had the remastered video, and audio and original audio, fan commentaries and real english subs.  But they were only doing it to try and get someone to get off their duff and license it here which finally happened if in youtube quality, with engrish subs.

The galaxy express movies however i am not sure who owns the rights to them.  Often a tv series is under another licensee than the movies.  Does BANDAI own the rights like they do for space battleship yamato?

You know the reason you cannot import the tv series one season at a time unless you wish to spend 400 hundred dollars a piece.

Which is not unheard of in japan But usually you get at least 2 episodes for dvd.  Now the first Episode of Haruhi Season 2 is going to be on dvd as a single episode and wil be 50 dollars, lol.

Usually if a company is going to include an older dub they need to have a master to work with and clean up for dvd, they are not going to dub the audio off a vhs tape unless it is the only existing copy left.

They need the dialogue reels or tapes recorded for a series.  Voyager Entertainment could not locate the original dialog reels for starblazers for instance, and they also claimed they needed access to the sound effects and music tracks to do a remaster.  They best they could do was take the broadcast master and dub it to dvd.

In the case of robotech they were able to create a new 5.1 mix because the japanese gave them access to their sound library, and they located the original recording reels for the english dub.

I am something of a purist i like the old stereo or monoaural dubs for a series to be either left alone warts and all or be cleaned up from the best possible source.  Transformers season 1 recently got a re-release with the old mono dub remixed into stereo.  But i would have preferred 2 channel or 1 channel mono, whatever at least it was the real audio and sound effects unlike the rhino 5.1 mix.

As for the robotech protoculture box they left off the old mix that was on the old dvd release in 2.0 though was a mono mix.

GE 999 is a streaming thing too.  Just not the movies.  Never been a fan of DOING that, but at least it's available.

Sky, the VIZ dub is uncut (complete with swearing).  Then there's the Roger Corman dub which is just.... no... typical eighties dub.  However, they did keep the original score and even dub a song - one and only redeeming factor.

Do you have a list of anime films dubbed on vhs that are not on dvd or blu ray?

Off the top of my head there is:

Outlanders.

dirty pair movies

galaxy express 999

OLD harmony gold dub for dragonball unofficially available

Then there is the harlock and queen millenia dubs from Cark Macek but the shows were cut up so badly as to be unrecognizable.  It would have worked better if was able to use ssx to pad out the rest of the remaining episodes because as a broadcast requirement they needed a certain amount of episodes for a television package and they had to be dubbed.

Sci FI required a dub for Gurren Lagann and that is the only reason we didn't get a sub only release.

Most dubs are really not labors of love and are really only studio or tv network politics, policies to get a show on tv.  Business that is all it is.

If you count edited-for-TV versions of anime, there are COUNTLESS.  Not sure if those are worth counting, though - they're more curiosities.

I'm still looking for that Harmony Gold dub... there were what, 1-2 episodes and a movie?  That is hard to find.  The collectors who have it aren't exactly gonna release it out, even just the audio.  Templeotrunks has a few audio clips, though.

No conformation yet as to whether or not the japan anniversary blu rays for the galaxy express films will include english subtitles or a dub track.

The upcoming tenchi muyo ovas will include the english dub, as did the movies.

Most of ghost in the shell in blu ray there have english sub track or dub.

Evangelion 1.0 came out in english subtitles on dvd in hong kong not as a bootleg but as an official release, too bad the japan releases are sub free.

Ponyo came out from disney of japan with subtitles instead of waiting for the dub to be included.

With the new space battleship yamato film coming out in december i wonder if i could look forward to a blu ray release of the tv series and films of the older generation cartoon/anime.

The masters for the bolar wars are in fantastic shape and they restored the first season in HD then dumped the transfer to dvd.  Only comet empire season 2 if left with a substandard transfer, and also the films have been out in dvd since 1999, they could benefit from a new transfer.  Only if bandai thinks it is worth the money.  It is remored they are restoring the original mobile suit gundam for blu ray.  knowing them though it will be 90 bucks for dvd/blu ray as usual.

For those interested, Diskotek Media is licensing the first two movies discussed here - complete with English dub, no less!

It may not replace my Korean DVD, but I'm tempted to say the least.
