Grrrrr...

Why couldn't they get the rights to all of them and how did Artisan get rights to just one?

Three little letters: ITC. Blake Edwards retained the rights to the Pink Panther and its characters, but was on very bad terms with both Peter Sellers and United Artists following A Shot in the Dark. UA responded by releasing the awful Inspector Clouseau starring Alan Arkin. Edwards, after smoothing over his differences with Sellers, made a 1-picture deal with Lew Grade (head of ITC), and thus Return of the Pink Panther was born in 1975. Artisan got the rights to Return in a deal for several ITC properties, including On Golden Pond and The Last Unicorn. Why MGM couldn't have bought the rights or licenced them from Artisan is beyond me.

That would be horrible! Just horrible!

Yeah, but when the Hollywood Money Machine gets an idea in their head, it's hard to break them free of it.

One day, I have come with the idea of creating a Pink Panther movie with a CGI Peter Sellers, but then I've come to my normal senses, and slaped myself with a large fish, for having considered such a horrible thought.

As MGM has found out, time and time again; even a slapstick genius like Roberto Benigni can't do it.

Oh well... so much "impossible", "can't do it..." Why don't you knock it off with them, Negative Waves! Why don't dig how beautiful it is out here. Why can't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? <- ID that quote

Or how about another quote from master Bareja? From his TV series, "Alternative-Street 4"

Control room of a central heating unit somewhere in the capital.
- ...so the coal transports had to return to the mine.
- Darn, then how are we supposed to heat the whole city block?
- Well sir, I thought we could shut down the newly built set of blocks...
- But it's already cold there! If we turn off the heating completely, they're gonna freeze!
- Look sir, this is the farthest place we support, the pipes are going for kilometers, they're not insulated yet, so we loose 50% heat...
- 50%? hmmmm...
- ...and the blocks are not finished yet, hole here, crack there - that makes another 50%...
- ...well, well...
- ...and not all flats have tenants already, so we heat empty space - again, 50%...
- Now that does it! We loose, like what? 150% heat! You were right - shut it down at once!
- Right away, chief!
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I think the first quote is from "Kelly's Heroes" said by Oddball (played by Donald Sutherland), one of my favorite movies!

Kelly's Heroes was alright, apart from all its anachronisms.

Never seen that one either. What's it about?

And, Gundark, was your Benigni comment in reference to his remake of Pinnochio?

Actually the Benigni reference was to his turn in Son of the Pink Panther. Kelly's Heroes is a WWII comedy starring Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and Donald Sutherland. It tried to be M*A*S*H for WWII.

Yeah, and it could've been good, if the script hadn't sucked. He played the illegitimate Italian son of Clouseau.

Sounds like Fletch Reflected which featured Fletch's son from one of his many flings as the main character.

Not a movie. It was one of Gregory McDonald's many Fletch novels. The only Fletch movies, thus far, were Fletch and Fletch Lives. Fletch Won will likely be Kevin Smith's next project after Green Hornet.

Kelly's Heroes stars Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, and many other up-n-coming talents. Savalas plays Little Joe, the leader of a squad of G.I.s in France. Eastwood is as suave as ever as Kelly, one of the squad commanders. Eastwood's character hatches a plan to go behind enemy lines and rob a Nazi bank full of gold bars. Little Joe is against the idea, but after everyone else is convinced he goes along. Donald Sutherland plays Oddball, a tank commander who is hired by Kelly to use his 3 tanks, and crews, to breach enemy lines. Oddball is reminiscent of a late 60's hippy, and is the funniest character. On their way to the enemy bank Kelly and his guys get way over their heads when they discover that Oddball hired an entire marching band to reconstruct a downed bridge.

Joke: Oddball: (looking through binoculars at bridge) "Its still up!" *applause* (Allied plane comes by and blows bridge to smithereens) Oddball: "No it aint!"

While Kelly and company are fighting off enemies, the general (played by Carroll O'Connor) listens in to them on a radio from his French suite and thinks they're fighting for the allies LOL. Don Rickles plays Crapgame, a war-time oppurtunist who sells things to G.I.s. He comes along for the ride to get his share of the gold. At the bank the heroes are met with a few German tanks. In a funny scene Oddball, Kelly, and Joe all walk down the street side by side towards the last German tank with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly-like theme playing on the soundtrack. The German tank commander gets out and they compromise and blow up the bank gate with the tank.

Its a hilarious and very fun movie. Its one of those movies you never get tired of watching because its so damn fun and cool......like Big Trouble in Little China.
